Nicely orchestrated "IR-late-90s" style song (or early new millennium style number).

Unfortunately, KJY's age started showing up in this time period and this song is one such example. Though he managed it, one cannot help but yearn for his earlier days

Nice poem by PB as in the case of many songs he did for Fazil's movies. There's some thaththuvam also in this Possibly to reflect the mental difficulties that the hero character suffers in the movie. IMO, Vijay did a neat job in that role (better than what he did in KM). Unfortunately again, it didn't click with the masses.

The song has all the IR elements of sharp orch & excellent melody. One wishes it had an even better reach with the audience. (Comes as a title song in the movie).

Not sure if this song was featured in the movie (could not find video on youtube). Since I haven't watched movie, not sure about one way or other.However, this song was also popular along with others at the time of the album's arrival.

The switching between mridhangam and tablA in the saraNams - well, simply awesome!

However, such superb handling of traditional tALakkaruvikaL is not at all surprising - given the fact that IR is the REAL king of ALL KINDS OF percussion instruments! (It is a different story that lesser talents try to show-off as they are the rhythm & taal kings, much like some fellows who proclaim themselves as pErarasoos simply for self-elevation  )

After all such phony claims and arrogant prideful attitude, they'll come around and arrange to blame IR as maNdaikkanam pidiththavar - when the reality is the total opposite

ஆனந்தக்குயிலின் பாட்டு

A very sweet melody and beautifully rendered by KSC for this super hit album by IR in late 90's for Fazil. The pathos version is very sweet too, with IR changing the rhythm instrument to tablA there (no need to mention that's my fav). Without much grandiose orch, IR creates the needed effect effortlessly here.

The songs have been picturized nicely too (though the very appearance of Radha Ravi always irritates me) - the scenes in general depict a happy joint family.

Like I mentioned before, I'm always reminded of this cassette purchase from R S Puram CBE, close to where a bomb went off a few days later  So, typically i don't listen to this album frequently, unless it happens without choice...

As mentioned in the IR-hit-history thread, I've never heard this song before I watched the movie on DVD a few years back. It's possible the song was part of the LP but never made it to Palakkad or it wasn't even part of the vinyl or cassette as IR was known to add short songs like this on the fly when doing the BGM for the movie in the last minute.

The song comes in a crucial moment in the movie and helps to build a little bit of tension. However, in the end of the song, it is typical of Fazil - who smoothly resolves the tension to move the story, unlike other drama movies where some high-voltage-unnecessary-scene will be shown

The movie is a big favorite with me as well, despite the limitations of the on-screen artists IR rules and so is the nice handling by Fazil!

Also, this is ditto to "rOjAppoonthOttam" song in melody & orch. Practically two sets of lyrics for the same "track". I guess this is a rare case in history, of recording two songs with the same track (absolutely no change in orch - just the words changed). Same singer pair too.

What a lovely lullaby in the voice of Chithra chEchchi! Especially the ending of pallavi and saraNam (that aRivAyO & ArArO)!

One of my big favorites! However, this didn't get the popularity / attention it deserved among general public (i.e. as much like the similar classics that enjoyed the reach among masses)

This song is actually an irritant in an otherwise interesting movie (Sathyaraj & Raghuvaran do some nonsense tricks in front of the child in the mental hospital campus).

However, the song as a standalone number is quite enjoyable - with lovely drum and guitar work. Also, Vaali coined together words in an excellent manner to fit  a tough melody / sandham, while also capturing the situation nicely. I have no complaints with MV & SPB, though they could have done it a little bit more interesting.

Well, IR gave a terrific album to this well-deserved movie, which was remake of 'ente mAmAttukutty ammaikku' of Malayalam which introduced "baby Shalini" to the film world - who later acted as heroine for the Fazil movies whose songs we have covered in this thread (KM & KN) . Well, she is now wife of "தல"

I guess they wanted to have a surAngani-like song (in the mould of Srilankan "poppisai pAdalgaL" but the end result is a disaster.

Horrible first saraNam (I was so irritated to get the words for the lyrics for this thread. I would have never cared for them if not for this exercise - outright ridiculous). Adding to woes is Tippu who I cannot stand. Manjari is OK for this fun number but other than the second saraNam, none of the words are palatable to me and that spoils the song totally - even though the tune and orch are reasonably adequate to make it a catchy number. Vaali the culprit here. Fazil, obviously, had no clue as to what's happening when he made this movie.

Sad to see a master losing control so badly in a project.

Not sure if the MF original had a song for this situation - in any case, the TF remake had more songs than the original but most of them fit nicely and enhanced the movie watching. The melody of this song has a 60's-70's kind of old-world charm (perhaps intentional) but still keeping IR-special-mark indelible, especially in saraNams. Interestingly, the second saraNam has one more on-screen version (and in the disk too, with a changed rhythm arrangement) with all the pAdal varigaL exactly same but the feel modified, by the "musical chemist" IR

So, we got most of the "original" Thamizh songs that IR did for Fazil so far. (Agreed some of those movies were remakes but the songs weren't remakes by any chance. They were all originals).

