 The plot thickens   

All this arasiyal talks makes me curious. Especially Plum's points. I have finished IR's Paal Nila Paadhai. Will soon put a twitlonger and share it here on a few mindblowing excerpts. adha thavira inga pArunga, IR speaks about people using him by requesting him for help. The title of the chapter is பொய் கவிதைக்கழுகு! தர்மத்திருக்கு?

Over to IR in a particular stage in the chapter:
... ஒரு திரைப்பட கவிஞர். அவருக்கு திரைப்படத்தில் எழுத சந்தர்ப்பம் கொடுக்க முடியவில்லை. அடிக்கடி என்னை பாக்க வரும் அவர், அன்று "அண்ணே எனக்கு பாட்டு எழுத வேணாமுண்ணே! -- எப்பவோ வர்ற பாட்டெழுதி அதுல குடும்பம் நடத்த ரொம்ப ஸ்ரமமா இருக்குண்ணே! எனக்கு ஒரு புத்தக லைப்ரரி வெச்சுகுடுத்தா இந்த பக்கமே தலைவைக்க மாட்டேண்ணே" என்றார். அவருக்கு அதற்க்கு தேவையான பணத்தை கொடுத்து அனுப்பி விட்டேன்.

"இல்லண்ணே. அத பாத்துக்கறது ரொம்ப கஷ்டமா இருக்குண்ணே! சரிண்ணே பாட்டு வேணாம்ண்ணே! எனக்கு ஒரு சிறு நிலம் இருக்குண்ணே! அதுக்கு ஒரு "பம்ப்புசெட்" போட்டு கொடுத்துட்டீங்கன்னா சினிமா பக்கம் வரவே மாட்டேண்ணே! இனிமே சத்தியமா உங்கள தொந்தரவு செய்யமாட்டேண்ணே" என்று சத்தியம் செய்தார்!

பாப்புலர் ஆனபின் என் முன் வந்து நெஞ்சை நிமிர்த்தி கொண்டு வந்த விதம் இருக்கிறதே, என்னை கன்னத்தில் அறைந்தது போல் இருந்தது!...
...இந்த சம்பவத்தில் வரும் கவிஞரின் பெயரை எழுதினால் நீங்கள் அவரை கீழ்த்தரமாக நினைக்க கூடும். அதனால் என்னுடைய எண்ணம் யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல் அவருடைய தவறை அவருக்கு சுட்டி காட்ட வேண்டும் என்பதுதான்...
...நீங்கள் "யார் அந்த கவிஞர் என்று யார் யாரையோ நினைத்து மண்டையை போட்டு குழப்பி கொள்ள வேண்டாம்." கவிதையே பொய்யென்று புரியும். அவருக்கு தான் பொய்யில் தான் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்று புரிந்தால் போதும், புரியவில்லை என்றால் இறைவனின் படைப்பு அப்படி.

This could be any lyricist and could be needless ranting by some nondescript ass (nAn dhAn  ) here. But the last 2 paragraphs with Plum's above points made me curious to share it in this IR-VM lyrics discussing thread. Apologies if anyone felt I am needlessly kiLarifying more arasiyal on a page to discuss lyrics and music and may more apologies and embarrassment be due from me if this lyricist is not VM.

A sweet KSC delight. It came during the early days of KSC in TFM and accordingly the emotions are not that accurate (sounding like a church-hymn )

Actually VM's first line of pallavi & the melody of IR - all sync with that kind of churchiness - like a typical Kerala paLLi song. "சந்தோஷம் இன்று சந்தோஷம்"

In any case, not much complications in the lines overall. Simple lines for a simple song, no irritations...

Heard this song only on buses and never knew the movie's name. There had been many such Sivakumar movies those days it appears (possibly Malayalam remakes).

Another bus-only-heard number of that year and only during the internet era I could find out which movie the song is from. However, there is no question that this was reasonably popular in parts of TN.

Supposedly sOgam / thaththuvam etc and is supposed to evoke strong emotions in listeners. Unfortunately, sans any interesting lines, none of that happens - despite the sweet music and KJY's voice! VM recycles his stock words such as ஊமை, சொந்தம், பந்தம், மௌனம் etc with absolutely no strking thoughts or flow.

