Are you a fiercely proud Tamil Nadu cricketer?
Very, very proud. Very proud. If Tamil Nadu wins the Ranji Trophy, I don’t think anybody will be happier than me.
Very, very proud. Very proud. If Tamil Nadu wins the Ranji Trophy, I don’t think anybody will be happier than me.
So why has Tamil Nadu not won as much as it should have?
I think if someone tells me, any coach or any captain comes and guarantees me that Tamil Nadu will win the Ranji Trophy and he needs a salary of Rs 1 crore to do so, I would hand it over to him personally. Everybody says the batch of 1986-87 was a great team and they won the Ranji Trophy, but it never happened after that. Everybody will have to look inside them before they start being cynical. It is a very young team that Tamil Nadu has got now and to reach the final last year was an amazing achievement. There is a lot of talent that could come good in the future but I think there is a wholesale DNA change that is required in the mindset of cricketers here. We have always been this group that has been called the talented group and never the achievers’ group. That’s because of a mindset shift that we have not done. We have a good club cricket culture here. Everybody gets paid well, a lot of people get settled down and the motivation to go on becomes very minimal. They want to be Ranji Trophy cricketers but nobody wants to be Indian cricketers. I think the ultimate goal is a little lower. If you look at being an Indian cricketer, then you will have Ranji Trophy-winning cricketers. But if you want to play Ranji Trophy cricket and make a good living for yourself, then you won’t even reach the Ranji Trophy. There’s a wholesale shift that needs to happen. We have got a few cricketers now who are looking at the game really well, who are looking to invest in their game really well. Investment is not just in terms of time, not just in terms of hard work. It is in terms of money, it is in terms of thinking. Where there is a will, there is a way. Tamil Nadu has a lot of people who will put money into the game. But the will is what we are lacking.

D(k) used up his quota season 100 against a minnow side TN wasted a slot with Mijay who hardly scores in Ranjis,
should have asked Ash to play as opening bat.

losing to *this* Mumbai after getting a 140 run lead. Only TN fossible, regardless of the late thrill and competitive last session. Maha worstu.Wizzy wrote:D(k) used up his quota season 100 against a minnow side TN wasted a slot with Mijay who hardly scores in Ranjis,

Re: Ranji Trophy and Beyond - Domestic Mattai Pandhu viLayAttu
Key is Siddesh La 150 from 52/5. This is almost like formula for TN. They just see a batsman like that fighting back and admire in awe, and wait for him to get out(Rememeber Sulabh Sauchalay Srivastava who took away a final from us? And I hear he was a convereted opener). This is deja vu. This makes me feel young!

Re: Ranji Trophy and Beyond - Domestic Mattai Pandhu viLayAttu
Well, banana skin day has been postponed, Wiz. After all, Railways is the worst team in the top 2 divisions now.
Every year for the past 25 years, I have gone in believing this will be the year TN wins the trophy, irrespective of current form, skill, team, talent, environment etc. As they go through their usual roller coaster, till they get knocked out there is atleast that nappAsai in the corner of the mind that "This will be the year".
Despite Karnataka's huge head start in the final, and the impossibility of their losing it, and my own support for Karnataka from my heart, there was still the nappaasai last year also even after the first day of the final.
This year, for the first time in 25 years, I am resigned. They simply don't have it in them to win it this year. So, anything is a bonus.
This is a talented team but they just simply don't seem to be gelling together - especially the batting - and depend on individual feats(like DK's occasional belligerence in a single session) or lower order fight backs.
And the bowling goes AWOL when one, just one opposition batsman digs in and announces that he is not going to give away his wicket(vide the Mumbai loss).
And the bowling is simply not enough to win the tournament, although it is not bad either. They just don't have a single match turning bowler who can snatch victory from the jaws of victory (you read that right, I'd be happy with that forget snatching victory from the jaws of defeat)

On the Babas, yeah, looks like a Mark Waugh vs Steve Waugh comparison, no.
But this rivalry is going to be played not beyond the Ranji Trophy. Baba Aparajith, as I firmly believed, is just another TN apparition cricketer who will never make it big in national colours. He'd do well if he clings on to his Ranji spot to set up a long rivalry/partnership with his brother at Ranji level. (Assuming Indrajith continues to do well, too)
TN need to luck it out to the final and then luck it out further to get Assam or Tripura there, and further luck it out to have Ashwin for the finals. Then, maybe they can reach at least a 10% chance of winning the trophy

Re: Ranji Trophy and Beyond - Domestic Mattai Pandhu viLayAttu
This is a talented team
disagree why else would Siruthai Balaji continue as player/coach
there is a fundamental flaw in how cricket being run in TN,
game hasn't even permeated southwards of Kanchi district
They just have to look towards
Karnatak who have constructed test quality stadiums in Dharwad and another in Mysore(in addition to infosys one)
and quality turf wickets being provided for all age grade cricketers..makes a massive difference for quality cricketers getting through.
given CSK's suspension and impending galtha to his ICC post Seenu maama will have ample free time to set things right

thiruvizhaa nadandhaa dhaanedaa. All your home matches washed out due to rain. Next year your major share will be away. Thus screwing next season also.

so much hype around leggie Ashwin Murukan, surprising that Mahavishnu hasn't don't a feature given that he comes from 'right kind of' family.

TN match on tellly after a long time TN's bowling strategy with a set of dibbly dobblers seems like a exact replica of what
Hollioake employed in Sharjah. Ash's captaincy was on the dot for the most part.
News7 did a feature on Washington Sundar(another fancy named TN cricketer ) straight out of 90s, lanky/left hand bat from TN.
stance looks like mix of WV/Sharath.

Nakli Ashwin's PR team deserves a Khel Ratna for pulling this off.
