After listening to 'vaNNappoongAvanam' song for weeks on repeat in my vehicle, my initial thought was to do a long post on that song and thus get out of the OCD Smile

i.e. one post in a "song of the day" or "repeat worthy song"  and thus get it out of the loop.

However, after watching the video (for the first time) last weekend, recognized that it is part of a long-running TFM tradition - can even be called a "genre" - with IR himself doing a ton of them over the years. Most of them super numbers!

So, songs with such theme will be featured in this thread (and on one of these days, there will be a post among them on the eeramAna rOjAvE song also).

Well - a little bit of irony - I want to start this thread with a non-IR song - that had been playing in my mind non-stop last night Embarassed

This theme of "young lady having mirth / happiness / carefree time PRIOR to getting into life's complex situations such as காதல், கல்யாணம், கத்திரிக்காய் (சமையல்), குடும்பம், குட்டிகள் இன்ன பிற" had been there possibly from the sangam literature Laughing 

We often hear of poems that depict தலைவி & தோழியர் Smile

I'm not going too far back but just to the pre-IR days / 70's when one such song was frequently played on radio. What makes it a very apt choice to showcase this theme is the AFTERMATH that happens in the story. (The girl gets pushed into a horrible / unhappy life of prostitution after that - sex being a favorite theme of the famous director KB).

What more - the song is set to "thakita-thakita" 1-2-3 rhythm, in line with the "thuLLal" situation of such girls. (Of course, #IR_Waltz got used predominantly by Maestro too , in majority of such songs. There had been exceptions and I'll mention as applicable when featuring such songs).

The song I'm talking about is "ஆண்டவனின் தோட்டத்திலே அழகு சிரிக்குது" - MD-ed by V Kumar (and IR played instruments for some songs with him those days) in the melodious voice of PS.

This should be the quintessential song for this category, especially as presented in the flow of the movie Wink  

i.e. without accounting for the flashback (that has an interesting love story). 

If we take that Karthik portion into account, this may not qualify - but the pAdal varigaL / picturization / overall relevance in the context argues for keeping this song in the thread. 

"That's ok, but why pick this first?" - one might ask. 

Nothing specific, I wanted a song by SJ (who perhaps sang most of such numbers). In addition, this one is some kind of a trend-setter in that time period, almost forcing the other directors / producers to follow - have a similar song in a number of movies.

For MR himself, this was the first biggie success in TF field. (He had success in Kannada / Malayalam prior but his TF ventures were so-so. pagaL nilavu was talked about, possibly made some money also but today remembered only for its songs. idhayakkOyil was more of a motherland pictures movie and not a director's one. That way, this was MR's first biggie TF.)

Let me collect here Vaali's pAdal varigaL which are quite apt to the theme of the thread:

There are lines which exactly represent the carefree attitude that generates the thuLLal inbam during this time period of life  - just to pick one "பூவிலங்கு தேவையில்லையே" - straight talks about the freedom (which will eventually go away when the complicated things happen in life).

Unfortunately for the character in the movie, such "taking away the freedom" happens the very same (or next) day Embarassed

A song that showcased that the pre-commitment time period of a girl need not be 100% thuLLal / gym / dance kind only Laughing That it can also be a time of thimir / relaxation etc. if one had the money / richness and contentment.

Someone as rich as this girl having her own private indoor pool in 80's Chennai.

I call this song the most "thimir pidichcha" song - with such imagination as "நான் வானவில்லை வேண்டினால் ஓர் விலை கொடுத்து வாங்குவேன்" Smile  Yet another Vaali concoction!

See the lines and how they showcase the carefree and happy attitude of a rich and sophisticated lady - before any serious commitments in life :

உலா வரும் கனாக்கள் கண்ணிலே

This is also set to "tha-ki-ta / tha-ki-ta" #IR_Waltz albeit not at a rapid pace but a slow, soft, smooth one. Once again in the magical voice of SJ!

While I personally didn't care for the movie (watched only in the internet era and it was very boring), there are people who raved about it when it arrived (and stick to their stand even today) Embarassed However, this picturization is quite nice:

IR talking about the song "Oru poongaavanam" and the raagam (Suddha dhanyaasi?) at the NEPV audio launch - from 10:15 onwards in the video: 



Good movie by MR.  The way he conceived and executed the tussle between two half-brothers and the villain's role in the movie, and the climax were excellent - all enhanced and kicked up several notches by IR's terrific Background score.

This movie and Geetanjali sowed the seeds of his typical romantic pair's amateurishness and cloyingly-sweet and empty conversation between them, in post-1991 MR movies beginning from Rose and the headache still continues!  In both movies mentioned, it was at least palatable and bearable given that MR-kind of a portrayal was fresh, but then later, it became irritable and unpalatable during and after Rose.

