Kannadasan & IR

The best TFM lyricist in history, without question, is kavingar. We've often heard rAsA showering praises on him as well.

Unfortunately, the combination of KD-IR had only limited output. Between the years 1976 and 1981 (some got released in 1982 or later but written prior).

Fewer they may be, not quite insignificant. For e.g. 'iLamai enum poongAtRu' can easily be among the best-ever TFM numbers.

Since I'm on a trip now to identify, catalog and appreciate the lyricists of rAsA hits, kavingar should not be ignored and his works with rAsA easily deserve their own discussion thread.

palootti vaLarththa kiLi was reportedly the first project of Kavingar with IR.

IR himself stated in an old interview that Kavingar wrote "kaNNA OdOdi vA, rAsA vA" as his welcome to IR, in the 'kola kolayA mundhirikkA' song of that album.

Now, that song was a patti thotti hit. Then there was the radio-only-hit of 'nAn pEsa vandhEn, sollaththAn Or vArththai illai'.

So, two hit numbers for the combo from their first album together :

(There's no vinyl at musicalaya to authenticate on 'nAn pEsa vandhEn' at this point of time )

I guess it won't be all that easy to catalog ALL the songs that Kavingar wrote for rAsA, given that not all vinyl covers are available on the web.

For some, it's possible to look at the movie video titles and just confirm that such and such movie had Kavingar in the titles but cannot confirm what exact song(s) he wrote in that album

In any case, let's work on the positive side

Means, take those ones that can be authenticated by vinyl covers & such and not worry about suspicious ones (like 'nAn pEsa vandhEn'). That way, this thread won't be in the usual method of trying to be chronological / get all of them here etc.

Starting with a children's play song, it suddenly jumps into some serious family relationship stuff - very situational. There's also some story telling in brief, that one can get only if they watch the movie (or at least know the story).

Regardless of the contents, the lines are so smooth with the melody and easy on ears Very enjoyable stuff that way and it was typical during the kavingar era. No forced word stuff and also no "out-of-place-agenda-stuff" - that is, forced. Even if he had cleverly inserted the 'rAjA vA' thingy, that should still fit into the theme / situation and should not be out of place...

Our musicalaya ubayam vinyl collection has only two films each for 1976 & 1977 (annakkiLi, bathrakALi, kavikkuyil, deepam) and none of these had Kavingar.

While I could rely upon old pEsum padam interview for 'kola kolayA', I can't do that for other movies of those two years. So, let me switch to 1978 and highlight a few songs. As we get more authentications, we can include more songs from the oldies...

1978 should start with the biggest movie of the year for rAsA, 16 vayadhinilE Kavingar wrote two numbers for Bharathiraja's first effort - Attukkutty muttai & sevvandhippoo mudichcha chellakkA. (manjakkuLichchu by Alangudi Somu, sendhoorappoovE by GA...chOlam vedhakkayilE not seen in that cover).

I don't want to simply mention these two numbers and pass. Both are historic in their own right. And deserve a post each!

Can anyone update all songs written by Kannadasan for Ilayaraja?

I have the entire series of 'Thirai Isai Padalgal' of Kannadasan. There are 6 books. I will try to isolate the IR-KD songs. I will do this in parts as I get time. I hope this does not interfere with the flow of what App is trying to do.

Thanks a lot App for the list of songs penned by KD for IR. Isn't Niram Maraatha Pookal - Aayiram Malargale by Kaviarasar as well. They mentioned that as Kaviarasar's last song in the 2011 Chennai concert.

Yes, Ayiram malargaLE malarungaL of NMP (also iru paRavaigaL from the same movie) are by Kavingar and both are included in the above list

But it could not be his last one, being a 1979-er

(The popular notion is that kaNNE kalai mAnE was the last...the last one released was 'dEvan thandha veeNai' but it got penned much earlier)

Yes, absolutely. What a mesmerizing tune! Thanks for the lyrics. I almost sang the song with lyrics. What a feeling when I sing this song! Every note is dripping with sweetness and surprises. No one can even think of such a tune. It's not that it is difficult to sing (as someone is cribbing out), but it is difficult to bring that bhaavam, that's where we need two of the greatest singers of all time. Singing is not just about singing difficult notes, it is about how to bring life and expressions to the words. This is the basic in playback singing.

