Best Song of the Year (2013)
Best Song of the Year (2013)
As last year (2013) ended with Maestro's five excellent soundtracks for us to hear.
Chiththirayil NilachOru
Naadi Thudikkuthadi
Megha
Onaayum Aattukuttiyum
Oru Oorla
I know we didn't have a mighty Sri Rama Rajyam or Neethaane Pon Vasantham, but last year was not inferior at all. It might appear simple and minimalist (due to budget constrains of the movies), but in terms of soul and longevity, it has it's due. It's time for us to pick the best one (s) we like. I have enabled multiple poll option, so that you can choose more than one if you feel so. Please also mention why you like them better than the rest to initiate some interesting discussion. Please also share how was 2013 musically (compared to earlier years) of Maestro.
Soundtrack-wise I guess Megha would win hands down (if OAK was excluded since it has background scores). I can add another thread for best soundtrack of 2013, if you wish.

So far it would be Jeevane, Kalvane, Mugilo Meghamo (solo), En Devathai, Chellam konjum poove, nandri solla vendum, kaalayile maalai vanthathu, kallaale senji vechcha (male), ippadiyum oruththan undu, ungappan pera solli, veli nattu graama purathil, en poo nenjai in that order.

V_S,
Looks like your intro to the poll might influence people to think more about songs other than 'Jeevaney'

mayil, Yes that was intentional
Good to see a three way tie between nandri solla vendum, jeevanE jeevanE and kaLvanE kaLvanE with Mugilo Megamo (solo) leading the way

Nandri Solla Vendum, Kalvane and Mugilo (IR Solo) in that order. My most favorite soundtrack was Chithiraiyil Nila Choru, notwithstanding seikooli-sEdhAram stuff in the lyrics.
Re: Best Song of the Year (2013)
For me, Nila Choru and Megha.
Nandri Sollave- En Devadhai- Mugilo - the top 3 songs of the year.

Voted for all 5 of nilAchORu, 1 from nAdi, 1 from oru oorla & 5 from mEghA (excl YSR mugil & PPK)
I guess it would have been more thrilling to have a "pick-only-one" option

Re: Best Song of the Year (2013)
I actually might select all the songs in the list. What a delightful year it had been for a Raja fan!
In my opinion, every single album released in 2013 is unique in it's own. (Or always the case with Raja for that matter ).
Megha is certainly THE monster. I'm still listening to the album and couldn't get it off yet.
Chithirayil Nilaachoru is another colossal soundtrack where it's about out and out classicism. As Rozavasanth described CN, "நம் பழம் நினைவுகளை நவீனத்தில் மீட்டெடுக்கும் முயற்சி”.
Then the other two albums Naadi Thudikkuthadi and Oru Oorla which I liked quite much too.
Well it's really difficult to choose a BEST song from these. But yeah, there are quite a few favorites to point out.
1. Mugilo (Solo) 2. Jeevane Jeevane 3. Nandri Solla Vendum 4. Chellam Konjum 5. Velinaattu Graamapurathil 6. Kalvane 7. Vanaththil Vanna Malargal 8. Ungappan Pera 9. En Devathai 10. Kallaale Senju Vacha (Male)

Re: Best Song of the Year (2013)
Listening to all 22 songs again and again. Leaving out six. It is tough to leave as almost all songs I am listening with same interest, yet with heavy heart I am going to leave out these songs. 16 impressive songs kallaale senji vechcha (female) [male version is better], Oo La La, kaadhale illaatha [in terms of longevity], puththam puthu kaalai [only reason I like the original better], enna vEndum [tune is very bland for me], thedi ennai kaanave [too short].