IMHO, in my dictionary, this, Vaan megam and Jallantha (Aathaadi ammaadi) complete the 360-degree of rain moods and blues, and remain/will remain the undefeated female rain anthems (or rain-theme songs) EVER in the history of world cinema and world music!  Hail Maestro!

The song is beautifully choreographed and picturized with Revathi ruling the roost in the first two songs and Girija in the third song.

Going back by a decade and hosting a still-very-fresh-sounding Shailaja song - that had the "மூ.ஆ.மு" Sridevi in half-saree (an attire that is becoming extinct I think).

One cannot totally call the character enjoying carefree singleness but "almost" fits our theme. (Actually, it will be quite difficult to get 100% self-woman kind of songs in TF - that most of the time featured romance and upheld the "kAdhal-kalyANam-kaththirkkA" values of average TN houselhold).

The girl finds pleasure in pets / animals / birds and is not too much into other cares of life (even though a mild thrill exists from the attention a rich-but-foolish boy shows to her). The lyrics of Panju exhibit both in a sweet manner :

மலர்களில் ஆடும் இளமை புதுமையே
மனதுக்குள் ஓடும் நினைவு இனிமையே ஹோய்
பருவம் சுகமே பூங்காற்றே நீ பாடு

As one can see, there is a small word play with that "கல்யாண ராகம்" (typical TN country young girl thinking about marriage & the name of the boy being "Kalyanam" intertwined). Regardless, it is a situation of a single woman enjoying nature and having a carefree life at present.

The picturization is funny and amateurish - but the music and Sridevi save it Smile The superb strings in the second interlude - WOW! Of course, this is another #IR_Waltz 1-2-3 number!

Interesting to see two different YTs of the same song each enjoying millions of views.

We are mistaken if the idea of a single-happy-lady is only about dancing in rain and gardens or playing with flowers, animals and birds Laughing 

That would be too much of stereo-typing, right? 

Fortunately for us, IR's TFM is rich with other variants - as he had composed for 1000's of situations and circumstances Smile

Picking another SJ number, this one too #IR_waltz and a very popular hit number during my college days (and sounding very fresh after 3 decades). Here the girl is happy and not into the concerns of life yet (not even kAdhal, as per the setup). She is into arts and made stage-singing a happy career. Not for making a living but perhaps pursuing what she found interesting in life - definitely a luxury for most 80's girls but this one is gifted (i.e. until a boy follows her wherever she sings and finally asks her to be the life partner ; well, in the story there are events that make her life change forever).

An interesting movie (with sad twists and turns) but this song depicts her "happy-single" status very nicely. 

And I especially like the different words for the pallavi that comes between saraNams, with nice picturization by R Sundarrajan! (அன்பே நீயும் எங்கே வந்தாய்? யாரைக் கண்டு இங்கே நின்றாய்? - pAdal varigaL by Muthulingam)

Continuing with the drift i.e. "not-simply-merry-making-dancing-around-yet-carefree-single-woman", an even more interesting song Wink

Some may get shocked and ask "no-no, how can someone with such a difficult past be happy" and I would like to give some reasons for picking this character and song :

- There is nothing called "perfect happiness" in the current world. That way, all the so-called "happy / carefree being single girl" characters that one can find in the movies or real world do have some kind of baggage
- For e.g. the girl in the intro song suffers from parents of limited means / selfish siblings who even steal her food leaving her hungry etc. Likewise the girl character in mounarAgam lives with a terrible flashback. Even the thimir pidichcha "oru poongAvanam" girl possibly suffers from parental neglect / lack of love.
- We're going with the "half-glass-full" approach, i.e. when introduced to us on screen with the particular song, how the girl is depicted
- Of course, the ground rules definitely call for "no ongoing romance / marriage / piLLai kutty / samaiyal / financial issues / major anxieties" and that way "single and carefree" Smile

So, we have Sindhu who can be brought into our thread - a bold single woman, happily going and challenging a famous classical singer on stage and jumping into the limelight! All the while not in any other kind of major difficulty or entanglements in life. (Despite the past that we come to know later in the movie).

Now, the song itself is a gem - another #IR_Waltz, this one by Chithra chEchi (today I found the interlude is a repeat but the fantastic ending compensates for anything that is otherwise lacking compared to a typical IR song).

IR got the pallavi from a folk song and that gives the nice, humble (and thus happy) disposition of the girl (பாடறியேன் படிப்பறியேன் ஏடறியேன் எழுத்தறியேன் தலக்கனமும் எனக்கு இல்ல).

