On V_S's suggestion, opening a rock thread.  Discuss your favourites,  any song you heard only recently that you really liked, etc.  

Started to love this, initially thought it was a bit too much of the same as what Fagen/SD were doing in the 70s.  But great chords nevertheless.

This is also a great song in terms of politics, trade unions, etc.

That legendary 4 note motif. The build up, the resolution and the intermediate chords. This is what the Gods listen to when they are drunk (or stoned, depending on your choice of poison). Also have to mention Dick Parry whose Sax solo is equally epic.

Hackett is kind of a blend of Gilmour and Fripp.  Wonderful guitarist, somewhat underrated.

Gilmour - Watch this solo acoustic version of "Breathe" to see how he can hold his own without any of the accompanying psychedelia. Ths is literally where I picked up the chords for the song from   

Great stuff.  There's actually a Stevie Ray Vaughan track with very similar chords to Breathe, can't recall offhand.

Love this track, very catchy beats to go with wonderful piano arrangements.  Her lyrics are very witty too, as they usually are.

A very talented keyboard player college mate (who was a Steely Dan fan) and his band played this at many inter-college fests. Loved the chords then and love it now as I listen to it after many years.

You didn't say that you are especially fond of Steely Dan before?  If you like that song, you should check out some of their stuff.  They always come up with great chords (like on the chorus of this song, or the solo for that matter).

Meantime, here's one of my favourite Judas Priest songs.

Nice. Ya their chord progs are usually very interesting. Not a particularly big fan or connoisseur, but i do listen to and enjoy some of their songs every now and then, which is the case with many other bands as well.

Would say Steely Dan is pretty much mandatory for a guitarist.  Seriously, they've got some of the all time great guitar solos  - Kid Charlemagne/Everything You Did/Peg/Third World Man/Your Gold Teeth II.  And every album from Can't Buy a Thrill to Gaucho (that makes it 8 in toto) is at least very good with some really fabulous ones like Royal Scam and Aja.  Would strongly recommend either of those two (Royal Scam or Aja) as a starting point.

It's interesting to see that in the 80s, the focus of rock guitar shifted completely to shred while SD's songs were all about unusual chord progressions (and they hired some of the best in the business to play them), i.e, more subtle and intricate.

Have heard Aja before   . Plus some other songs which I can't match to their respective albums now. Will explore slowly..

Love the hell out of the Animals album.  Dogs is marvellous.  Cannot recall what Time Flies used to sound like, will have to listen.