Look at the boring set of words put together:

poojaikkEththa poovidhu (nee dhAna andhakkuyil, GA-KSC)

Reportedly the first TFM song recorded in KSC's voice (but didn't get released until a couple of years later). Full of country-side-lewd language, one of the most fav territories of VM and he takes total advantage of it, right from the first line

(If someone is so naive not to understand what kind of 'poojai' is being talked about here, they are not qualified to discuss TF lyrics at all :oops:Well, VM works hard to include such ignorant people as well by explaining more in the next few lines with as lewd language as possible, e.g. "சேலையிழுத்து விடுவதே").

On the positive side, there are some very authentic country usage (நோகாம, அச்சு வெல்லப் பேச்சுல, வெறும் வாய மெல்ல, தோதாக etc). Other than that, not much take away from this from lyrical PoV.

In the nit-pick thread, I mentioned about KSC messing up  துள்ளிப் போகும் புள்ளி மான (It became துல்லிப் போகும்  புல்லி மான், reminding one of the physics classes where "pulley" is involved). What happened to the kavingar who is supposed to correct the pronunciation in this case? (Funny to see another kavingar singing that duet with the MD himself being a kavingar also).

kaNNAna kaNNA onna enna solliththAlAtta (nee dhAnA andhakkuyil, KSC)

pulambal thAlAttu genre. This is another "first-in-TFM" for KSC (i.e. solo). As in the case of the other song, being not experienced enough with the language / phrases, KSC renders it without much feelings. That way, even the little bit of sentimentu that VM tried to pack into this number is watered down and the song is without necessary emotions.

rAsA tries to get some juice out of whatever situation the director (annakkiLi Selvaraj I think) narrated to him -by using a terrific themmAngu melody and some great interludes to get to the heartstrings of listeners. OTOH, the on-screen things make it sound comical (to me). Please watch / listen / read and judge for yourselves (VM in a poor form here; the song was a bus-hit being part of the "rAsA-recording-center-wave" those days and being part of a soundtrack that had the terrific "en jeevan pAdudhu unnaiththAn thEdudhu" with pAdal varigaL by Panju sir!):

An iconic album - IR / Kamal / KB combo - with all songs (except the English one) by VM. Songs were big hits and are popular to this day.

This one is my most preferred number from the album - unfortunately, got made as the title song on-screen - which irrrrrritated me to no end. (Well, the whole movie was just so-so IMHO).

VM did a decent job with this one!
(I really love the line "எது வந்த போதும் இந்த அன்பு போதும்"):

rAsA gave that gorgeous first guitar interlude for the number and KSC decorated the song further with very effective singing! (The lady has become so efficient just in a couple of years in TFM).

#184 enna saththam indha nEram (punnagai mannan, SPB)

Very famous SPB song that needs no intro to people of this forum. Aptly included in the IR-SPB series .

Perhaps the most heard song on headphone by me. The way in which the drum sounds alternate between ears is so enjoyable! And the wind instrument, AhA what a delicacy! Such a sweet melody in the honey-soaked SPB voice with pleasant chords and accompaniment, instantly throwing one in a night mood - especially the second interlude transports one to an EkAnthamAna malaipradEsam and twilight!

Well, as it was generally the case in that thread, no mention of lyricist or the lines by me. That much only importance :oops:However, the song had a tremendous pallavi that beautifully jelled with the melody / music, creating a nighly feel. Unfortunately, the visuals were totally opposite, KB killed the feel IMHO. May be the people who watched during the release felt it thrilling, but others who heard of situation felt the picturization ordinary...



VM did a fine job with the lines in saraNam as well (that "மங்கை இவள் வாய் திறந்தால் மல்லிகைப்பூ வாசம்" always brings a smile in me)

Whatever love one has for this song can easily be killed by merely watching the video once

What was KB thinking when he filmed this song on Asha Kelunni, a supposedly trained dance dame? Completely :lol:stuff!

In any case, the song is iconic - with every budding singer trying to impress the judges on reality shows such as super singer by killing this VJ number...rAsA supposedly employed "computers" for the first time in studio for programming some loops for the song! It was a newsmaker those days and the song continues to thrill true music lovers even after many years. What a seamless fusion of genres - simply rAsA-innovation stuff (obviously something that others have been trying to mimic for decades now).