At the same time, she has excellent understanding of the flawed society and makes fun of it (தலய ஆட்டும் புரியாத கூட்டம்).

While challenging the celebrity, she is tactful and appeals to his heart and reasons well (எண்ணியே பாரு எத்தன பேரு, தங்கமே நீயும் தமிழ்ப்பாட்டும் பாடு,  சொன்னது தப்பா? தப்பா?).

Finally, despite all her humility and appealing tone in most part of the song, she asserts her self confidence that is based on solid facts as "ராகத்தில் புதுசு என்னுதப்பா - அம்மியறச்சவ கும்மியடிச்சவ நாட்டுப்பொறத்துல சொன்னதப்பா" Smile

What a strong and lovely character of a woman that the filmmaker presents to us in this song!
(For now, don't worry about what happens afterwards in the movie Laughing )

Like I mentioned in the previous post, every person who is seemingly the happiest - that others possibly envy as "having the best of the world" - is not truly, perfectly happy. 

There are possible causes of serious concern for most people in life (in this case, a debilitating - even life-threatening - illness that we come to know later in the movie). Regardless, when introduced to us in the movie, this girl character is "single and carefree" as depicted by the filmmaker!

Per my observation, even though Revathy had "OhO mEgam vandhadhO" / "vAn mEgam" kind of rain and merriment songs, majority of 80's TN girls / single women were more fancied after Nadhiya Laughing 

She seemed to get characters that picturized fashionable, strong, happy and carefree single girl - who seemed to enjoy the best of life! (While I will not feature non-IR songs in this thread anymore, it should be mentioned that 'panneeril nanaindha pookkaL mella chirikka' depicted the kind of life what every girl WANTED to have - I mean those days).  She was the craze of girls in 80's and they wanted to follow her fashions - the most amusing thing being "நதியா மொய்து கொண்டை" and I would have laughed many times making fun of it Laughing

Well, this song is a thakadhimi-thakajunu number, first of 4/4 kind, for our thread. A very famous song that we've already talked about in many other threads (including the streams-santoor thread). Phenomenal melody and sweet singing by chEchi who made it to the top in TFM with this song (and album). To this day, she is called "chinnakkuyil Chitra" and such is the popularity / impact of the song. 

As for the picturization goes, 100% fit to this thread - no love / romance / family - kind of baggage - single woman enjoying company of neighborhood kids with a lot of fun!

Since Radha has more on-screen presence for IR songs than most other actresses (like Revathy / Sridevi), wanted to host a "happily-single" song for her. Unfortunately, I could not do for "putham puthu kAlai" which should have been the best - BR had chopped it off from the movie.

When I looked around for an alternative, I was surprised that there are not many - as she got typecast in romantic roles most of the time (or masAlA stuff). I tossed "chakkara kattikku" from MTK because it is more of fancying a future marriage (which is somewhat opposite to the theme of this thread). May be we can have it as "appendix" in the end of thread but not in the initial posts.

That's when this song got played in one of my drives and I was wondering if this could be a good fit. When I saw the YT video of the song, it was not promising Embarassed because there is a kid with her. I was wondering if that is hers and she is acting as a mother or divorcee or something like that. (Never watched that movie). Now the painful part - I had to browse thru the movie, watching some scenes to understand the story - and finally decide "it is OK to host this song" Laughing

She is portraying an interesting character in this song - of a "restaurant waitress in Tokyo Japan, of Tamil origin" - who ends up babysitting the hero's child for a day Laughing Well, happy-carefree-single lady! I just watched portion of the movie prior to this song FF-ing most part (horrible and boring).

The song itself is interesting, with lines such as "என்னைப்போல் கன்னிப்பூ" - confirming her status and comparing her to the spring flowers. Interestingly, there's some philosophy there Wink  As observed here in NA (and also told in the movie about these Japanese flowers), those appear everywhere suddenly in spring and are gone within a week or so - max 10 days. The so called "iLamai" is like that - very brief and gone - so enjoy when one has it (likewise the status of "single and carefree" Laughing I'm sure no such girl is looking at this thread or posts - most IRF's, that too those who visit our forum, are possibly not "youththu" but having children or grandchildren).

A song which we've talked about quite a lot (actually I still owe a few posts on this song in the OCD thread ). By today's standards, neither the singing nor the picturization will be considered "மற்றது" but not that way when it arrived. A still photograph of the ladies in swimsuits with Kamal created a lot of noise when published in 1981 for the movie promos Laughing

Well, let us focus on the theme of the thread. Also, the discussion is not about all 3 ladies but only the "heroine" (just for convenience) - the role played by Madhavi. 

