"The song is backed by a synth rhythm that never changes but Ilaiyaraaja weaves his magic with the tune especially the charanams. When I heard the song for the first time, it immediately reminded me of Pon Mane Kobam Yeno but I think it could because of the Raaga it’s based on (charanam) but the starting of the song sounds like Kaapi.

Listen to the song on a good headphones, you can identify those strings in the background in the charanam. Another gem that you might want to add to your list."

I have always smiled when I listen to the Ghatam at the start that takes you into the song.
The ghatam makes its re-entry in the first interlude with violins and cellos, the song is backed by western percussion (probably pads)but it sounds as if our villages have been using that forever. The strings section (Celtic violin from the Hungarian musicians I think) completes the ensemble and they intercept the charanam beautifully."

Well curated too.  Love how Pattu Inge segues into Ennaku Tha.  Loved that they included Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa.  Felt Poomalai from the same film - Thanga Mahan - should have been in there too but overall a brilliant selection, going beyond cliche choices.  On that note, Hey Maina is a great selection, love the Jean Luc Ponty like solo violin section in the prelude.

"Whenever I listen to the song, I always enjoy the use of mandolin in the entiretly of the song . Mandolin feature prominently in the pallavi, interludes and in the background as it accenutates the rhythm in the front. It’s an absolute bliss to listen to the way mandolin and flute is juxtaposed in the interludes. The song is backed by tabla and triangle in the background. You can also hear the bass guitar in the background and occasionally classical guitar makes it presence felt."
