This is also the one thing I really miss about IR today - the pristine acoustic guitar parts which he very rarely seems to write these days.

He did use it in Vaanam Mella first interlude. Or was it nylon string?

EDIT:  Listening to it now, sounds like it might have been soft electric.

Listened to the song now, not one that I have heard too many times, mainly because I think Raja's voice sounds a bit strained when he hits those high notes (he's 70, so understandable) - and it does seem like soft electric as you say. I was thinking more about the acoustic guitar - other instrument counterpoints, the arpeggios on interesting and unusual chords like Poove sempoove and the songs of EVK, or short solos executed with precision picking and slides and vibrato (Ilaya nila) which were a staple in the 80s songs and BGMs. The last guitar-guitar counterpoint (acoustic) I recall is the 'Nalam vaazha' 2nd interlude. I would be happy if I am wrong and someone can point me to other such songs or BGM pieces I may have missed...

He used acoustic guitar (but without counterpoint IIRC) in Roja Poonthotam first interlude.  Also, in the interludes of Khajiraho.  Nothing since then AFAIK.

And ever since he's gone uber-orchestral, he's started using the harp a lot more (especially Mugilo).  Maybe that acts as a substitute for acoustic, I don't know.  But the Vaanam Mella part, I somehow feel he would have used acoustic there earlier instead of electric.   I think I even intuitively heard it as acoustic!

There is this ever-so-slight reverb which is what suggests electric guitar to me - with acoustic it would be more of a natural sustain rather than reverb if you get what I mean. It is also possible that Attila played it on the electric guitar, but on an acoustic patch, I can't be sure. It isn't always easy to say which instrument it is, especially so with someone like Raja who specializes in writing for instruments outside their traditional scope.

I think that along with jazz, Raja over the last couple of years has probably been doing some serious study of these quaint little wcm instruments like the harp and how to write interesting music for them within the popular music setting. Notwithstanding the genius that he is, you know, to write music for an instrument you need to be able to play it or at least understand the instrument, know its strengths and its repertoire well. As V_Sji once said somewhere, most current MDs use new sounds in their music by buying them ( ), while Raja discovers new sounds by tuning and using instruments in a certain context. Take the way the Veena is used in this Nenjathai Killadhe BGM. It is a new sound and setting for the Veena if you ask me.

Absolutely haunting, psychotic, mental BGM from Moodupani. Wish Raja gets roped in for a thriller/horror/murder mystery movie again soon. He absolutely cuts loose for such films, doesn't he? - Sigappu rojakkal, Moodupani, Poovizhi vaasalile, Nooravdhu naal. All those movies have at least one spooky classic and absolutely transfixing scores - Ninaivo oru paravai, En iniya pon nilaave, Paatu enge, Vizhiyile mani vizhiyile...