It's time now to move on to either exclusive Malayalam albums or "multi-lingual" projects (with songs simultaneously made). I'm not going to cover any "dubbed" ones for two reasons -
1. I don't know which are those
2. Some of the songs could have been dubbed even without IR's knowledge (and thus not worth listening to even).

Leaving the "simply-dubbed" ones aside, it should be better to start with a simultaneous TFM-MFM project, with some awesome songs.

In Malayalam, it was 'ente soorya puthirikku' and the Thamizh equivalent was 'kaRpoora mullai'.

I'll get the 'rAppAdi' / 'kaRpoora mullai' pair to begin with...

I wrongly assumed that ente soorya puthrikku & kaRpoora mullai were ditto movies. When I watched the Malayalam version, felt it was just OK, another average Malayalam movie.
I didn't think Amala acted well in that.

Today saw KaRpoora mullai - it is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER! சிறப்பு! And Amala had done a terrific job here! (Perhaps the dubbing artist helped quite nicely)

28 yrs old but not a dull moment, quite enjoyable even today!

Interesting to see Suresh Gopi show up in just one scene in the Thamizh version (briefly in the poonkAviyam song)...

I got married in 1991 and we started our life together in a nice rented house (bungalow dhAn - bungalow dhAn ) at the end of a street, in some 20 cent size compound with a few coconut trees, mango trees and other natural setting - frequented by many snakes of course, typical of Palakkad (including cobra / sArai - the front room where shoes were kept had a bird nest on the gap between wall and ceiling when we arrived. In the first week we had a visitor - a huge sAraippAmbu was in that place trying to get some food ).

Our neighbor had two lovely little girls who immediately made friends with our 5 year old niece who visited us when we started. These two neighbor girls too started calling us "chiththi - chiththappA" and became very close to us. (Now both those girls are married, in different countries, are our FB friends and continue to call us chiththi - chiththappA).

Whenever I hear this rAppAdi song, those two girls and other neighbor kids are the ones I'm reminded of, including the college girls who came to learn accounts from my wife and started calling her "teacher" All those girls were singing loudly this song's pallavi many times one day, repeating the 'hoyyArO' kind of chorus sounds too

While I didn't know at that time that it was an Ilayaraja song (thought it was some new MFM), when I heard its Thamizh version I immediately figured out that this is from that latest Fazil movie. (I never got a chance to watch the movie in theater - saw it only on the net in recent years - because wife didn't care for movies those days and we had a lot other interesting things to do in that beautiful home / settings).

Excellent song - somewhat like 'pAttukkuppAttu' of Anjali but with KSC added it takes a different dimension.

What an all-time-classic that IR made for this interesting movie and situation!

I knew there are 4 versions of this song but before today heard only 3. Both versions in Thamizh but only the group version in Malayalam. For the first time listened to the KJY solo version in Malayalam today and I feel that is superior to the other three This is not to slight PS ammA or KSC chEchchi, they are both awesome. However, KJY brings something extraordinary to the second saraNam in Malayalam that could choke one if he tries to sing. When he repeats the 'thEngum' word, KJY perhaps got emotional and added an extra sangathi, which is heart wrenching! Such extraordinarily powerful things are KJY-only-possible stuff IMHO.

There are any number of superlative things in this song and one can keep writing multiple articles on the song. However, I should mention one most important thing in this post and not add too many words. It is the "arrival of strings with tablA" in the first interlude! GENIUS they cry aloud!

Perhaps IR chose to bring out that effect in that point. The pallavi is quite soft and slow, with no gambheera percussion or accompaniments, just to calm down the listeners and make them unprepared for the assault that is to come, a rAsA technique. And suddenly in the first interlude when tablA and the powerful strings hit you, they hit you real hard. I choke every time and often my eyes become watery at that point! One cannot express in words!  And the #IR_Waltz thingy simply adds to the emotions! I think whenever IR wants people to switch off their left brain, he picks the 1-2-3-1-2-3 stuff.

I know this is the lesser of the 4 songs in this movie. However, a simple superficial listen won't do justice to this song which is packed with a lot of stuff.

First of all, this has different saraNams & one'll notice only with proper attention (slightly different mettu and different proceedings). Plus, this has that exclusive IR-style - with drums / brass / bass combo that was deployed in limited amount those days (somewhat in rock-n-roll style) and was given only for some special situations and movies.

That way, this song too is a special treat for this Fazil / Amala combo bilingual movie.

Though the first line of the Thamizh song is somewhat irritating, rest of the pAdal varigaL beautifully suit the milieu, with even decent poetry thrown in. A number of simile / metaphor stuff deployed.
(Of course that சண்டி ராணி thingy is nonsense - whatever be the situation, this is not fitting for the sophi college girl to call her mom, a classical singer. OTOH, it is not as bad in Malayalam.)