Much has happened with our efforts to collect information on IR albums, details etc since the last post in this thread

Though we have kind of identified ALL the songs that kavingar penned for IR, we didn't have cross-reference-check etc. at that point of time. I've also not spent any time on this thread to ratify / update

Now we have this comprehensive database / spreadsheet provided by Anbu sir & we have practically the most accurate list of kavingar's songs with IR music. Our earlier collection of the list of songs above (showing 124 numbers) is not too bad at all - actually, filtering Anbu sir's spreadsheet shows a count of 126, just 2 additions

Let me collect lyrics for ALL the songs (of course, one song at a time) in this thread in the coming days / weeks / months

We've already collected two, from pAlootti vaLarththa kiLi and I'll continue with our typical serial numbering as well.

It's interesting I've never identified this song as an IR number in the radio era or for decades thereafter

Only in the internet era did I found out that this was indeed an IR number ; even at that time, I was thinking that there could have been an older PS number "vAdiyammA pon magaLE" and this was only a comical remix of that

It turned out to be an original only, with such a sweet pallavi hidden in a comical song. Actually, even the saraNam portions are quite interesting, a lovely "fusion" of semi-ICM & western, as seamless as we've seen IR doing in later years in more serious mode. Here it was in comical situation (with Manorama, YGM and such gumbal on screen).

kavingar has some nice lines - for the semi-classical portions he gets into literary mode but switches to colloquial / conversational in the "western" portions!

Much like how IR seamlessly integrates different genres of music! Here kavingar does the same in poem, with nothing felt out of place!

This is quite an interesting song (as I cannot make head or tail of it by way of the actual meaning - as I have no clue about the movie situation )

Vaguely it looks like women teasing a lady who has lust However, I cannot be sure...those who have watched the movie (or can decipher the poem) please comment.

Very sweet pallavi melody (and the voice of PS is very sweet in this song). However, the overall song cannot be easily identified as a "rAsA song" Typical 70's number and I would have agreed if someone said MSV / VK / S-G or anyone else had done this song.

There had been only one album for IR with kavignar in his debut year of 1976 (palootti vaLarththa kiLi) and all the five songs he penned in that have been documented / pAdal varigaL collected

Moving on to 1977, there seems to be quite a few (at least 27 songs, quite a number of them big hits).

Let us start with the iconic album / movie, 16 vayadhinilE where kavignar wrote two songs.

#6 செவ்வந்திப்பூ முடிச்ச சின்னக்கா
(16 வயதினிலே, 1977)


People in the patti-thotti of TN were made familiar of the film's dialogues thru the olichchithram that got played frequently in kOlAmbi speakers (in all village festivals / weddings / sadangugaL etc) those days and many of them were popular for years, as punchline (e.g. இது எப்படி இருக்கு).

One of those that got repeated by people those days was the mayilu dialog of "சப்பாணின்னு சொன்னா, "சப்"புன்னு அறைஞ்சிரு ".

This song is related to that dialog (i.e. after the chappANi character actually carries out that encouragement, comes back and "reports" to mayilu ) I think that's when this song comes in the movie, with that slapping sound used in the prelude.

There's brief use of "oyil kummi" in the song that BR cleverly used (a TN form of folk art, possibly never shown before on screen). IR briefly switches to strings in WCM fashion in the second interlude in his own style before jumping back to TN folk. Other than such terrific inserts, it was totally the "new-brand-IR" nAdan song, with superb chorus / melody / orch. all served in equal proportions.

For his part, Kannadasan did a fluent job - effortlessly getting into the BR-format nAdan language (sevvanthippoo mudichcha chinnakkA / chinnayyA) while keeping his own poetic sensibilities intact (Aththula kAththadichchA alaiyOdum, keNda veLayAdum, comparing the girl's eyes) , all the while conforming to the melody sweetly!

Today I've been reminded by Anbu sir that I have missed the 1976 song "dear uncle" from uRavAdum nenjam

Actually, I have it in the list of songs to be covered - but somehow I replaced the year incorrectly as 1977

For today, I've arranged to post on the other awesome song from 16 vayadhinilE (the Attukkutty number).

So, the "dear uncle" of uRavAdum nenjam has to wait for the next post, let me complete what I've got now

This song is a funny one - with absurd references as "lamb laying eggs" and such plus SJ doing old woman voice (pazhaya nenappudA pErANdi) and finally concluding with a donkey responding to the singing of the hero

However, the melody is excellent - for even such a funny number. On top of it, IR decorates the song with some fantastic uRumi mELam backed portions! That second saraNam with uRumi backing is simply awesome! IR also follows up with a terrific uRumi backed interlude - very rustic and enjoyable!

Innovations in every song made the initial days of IR immensely enjoyable to the TN public! Let us reminisce those fun days