Look at the video - listen to the song - and enjoy the not-so-irritating lines penned by VM:

Song with just one saraNam (and one interlude). Sweet song and VM in his strong territory of appreciation of nature (Oh, he started so well with the pon mAlappozhudhu and did a fine job with iLaya nilA later on).

Look at the lovely lines sung by a girl in love who gets drenched in rain:

Such imagery as "குடைக்கம்பி துளிர்த்தது" is so lovely...the poet compares the rain drop on top of the umbrella ferrule to a new blossom! That is the kind of stuff one expects to spring out of poetic mind when in top form and VM obviously was in good nick during this time period!

Another sweet one in this song is "சாரல் பாடும் ஜலதரங்கம்"!  

The video is not too bad either, finally some good picturization in this movie...(BTW, did KB get inspiration from MR's MR?)

kAla kAlamAga vAzhum (SPB-KSC, punnagai mannan)

Very famous song, Kamal & Revathy dancing in funny manner with violin in hand (while the screen stuff is insult to the instrument, rAsA had definitely made it proud with his interesting methods yet again with that instrument). Being a big hit, this naturally got covered in the  IR-SPB thread during mayyam days.

Let us look at VM's lines (One gets reminded of plum's relative making fun of the song as "kALidAsan kamban kooda seyyavillaiyE dharppaNam")...

Though there is some interesting word play (I really love the portion "முள்ளை யார் அள்ளிப்போட்டாலும் முல்லைப்பூவாக மாறாதோ?"), one feels irritated as to whether this song is about love or saNdai

Also, funny phrases such as "பந்தம் நம் பந்தம் என்றென்றும் தீப்பந்தமே" & "பூவுக்கு யார் இங்கு தீ வைப்பது"?

Overall, VM tries to make love as a fighting machinery against "something" (possibly those who oppose luvvu)...whatever, the song got its classic status thanks to rAsA's innovations and able support by SPB-KSC. VM tried his best to bring it down with his cliche stuff but didn't succeed...

I mean in every way - including the sweeter, better lines by VM (despite that tasteless "கொடி ஒன்று கனி ரெண்டு" business)

There are some really sweet lines there, this one being my most fav:

This kind of interesting lines add flavour to the excellent curry already made by rAsA in combo with SPB-KSC!

What's more, this very guy was about to die a decade back and the very TN city Chennai saved his life (kidney transplant - who knows, he possibly got the kidney of a hapless TN-er who had to sell it)! And most of the people who contributed for his treatment - his family didn't have any money for that - were of TN origin! And now this man, who happily got married after that, has kids, continues to live, is cursing TN - what a shameless, thankless world!

Well, any Keralite who makes such horrible remarks on TN should FIRST think about the lakhs of Keralites who either live in or make a living out of TN!

Fun song, supposedly to excite jealousy and confirm love...happens n number of times in TF and one gets to see this repeated even in KH movies

KB / Kamal combo also tries to get some Charlie Chaplin stuff into this movie by this mAmA character. To me it was unfunny and irritating to the core when I watched the movie.

Regardless, rAsA did an excellent job and so did MV as usual. Whether the on-screen stuff gives one the Chaplin-quickie-feel or not, the music definitely does! VM too does a neat job here, getting the words that fit the fast running melody exactly!

One of the well-written pathos songs by VM during the days he worked with rAsA. Especially the second saraNam is terrific, pizhinjifying one's hearts. Those with compassionate hearts cannot help but let their eyes shed tears without control

All these three lines are testimony to VM's word play skills - without distorting the emotions / sentiments :

VM puts his typical stuff together - காதல் ஒரு வேதம் கண்கள் அதை ஓதும் kind of filmy business. Add some more simiar stuff like தேவியே ஆவி நீ தானடி, மூச்சிலே-பேச்சிலே etc and a simple cine-duet results. For everyone of those cine-lyricists, putting a song like this together should have been a piece of cake. (And idiotic VM-fans claim that 90% of IR songs lost quality without VM, there cannot be a worse lie than this).

Look at these lines and judge for yourself :

All-time-fav song! Well, any IR-SPB-SJ song has to be in my fav list by default, with hardly any exceptions. And this one must be among the very top!

Once again VM does a decent job here, with no major irritants The uyarvu naviRchi of comparing kaNNeer with gangai is quite poetic! Also the line "மேகங்கள் போய்விடும் வானம் என்ன போகுமா" is terrific!
