Initially I assumed that this song is a classical number with lines written by Thiyagaraja swamigal (based on Anbu sir's spreadsheet). I also guessed is as Telugu

Of course, the same version is retained in both Thamizh and Malayalam movies as such

With that song, all the IR songs for Fazil's Thamizh movies are done. (i.e. those that are made in Thamizh itself and not dubbed from other languages).

Now, let us collect the Malayalam songs.

I think there's just one album that IR did for Fazil in MY - 'pappayude swantham appoos' and it had the famous 'olaththumbathu'.

That olaththumabthu was getting played in every nook and corner of KL and it made such an impact that Malayala Manorama made that as the starting remark when they ran a cover story on IR around that time. Let me start covering the album with that immensely popular number.

As mentioned in my post above, this song was a rage in early 90's in Kerala and made waves. As one can see from the emotional youtube comments (especially for the female version), this song evokes strong nostalgia and personal memories even after decades! Such a very popular household number in Kerala - so dear to Malayalees - from the IR-Fazil combo.

Of course, a very personal fav for me as well (both versions).

Malayalees often state KJY as the gold standard for pronunciation of Malayalam words and syllables. (And also Mohanlal. They often say 'ethra sputikam', meaning 'how much crisp and clear').

While it is definitely commendable for KJY and Lalettan, for a non-Keralite like Janaki to achieve almost similar pronunciation / enunciation / diction is something that declares the phenomenal capability of the lady! (Her major competitor in popularity in the south, SPB, could come nowhere near her in this aspect. In the few chances he got to sing MFM, he miserably failed IMHO - sounding like a 'madras-bAshai-fellow' struggling with the language. Though as popular as SJ in the other three south languages, SPB never made it worthwhile in MY.)

When singing the last pallavi, KJY and SJ end in different ways. Actually, KJY ends it pretty much like how he sings each time but SJ chose to hit a different note (perhaps as told by IR or she did that way and IR simply approved it).

Well, we think all these are phenomenal but for her all these were just effortless stuff which makes her talent even greater!

This is about the recording of the song 'poovE poochchooda vA' in KSC's voice and the resultant applause in the studio. IR told people that their applause should go to MSV-TKR because he got the emotion / rAgam from 'malarndhum malarAdha' for poovE poochchooda vA song

Quite an emotional song - supposedly sung by the deceased mother to the son in the movie scene. SJ provides the required emotional voice to an already strong composition by IR. In addition, the orchestration adds to the melancholy and eeriness.

This song had a lot of attention in recent months after a little girl sang this with a lot of "feel" on a reality show and there was almost 15 minutes of adulation after she finished her singing. (I've got the youtube link in the end of this post, after the lyrics). One can see a lot of people comment about the singing of that little girl in the YT of the movie video

A light song in an otherwise "heavy" album (means, not loaded with emotions but some simple juvenile level romance)

One of those very many solos for KSC in Fazil movies. Of course, she sings with exuberance! OTOH, IR resorts to orch with lot of synth stuff.

Simple, enjoyable song without much emotional investment! I think the situation of the song has the "baby-sitter" lady developing some romantic inclinations with the widower (dad of the kid).

Fun song - but lot of musical stuff tightly packed in! The fantastic rhythm arrangement for the song is one. Then the fast running melody (and the appropriate words by the lyricist, must have been a struggle). Excellent singing and the whole package well-fit for the mood / childish fun it is supposed to create! What a terrific work! (I cannot imagine another composer doing justice to such genre so many times)

Looks like we have come to THE END of this exercise. Perhaps this is the last original song that we'll be documenting in this thread for the IR-Fazil combo. What a glorious list of albums that this director could gather from the maestro, starting from that excellent poovE poochchooda vA - majority of them within a few years.

This particular number is supposedly melancholic (and the comments under the YT video shows some of the Malayali sentiments towards this number). To me, however, this sounds very simple, not much thrilling moments in the melody or orchestration - just 'listenable' song (not so much 'repeatable').

KJY's voice is very good at this time - but this song is not that much emotional for some reason, like his many other numbers (doesn't even sound like pathos - other IR numbers can create thoNdai-adaikkal...not this one).
