Now we are into 1993 and IR-TFM of that time period is "very-less-known" territory for me, except for some biggies.

Interestingly, this was the time period when he was about to lose his tight grip from the commercial top spot of TFM, even while continuing to do a lot of films - because the propaganda machinery was in full swing.

Well, this song is a first-time-listen for me and when I did a search for lyrics I stumbled upon this interesting blog post - never knew there are such DH fans for Mano:

Though this person lists this song as one of Mano's top numbers, he only sings the concluding pallavi - rest of the whole song is UR's. She is working hard to do justice to the "paLLi aRaikkuL malligaiyai" genre song but fails to impress (me). May be there were some youngsters in 90's who liked it / got a kick out of such singing but my heavy-SJ-bias does not allow me to appreciate other singers

The tune & orch are top-notch and well-suited for the genre (where no one can come anywhere near IR in generating the feel) and can compete with the nilA kAyudhu / nEththu rAththiri yammA kinds effortlessly!

Muthulingam has penned the so-so lines. It's possible the ஜில்லாக்கு புல்லாக்கு பல்லாக்கு லோலாக்கு nonsense was not 100% his own but the contribution of "team", because of demand for such phrases in that time period.

Nice singing by the singer, of this slow-paced soft number (of course, without much emotions thus not getting the required feel for the milieu).

pAdal varigaL are nice, especially the anupallavi is sweet. Ponnadiyan is the lyricist!

Now we are into 1994 and I'll have to start with this fantastic SPB number. This got covered in the IR-SPB thread of the hub and fellow forum-er Jaiganesh (@jvazhkudai) rated this among the top of SPB songs, fittingly! What a lovely, soothing composition - the pallavi gets a keyboard accompaniment that sounds like church organ and has the effect of calming down any agitated mind, fitting to the situation where the hero tries to pacify an agitated girl, possibly!

UR gets to sing only the ending pallavi (with positive response to the boy's efforts thru out the song) and quite a neat job there

As in the case of most of the movies RVU directed (singAravElan exception) , he himself wrote the lyrics and he had mostly been good, including this one!

Extraordinary composition but somewhat spoiled by the "sounds" (especially the rhythm section is unpalatable to me )

This was perhaps the time when there was a lot of criticism on IR's sounds (mainly because of the better recording / sounds of ARR & other competitors at that point of time) and also due to IR's own choice of arrangers / synth etc.

If we don't pay attention to that aspect and focus exclusively on the melody, what a fantastic saraNam! Simply love it!

I'm not a fan of word doubling / adukkuththodar etc in general (which are excuses by the kavingar to fit to the "meter") but those do not sound too bad in this song. Vaali had done a decent job here IMHO.

(My earlier filter was set as "Uma Ramanan" but this song got entered as "Umaramanan" and wasn't included. I got another song from 1990 too, which we'll cover tomorrow)

Very sweet number with mild "northie" feel but enjoyable melody and rooted orch.

While the pAdal varigaL of Vaali have some standard lines for vaLaikAppu, there're also some kuRumbu lines related to breastfeeding

I've listened to all the songs of this album twice today and we can rate this as another "super album" by IR (despite some silly lyrics here and there).

Of course, nillAdha veNNilA tops and followed by 'kaNNE inRu kalyANakkadhai'. Never paid much attention to this album before

Actually I haven't "missed" the ooradangum one, it is from 1994 and planned for later (pudhuppatti ponnuththAyi).

The song that got missed was from 1990 album ethirkkAtRu (rAjA illA rANi enRum rANi dhAn)...will cover today.

This is the missed-out number from 1990

We had hosted 'ingu irukkum kAlam varaikkum' from this album before (#48 of this UR thread). However, I don't think I've heard the name of the movie / album when I've heard the song originally when it got introduced to me (somehow).  

Likewise, though I've not heard about this movie, I've heard this funny song and very clearly remember ridiculing the lyrics those days.
(The pallavi by Vaali is really laugh-worthy IMHO).

Back to 1994, after cataloging that miss. This one a solo song with some chorus. Yet another "first-time-listen" for me.

Going by IR standards, an average song with nothing extra special.

என்றாலும் "இந்த மாதிரிப்பாட்டெல்லாம் ரொம்ப மெனக்கெடாமல் செஞ்சுருப்பாரு" என்று சொன்னால் அது முட்டாள்தனம்.

ஏனென்றால், எல்லாப்பாட்டுமே அப்படித்தான்

அவர் சில நிமிடங்களில் (அதாவது, அவற்றுக்கென்று தனியாக மெனக்கெடாமல்) செஞ்சது தான் - தென்றல் வந்து தீண்டும் போதோ, சுந்தரி கண்ணால் ஒரு சேதியோ - எதுவானாலும்.

A 1994 album song but sounds like recorded a few years back. It's in the same mold as pudhu mAppiLLaikku / rumbumbum (IR style rock & roll) and quite easy to listen / catchy. Not sure if I'll listen it too many times again, however

Looks like the name of the album / movie underwent a change and hence not easy to find a separate audio link also. Anbu sir's spreadsheet itself says Lovers / Vasantham as the two names for this album. Anyways, this research itself is too much for an average number.

Of course, first time listen for me - the lines written by Muthulingam are nice here and there but nothing earth shattering.