As presented in the movie, she is into a career of classical dance and also beauty pageants / fashion shows which were possibly for only 0.1% or less of the girls those days. Such is the privilege for this "poo malarndhida nadamidum pon mayil" girl. 

As seen in this song, life is all about keeping fit / maintaining the shape and practicing / performing the art. With no serious concerns or anxieties related to money / romance or family, she can be what we call "a perfect fit" for the title of this thread. And so, there's nothing surprising about the attitude of the girl as expressed in the pAdal varigaL:

Actually, I considered it but was wondering if this girl is already "mentally locked" (as this song happens AFTER falling in love / Sarath Babu proposing her) and so should we showcase it right now...well, OTOH, this is a much better fit than "OhO mEgam vandhadhO" as the girl does not have any baggage and can be counted carefree!

One more 4/4 for the thread - and the song itself starts with the counting of "1-2-3-4" being a gym / exercise song - not just for the girl but a group of girls Smile

First of all, let me post the pAdal varigaL here - by GA - which are very good, considering how difficult it is to write for such a complicated tune without compromising reasonable poetic standards. (This was not part of the 100 songs I picked for his thread, possibly either because the first two words turned me off or that I didn't even know this was by GA those days.)

Actually, the pAdal varigal could not be found on the net (with whatever standard search tricks I do)  A few lines that are available in one post on the hub is full of errors :

The beautiful phrase the poet wrote as "ஆடிப்பாடி அழகெனது கூடிக்கூடி" is wrongly interpreted as "அழகனுடன் (மம்முட்டியா?) கூடிக் கூடி" rotfl - some appreciation of poetry Laughing

Well, here you have, the excellent poetry by Amar Singh, who probably struggled to come up with words for the mettu and thus inserted "கட்டும் மெட்டுக்கு" in the beginning of the song Smile

I don't have to explain too much about how this song fits into the theme of the thread! As per the movie story line, this is a "flash back" song in which the character played by Mammootty, a talented lawyer who is refusing to take up a case, looks at the picture of this girl in the news item (related to the case), recalls this song and changes his mind - to appeal and appear in court for the convict! Amala played the "gym-dancing-doctor-single-happy-woman" character whom the lawyer reminisces about!

She had been an excellent dancer and made "gym" popular for women in 80's and 90's. (I could not pick the wonderful "rOsAppoo Adi vandhadhu" song for her as that is a romance song with Prabhu and thus does not qualify for the thread - OTOH, this one is a perfect fit).

The music is fantastic (superb brass sections and exotic drum concoctions that only IR is capable of) and the on-screen stuff is not bad at all (actually, good for 1990 standards).

What a lovely, evergreen, haunting number this one is! (The album has a VJ version of this song also - but that one is not for a "single-carefree" lady and won't come in our thread).

Since I didn't know much about the movie's story or the song's situation, quickly browsed thru the youtube to confirm that this one is indeed a "carefree-happy-single" lady's song Smile This is one that sails across the mERkuththodarchchi malaichchAral - like a breeze - of a tribal girl and captures the attention of her father's boss who is travelling to the region for a vacation.

The video quality is horrible (whichever version one can get in the web, including the one inside the movie) - but the setting is definitely quite interesting (i.e. considering the time when it arrived):

While there is some yearning about the girl's future thalaivan (which was pretty much part of many sangam poems as well), the girl at present has no big anxieties about it but is happily enjoying the nature, being herself!

I need not talk much about IR's fantastic strings score for this song (and also the other accompaniments with flute and santoor) or the phenomenal singing by SJ. I believe they had to use some imagination and tricks those days to get the "overlap" in the end - with not much hi-tech available to create such effects easily - but the result was awesome as we used to simply love that portion!  (Personally I didn't get any eeriness but some others in those days fell for "mohini" tricks and such Laughing )

This song introduces a very happy single woman singing and dancing in rains. Interesting to see that Maniratnam was almost "under pressure" to have a song of this kind after he started the trend a few years before with mouna rAgam. 

Girija acted as this happy girl (who later in the story is identified to have a serious illness, much like poovE poochchooda vA). Nothing much happens on-screen during this song (i.e. by way of story or anything like that) - the simple merrymaking of a young girl in nature. I had seen another movie of her in Malayalam - vandhanam with Mohanlal, Priyadharshan movie and possibly a similar thuLLal song in that also.

Sweet #IR_Waltz - thuLLal nadai with his signature rhythm arrangements and racy melody - originally done for the Telugu movie "geethAnjali". Though a "dubbing" song, Vaali had no burden of "lip sync" business - as this song is mostly don't care (almost montage kind) song and had to simply write a "மெட்டுக்குப்பாட்டு". Almost all lyricists who worked with IR should have been masters in this method anyways Smile