Re: Best Song of the Year (2013)
I was barely able to contain my excitement when sneak peeks of the recording of mugilo were released. Kalvane was a totally unexpected googly from IR and completely swept me off my feet as I heard it after downloading it from Itunes (where I created an account just for buying this album, btw). Jeevane grew on me, aided no doubt by V_Sji's fabulous write up viewing it as a reverse requiem. I also just voted for Megha as my favourite album of 2013. Nevertheless, the song I am going to pick as "Da best of 2013" is a dark horse - "Nandri solla vendum" from CNC. What a delightful composition in Hamsadhwani! When was the last time we heard such music in TFM? How many delightful new phrases in the rAgam! Anju swarangaLLukuL ethana pAdalgal!
Edit: I should add that I haven't really warmed up to NT songs, though I can't really say I have given them a good listen either. What would you folks pick as The best, must listen song from the album? I am prepared to give it another try.

NT is a dark horse not when it comes to just listing, but listening too. I love three songs; En DEvathai, En Poo Nenjai and VeLinaattu Graamapuraththil. Many pick 'en dEvathai' from NT, but all three songs are worth the Gold. Please give a try, you will definitely like it.

Thanks V_Sji. Will listen. Btw, is it possible to see who voted for what ? The most amusing outcome of this poll so far has been - 0 votes for Putham pudhu kAlai. If that number changes, I would like to see the guilty parties own up to it.

Agree with a_e that a one-option poll would have been interesting and more accurate to choose THE best.
And ever since Raaja ventured outside TF, is this the first year in which no non-TF album released? Will be an interesting stat.

Re: Best Song of the Year (2013)
kaLvane kaLvane - not just 2013 - this is my song for the whole of 2000s and 2010s.
To draw a parallel, this song structure is almost like mounamana neram from salangai oli in terms
of rhythms (one for pallavi and one for charanam), brilliant pauses in pallavi and interludes and charanam
and silky singing, one of the best male singing performances since vijay prakash's om sivoham.
but the envelope, template, or genre - is all delightful jazz compared to the salangai oli song - but
the presence of genius is as markedly visible throughout as the 1984 masterpiece album and we are discussing an
album 30 years since that mammoth album.. No need to go into how the recording for this song is crisp and neat..
Musicallly this is the song that I have played max number of times..

I am tempted to agree, even though I am also very partial to Muthal Murai, Kaatrai Konjam etc. But those songs and all the others that I have liked of noughties Raja, I have had to listen to a few times before I could really love them. I had coached myself to be patient with noughties Raja, something that I almost never had to do with his 80s songs. Except Kalvane....it clicked immediately. I had my hopes up after the comments describing it as a real jazz feast and any time I have high expectations usually works against me. Not this time...it was just like the old days, which I have never actually seen, only experienced while discovering those classics. The same effervescence, free spirited, uninhibited joyfulness, almost too sweet to swallow without being overwhelmed (my parallel here is Seer Kondu Vaa). Even the way he seemed to get the cymbals to say "hush" in the second interlude..just vintage IR in brand new contemporary clothes. I could go on and on about this song. It is overwhelming that he keeps turning out great compositions after so many years and so many films and to do something that still has the spontaneity and freshness of old is incredible.
I goofed up and voted only for Kalvane, not realising it was a multi option poll. I would have also voted for Mugilo, Jeevane, Nandri Solla Vendum and Kaalaiyile. Honourable mention for Kalalle Senju Vachcha.

His naughty, playful side - The surprises, suspense, the teasing . Totally get why Mysskin and a few others who have interacted with him describe him to be like a child. Clearly comes out in his music.

The most calmful and peace inducing composition of 2013 is Mugilo (for me), rendered by Raaja (not the duet version; i am sad that Raaja allowed that butchering). Period.

Best song of the year poll paartha vodane in my mind started the conflict between kalvanE and veLi naattu graamam. After evaluating various factors, I finally decided to go for foreign village. AnA ellAm check boxes Oda irukku!!! seri let me select the songs I like in various albums nnu selected the following. Nandri solla , veLi naatu graamam, kaLvanE. I wanted to select En devadhai too, but in all these muliple choice melee, forgot to check and the mundhirikottai in me clicked submit. ippo aaraavadhu en devadhai pidikkaadhavaa, on my behalf should cast a proxy vote for en devadhai so that its 'like' count soars.