What a sweet song! Even after 20+ years, this song sounds so fresh and refreshing!

Terrific melody but very limited (minimal) orchestration - something very unlike IR. Even interludes are minimal - short and functional only. However, with the terrific melody and the wonderful voice of Swarnalatha, the song tops!
(UR is doing more of a support role here & one can at the max give her credits for not spoiling such a wonderful melody).

Pulamaippiththan's pAdal varigaL too sound very fresh and not in any way some "beaten track" stuff. Which is something to be commended, i.e. after IR & his parivAr exploiting the folk genre with 100's of superb numbers over the years, that covered a wide variety of phrases / themes / what not from the villages of TN! With a mild touch of sophistication, he had done a great job!

Got some additional information via Anbu sir's e-mail on that #69 song, sAral veesudhE (vasantham).

That is for a dubbed (most probably, though claimed as remake) movie.

The original was a Telugu movie called 'priyaththamA' (1991 audio, 1992 movie - received vinyl cover pics and will host in the other language vinyl pics thread).

The remake / dubbing was originally named "Lovers - deivaththin theerppu" and the audio got released in 1994. Received the cassette sleeve pic and will host it in that thread.

When the movie eventually got released, the title got changed as "vasantham"

அப்படியாக அந்தப்பாட்டுக்கு என்று ஒரு சிறிய வரலாறு இருக்கிறது.

BTW, another interesting thing happened when I heard "App Jockey" Jayachandran's presentation last evening - it had all great "rock-n-roll" songs of IR (vEgam vEgam pOgum pOgum magic journey / pudhu mAppiLLaikku / rumbum...) - some coincidence

First time listen of this interesting number - actually quite nice

Though MV is not at his best, still manages to do a decent job and UR does good support for a brilliant composition by IR.

After seeing the list of songs, I realized that it contains one terrific number that recently got introduced to me by either raajafm.com or MaestrosApp - the impressive SPB / KSC number "love paNNidaththAn indhappAttu" - superb song! Now I know it is from this album

That song is a must-listen for anyone who had not heard it before! SPB & KSC excel & enjoy in singing that brilliant IR number!

(BTW, I see that the movie direction is credited to Singeetham Srinivasarao - the famous director who worked with Kamal to create such classics as rAjapArvai, aboorva sagOtharargaL & MMKR. No wonder he could easily pick such superb songs from IR).

Vaali's pAdal varigaL are an excellent fit to the difficult melody, though at places he does some TFM cliche stuff (சொல்லுறியே / கிள்ளுறியே for e.g.) ...

We are now nearing the close of this exercise (only a few left). This 1995-er is yet another first-time-listen for me.

IR is well-known for this "genre" (tribal + pAluNarvu + bOdhai etc.) Right from the days of thOttam koNda rAsAva, such songs keep coming in regular intervals (Asaya kAththula thoodhu vittu is the biggest of them all).

This one is handled easily by MV while UR struggles (as mukkal-munagal is not her forte). 

Pulamaippiththan has some stock lines here with nothing interesting. The same mOgam-dhAgam business. Actually IR has to fill the last line of the saraNam with just humming (as there was no need for more such banal stuff).

From time to time, TF people will become suddenly conscious of politics and create a movie that condemns politics / corruption etc. This movie is one such and credited to R K Selvamani for director (who married Roja, the actress who turned into a politician in AP later on).

IR-Vaali combo thus made this song from the NSK / Pavalar Varadharajan style and along with a couple of male voices, UR got the opportunity to sing the interesting song.

Sadly, none of such movies / songs made any difference to the corruption / politics / state of affairs The song talks about Harshad Mehta (who swindled public money in big amounts). Has it stopped? Never, as per the recent news stories where people took away large sums from banks

First-time-listen for me and I couldn't find the video (and don't feel bad about it)...

We're now skipping a couple of years to go to 1997 to record next UR song with IR. That the output of IR himself got reduced in that time period could be the main reason. Besides, UR could have been busy with stage concerts and other shows (her husband was getting into TV shows around this time I think).

This is an interesting album - produced with meager funds possibly (NFDC / Doordharshan funding it seems). The movie supposedly got an award but probably not much known by the public.

The interesting thing about this album is having a song sung by MSV (nalla kAlam poRakkudhu). The whole album is on mio :

I cannot find the remaining song (or songs) of UR on the web, from the 2001 film "kAtRukkenna vEli"

Based on the articles on internet, this movie was directed by Pugazhenthi and the story was that of a eezhappOrALi who comes to TN and gets hospitalized.

Our spreadsheet shows one song "vArthai thavaRi vittAy" for UR. OTOH, the wiki page of the movie presents three songs (one more Bharathiyar song and a slogA) all having UR's voice.

That way, the #75, #76 & #77 of UR's movie singing history could not be located (possibly the audio was not released at all, as the movie itself ran into rough weather in getting released...some web articles say the movie got released in 2001 but one cannot find any audio video links).

This song got credited to one Sindhu in our spreadsheet but UR is very clearly part of the song (@rmdeva provided CD cover that has her name ; interestingly, the movie titles do not mention UR).

Vaali had put together some funny lines for a fast running melody (many such songs came out in 90's from IR's scoresheets). This was the "not-so-great" synth era and people like me paid no attention to such songs then.
