I had been thinking about whether to run a thread on her or not for quite sometime.

Her latest interview in vikatan is the trigger today to open a thread anyways

I can only filter around 75 songs from Anbu Sir's spreadsheet - which includes most TFM albums and some other language ones. Not sure if UR had done a lot in other languages / non-film albums etc in IR's music.

Even if she had, I wonder whether the count could be in "multiple hundreds" IMHO, that standard "inflating business" is there in this interview (much like SPB's 40K songs).

Let me run the catalog, collecting links from web for audio / video / lyrics etc.  After all, some of them were super hits and evergreen classics!

Well, this song has to be the first number - as this was the one that introduced the singer to the TN public. The song needs no intro or any further details, had been discussed often in this and other forums.

UR had done a fantastic job in this song!

UR is one female singer with perfect Tamil diction that was introduced by Raja. There are several songs of hers that are really good but only a few is known to the general public. Poongathave is perhaps the top one followed by Ananda ragam and Nee paathi naan paathi.

I have heard UR before she married Ramanan and used to perform as a singer in Ramanan's Musiano. She got her grounding by singing a number of MSV tunes.

For sometime she was the judge for Raagamalika music show on Jaya TV. She mentioned a few things on this program that were quite eye openers.

On Ananda Raagam she mentioned that the song structure was so complicated that it was unusual to have a charanam the way it is in this song. It went to so many places that she would forget how the pallavi was when she learned the charanam. She was open in the program that she was inexperienced and she is indebted to Raja for trusting her to deliver on this song. She credited the song completely to the genius of the composer.

Even the 2006 version done in Shiva remake for RGV, this song was a duet.

Very sweet song and excellent singing by UR. As quoted in my post in the GA thread, someone had rightly observed that UR's voice is a great match for Aswini (per his comment, both look like sisters )

Manuel veyyil - I have written technically a lot about this song in terms of both harmony and fugue.

There was something that Uma said about this song in Raagamaalika program that I still remember. Raja and Ima and others performed a stage show in Trichy and came to Chennai by train on the morning of this song's recording.

She goes home and she is called to come to the studio for recording. Raja said nothing about this song the day before.

Between 7 and 8:30 am this masterpiece is created by Raja and there were few rehearsals for such a complex piece of orchestration.

I know that I am preaching to the choir. However I am recording it here as future generations must know such a genius lived amidst us...

#4 தாகம் எடுக்குற நேரம் (எனக்காகக் காத்திரு, சோலோ)

This is one a VM-written number and per Anbu sir's spreadsheet, the disk came out in 1980 itself (i.e. in the year of nizhalgaL). Though the movie got released only in 1981, the song should have been on air thanks to IOKS in 1980 possibly. That way, technically, VM had more than one hit from 1980 (minor correction to my thread there, as songs from EK should be counted in 1980 and 1981).

Regardless, excellent singing by UR. The only word unclear to me earlier was "பாதாளம்" which sounded like "பாராளும்" and got documented that way (corrected today).

This was an early hit as well, from a hit movie from 1981 (I guess deepAvaLi release, bilingual Telugu / Thamizh - not sure if there is UR version in Telugu also or someone else did that).

Unusual kind of number in that album, which was otherwise full of "semi-classical" numbers. koondhalilE mEgam vandhu (bilahari rAgam) is a famous KJY number often discussed by ICM-savvy people

In any case, with this song, UR had the opportunity to sing for the top-star of that time, Sridevi.

A short song in IR's 100th film that came out in 1980. This was used in the BGM as a theme (for the mother of the protagonist - psycho killer, played by Pratap Pothen).

AhA! app sir, these songs are a music collector's delight. Uma Ramanan has been extremely lucky to have bagged some of IR's hand-picked compositions. Apart from her solos which have acquired the 'classic' status like "Ananda raagam", "Aru adhu Azham illa", I am particularly fond of her duets with KJY - "BhoopALam isaikkum", "AgAya veNNilAvE","kaNmaNi nee vara". She has a very unique, sweet voice with more restraint on emotions,  less on sangathis.

Since the #6 was a short song, adding one more for the day

This is a sweet number from the 1981 album that also had the SJ-SPB duet kAviriyE kAviriyE. (I think the movie came out in 1982 - either way, my college days and I remember very well both the songs)! This is one of the few duets she got to sing with MV and that was a sweet combo as well!

Nice waltz number with IR's typical bass guitar adding to sweetness!

Superb duet from the multilingual Rajini-Madhavi starrer (that was supposedly one of the dumbest movies of that time period, that failed at BO besides being panned by everyone).

The Malayalam version of the song (from the movie "garjanam") does not feature UR but SJ. And PJ replaced MV, one can listen to the Malayalam version on this link:

unlike the other songs we've hosted so far, this one is an "unknown" one!
(i.e. not hit, don't think the movie got released, public pretty much unaware of the song, me too full listen only today for the first time).

It's not really a duet - UR sings the first two alaigalE portions, then comes SPB portion and finally UR does another alaigalE stuff. In-between some interesting string section.

Very situational - even poetic
(The pAdal varigaL are by Kavingar, possibly set to some stage-play kind of situation).

Well, this should be accounted to make sure we don't miss any of the "hundreds of songs" that UR happened to sing

Back to a hit song, from a hit movie (possibly the first Rama.Narayanan movie that IR did and the movie was a money earner, with Karthik-Radha in the lead).

This song is pretty much in the 'paLLi aRaikkuL malligayai' style - but not for the heroine but cabaret dancer.

UR does the song with ease (but cannot add any "extra" elements that SJ can typically add - simple, straightforward delivery).

Per Anbu sir's spreadsheet, this seems to be the ONLY song UR had been privileged to sing with her husband under IR's baton.

Unfortunately for the pair, even this number was not the one featured with the video

IR (or the director / producer) had other plans and did another version of the same song - with the same track - and SPB / SPS were the singers. That is the one seen with the movie video.

Actually, the UR-AVR version does not seem to exist anywhere on the web. (I had been privileged to listen from the personal collection of a fellow IRF today that special version, that goes with a different humming from the SPB-SPS version...it goes like, "ஹோர ஹூரா ஹோரா ஹுரா ஹோர ஹூரா" )

The song had been featured in the VM thread (as the pAdal varigal got penned by him and the song - I mean SPB-SPS version - was a hit upon arrival, frequently played in buses). However, after listening to the song today, I'm reminded of listening to the UR-AVR version during my college days as well!

I noticed that some words are different from the SPB-SPS version 'கன்னிச்சிட்டு' is 'சின்னச்சிட்டு' in this song.

This is a first-time-listen song for me, once again introduction solely because of Anbu sir's spreadsheet.

A short thAlAttu (much like the moodupani one) and this one has pAdal varigaL by Dr Kalimuthu (possibly the minister in MGR's cabinet, who did a few film songs those days).

Very simple thAlAttu - for the movie situation. It is interesting to see that a HC fan has hosted EVEN this song on youtube நாட்டில் எப்படி எப்படியெல்லாம் ராசா ரசிகர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதற்கு இந்தப்பாடல் எல்லாம் யூட்யூபில் இருப்பது ஒரு சோறு பதம்!
