My father was the last one I told in my house to. I told him, 'I have started reading the Quran and it gives me a lot of peace.' He said to me, 'Yuvan, I am not comfortable with you becoming Islamic.'
Wow! I think that last stuff may have been made up by TOI. I remember Rajkiran telling in an Interview (Suriya Vanakkam) how Illayaraja was his spiritual advisor and they used to go to Bangalore Dargah together.
Hindu has also reproduced the same interview in Tamil. So it is safe to assume Yuvan said what he said. Frankly, I don't grudge Raaja here. Raaja advising Rajkiran was different. Rajkiran is Muslim by birth and IR advising him spiritually shows his secular mindset. Yuvan is his son. It would be wrong and illiberal on you or me to pass a judgement on his conversion. But IR is entitled to, as a father. And him not being comfortable did not make him stop Yuvan from converting or Yuvan himself from converting. It again underlines his secular credentials. He is simply not comfortable. And as a dad, he has the right to express that when his son tells him the decision. That will not make him any less secular IMO
Well said, DM.
Thanks kiru. I see a number of questions/opinions online. Let this be one more
1. "Raaja's temper" World renowned. No human is perfect.
2. "He questioned Yuvan on singing for ARR" He asked him "what made you sing?" and not "Why the hell did you sing?" as a legendary composer, he is again entitled to ask his son, also a composer, what made him sing for another composer. If Yuvan were an upcoming, budding singer, the question would be silly. But not to a son/composer.
3. Raaja's ritualism. This is the only place where IMO Yuvan hasn't understood his dad fully. Well who am I to say this? Frankly a nobody and Yuvan is a dear son. So, பிழை இருப்பின் மன்னிக்க. But Raaja is not just about ritualism. There is a spiritual side to him (Ramana Maharishi is the anti-thesis of ritualism and Raaja, a staunch devotee, realizes this obviously). Any person who writes a song like Bikshai Paathiram Endhi Vandhen cannot be anything but spiritually realized. Yuvan stops with ritualism giving reader the impression IR is only about rituals and superstitions. idhula enakku konjam varuththam dhaan Yuvan mEla.
4. Raaja's secularism. I've mentioned that above and frankly, can't able to understand calling a father who has an opinion on his son's religious inclination unsecular. It's an opinion a father is perfectly entitled to have ffs! Flabbergasted people even discuss this (twitter, FB, etc.)
5. All this wouldn't matter if I were only a fan of his music and not him. Blessed are those who fall in such a category. But I happen to admire the man too. So I had to get this out for my inner peace
So except for that one point on ritualism, I find both Yuvan and Raaja very consistent and it was a very frank interview and in fact, Yuvan speaking his mind on being the underdog, etc. was spunky and can't help but wonder pulikki porandhadhu poonai AgAdhu (though I am not a fan of Yuvan's music). In places, his respect for his father bothered on reverence and it was nice to see him bring his father's "dhArALa manasu" out openly and no small credit to his mother there. His reason for conversion was convincing and deep and his personal loss and relationship status seemed a genuine voice from a broken man. Felt sorry for him there. So I guess he needs the peace of mind and if he finds it in Islam, may Allah be with him and guide him to find his peace

DM, again I concur with you. I still think Yuvan has its strength .. He has the will power and gumption of his dad for sure, may be a little less of the diligence.
Yuvan decided to follow a format of music which is much easier than that of his dad's. Karthik tries to follow his dad and since it is a difficult path, he has not had that much commerical success.
Dad's way requires a strong melody, as it is sometimes very minimalistic in orchestration. The other approach requires lots of bells/whistles to make it look 'more serious'.

I do not see much of a difference in the question when it is paraphrased or told in 2nd person. we never know what was the literal tone and exact words used. But it does give us a drift of discomfort (seems so, i could be wrong too).Drunkenmunk wrote:

Also, is it "what made you sing for another composer" that is a problem? or "what made you sing for arr?". Given the context that Yuvan backs up with "when i sang for arr, it became a big deal", do we guess that it is the latter.

"When, Bharathiraja saw the movie after my work, he questioned how am I able to deliver such a wonderful music, even for a film which I did not like, well, all I have to say is; I can't be unfaithful to music."
One of the best quotes by Raaja, IMO.

Like you say, we don't know the exact tone. And also, "it became a big deal" with fans or inside the house? I presume with the public and fans. Without knowing the tone or who it became a big deal for precisely, we'd be ill placed to assume a negative drift at home here IMO
PS: The latest single is horrendous. nArAsam.

Suresh Krishna (director of Sathya / Veera / Indiran Chandiran) has written a book and the following tweets by Rajini Ramachandran are quite interesting. These contain images of a few pages of the book :
Page 1 : http://twitter.com/rajinirams/status/499775978864771072
Page 2 : http://twitter.com/rajinirams/status/499776148729888768

Page 4 : http://twitter.com/rajinirams/status/499777096395157506
Gist of them :
1. Raja recorded a song for Veera which was initially approved by producer / director and then later director & his "team" disliked the tune.
2. Suresh Krishna told rAsA that he & his crew felt it could be better
3. rAsA was upset that Suresh Krishna talked about "his crew" and made two phone calls to Panju A (producer) and Rajini (hero) about his displeasure, right in front of director
4. rAsA sent off the director "see you later" with iRukkam
5. The director went to producer and hero, asking them "what to do". Rajini advised him to simply sit tight and do nothing. (Which the director pugazhndhufies as great decision / advice).
6. rAsA himself called all three to studio and gave them different songs that became chartbusters.
One thing that caught my eye is this Rajinikanth comment to rAsA :
Something similar to what we've been talking about, for years before too

Aalap should have ended the interview when the dumbwit interviewers asked him how Bass guitar looks and sounds like
common thread I had noticed among celeb-Raaja fans from TN is that they recount only '80s hit' songs which any mellisai/solace needy ones
would/could relate to and find a place in their compilation cds but nothing can do a greater disservice to Raaja than this constant pandering
of 80s hit numbers every single time. thankfully our padosi celeb fans(cue:Shareeth/Vamsy/Keeravani) have much better sense of Raaja
The interviewers confirmed my long held view that current gen of avg. Indian listeners just don't have the ear for real bass, what they think bass
is mostly bloated/heart pulsating/thumping variety hence all the consumables from headphones/music systems @home/in-car entertainments/
even the cd recordings are tuned exactly to that. this ain't just an India specific phenomena but other countries have an option of neutral/flat/uncolored devices and recordings but avg. Indian listener are mostly condemned to this system.

People trying hard for vambu...

This is not a new anecdote (and people familiar with the Kamal Haasan mythology will know where this is headed), but it was something to hear it in person. The Harry Nilsson original is a mid-range song, and the Three Dog Night cover touches a few higher notes, but when Kamal Haasan launched into the number, he leaped over an octave and hit a stunning falsetto note – it isn’t there in either of the earlier versions.
This is probably how he sang the song that night, at the function, and the audience applauded. Seated in the audience, and listening very carefully to the way Kamal caught that pitch, was Ilaiyaraja.

I think it was One is the Lonliest Number and Ninaivo Oru Paravai which was inspired by One's the Lonliest Number. Remember Kamal refusing to sing and IR telling him this is similar to what he sung the previous night
