Well, there are many threads in TFMpage that had discussed about KVM - historically, musically, lyrically etc.

This is my masAlA thread - documenting his phenomenal hits (with details / lyrics / youtubes etc wherever possible)!

Of course, the thread will have my "expert comments" from time to time

#1 நலந்தானா (nalandhAnA of thillAnA mOhanAmbAL)

Perhaps one of my most fav songs of KVM - with that lovely nAyanam by MPM Sethuraman / MPM Ponnusamy brothers

The song also had terrific visuals (an out-of-shape Padmini with nice facial expressions to meet the eyes of the sokka vaikkum NT).

Phenomenal song!

As in the case of GA thread, this will be in "free-form"  (means, no other parameters such as chornological order, hero-wise catalog etc).

This will be purely masAlA, catching hits composed by KVM (well, melody part - he had to have Pugazhendhi doing orch part almost all the time)!

Marudhakaasi's thought provoking lyrics, outdoor visuals (very rare for that time especially in a song) with NT's performance, perfect folk tune, young and bold TMS voice and singing, everything is so right about this song; maNappaRai maadu katti from makkaLaip petRa magaraasi

Any thread on KVM is incomplete without the entire album of Thiruvarutchelvar. Let me plug my all time favorite old-is-gold song. Mannavan Vandhaanadi Thozhi. In terms of classical depth in tunesmithing, few come close to KVM in IFM.



Kannadasan's lines throughout are impressive. Especially where he takes out each swara and expands on it to give rise to content and KVM's tune over them. This song is something else.

As in most cases of KVM-light, the orch is average (interludes repeat etc, so strictly below-average) but that does not hurt the overall experience

Quite in contrast to that of his mammoth classical efforts in several songs KVM had also composed  a lot of delectable lighter melodies that have acquired classic status over time.

Each of the following deserves detailed discussion

1. gnyaayiru enbadhu kannaaga - SPB's most favourite TMS-PS duet

2. unnai kaNaadha kaNNUm &  malargaL nanaindhana paniyaale from that awesome soundtrack Idhayakamalam

3. Kannedhire thondrinaaL from iruvar ULLam

4. thokkaNaang kuruvikoodu - Vaanambaadi  -folkish tune, another genre where he excelled

5. solla solla inikudhuda murugaa - melodies don't get sweeter than this

6. aayiram nilave vaa - SPB's earliest hit from adimai peNN

7. oruthi oruvanai ninaithuvittal- saaradha - aah! what a song. 

8. paarthen sirithen-abhimanyu- benchmark still for sahana usage in TFM, even though it is light enough for a layman to hum along. That's one of his strengths.

9. amudhum thenum edharkku - seergazhi, one of a kind,would have just loved rendering this

10. gangaikarai thottam

11. thoongaadha kann endru and mayakkam enadhu thaaygam from Kungumam -awesome writing and songs

and many more...

His classical songs of course will merit a separate thread all by themselves. The 60s generation were blessed to have been treated to such varied and rich fare alternatively  by MSV and KVM.


Some of the so-called composers of TFM today
would do well to learn from him the art of tuning to pre-written lyrics while adhering to the mood/situation the song demanded. KVM,more than most other composers always preferred tuning to pre-written lyrics rarely changing a word here or there and yet the result doesn't look labored at all.

#7 சித்தாடை கட்டிக்கிட்டு (வண்ணக்கிளி)

This whole album is a riot. Personally, most songs are NOT favourites but this was one album I couldn't ignore as a HCIRF during 70s & 80s  That was because, this one was a patti-thotti-often-played-album, rivalling ANY of IR's hits (or TR's famous albums).

That too despite not having ANY big name associated with it (main char of the movie got played by RS Manohar who later came to be known as nAdagakkAvalar, thanks to his innovations at stage plays). Otherwise zero glitterati. The Malayalam hero Prem Nazir had acted in this and the titles show some 7-8 actors in the list on a single slide, with none getting any prominence

While the movie titles clearly mention KVM, they fail to include the lyricist (not even listed ).

Going by some blogs, it was Maruthakasi (who also did the famous maNappARai mAdu katti).

I'm going to catalog all the songs of this movie that were huge hits during my school / college days, even though the movie came much earlier. Such popularity of songs from a non-MGR / non-Sivaji movie was unprecedented per my observation. Going by the special place in title card, I guess KVM was much regarded by public at the time of release of this "modern theaters" movie!

#8 சின்னப்பாப்பா எங்க செல்லப்பாப்பா (வண்ணக்கிளி)

What a song!

Perhaps one of the most "used" song in daily lives of TN parents In our family, two generations have already used this in making babies sleep and I'm sure more will follow in future.

KVM-PS combo did a terrific job in this. As in case of the previous song, the titles don't show the lyricist but based on web resources I'm guessing this one too got penned by Maruthakasi.

The song is not only a soothing thAlAttu but also a kind of 'varalAtRu AvaNam' of TN - in the sense it documents some common interests for children during those years, such as சீனி மிட்டாய், சிலுக்குச் சட்டை, சீனா பொம்மை, கண்ணாமூச்சி ஆட்டம், கொய்யாப்பழம் ! I guess some of these are already "history" and others will become so in course of time

In any case, while listening to the song is quite an emotional experience (for me), the visuals are somewhat turn-off....though not as bad as many others :

#9 அடிக்கிற கை தான் அணைக்கும் (வண்ணக்கிளி)

A third super-hit song from that album is one of the most recognized "drink" songs of TFM history

Regarded by some historians as the first "male playback singer of TFM", Tiruchy Loganathan croons in this number as the drunkard, with PS providing the sweetness quotient.

The percussion instrument sound that ends the saraNam is one of my all-time-fav sounds in TFM!

The drunk fellow's thaththuvams are nicely penned by Maruthakasi. 

Of course, some of these lines have been re-used by TN-ers millions of times over the years, in a variety of contexts
(Some are deadly...For e.g. the context in which the first line of second saraNam - "இறைக்கிற ஊற்றே சுரக்கும்" - got used in college hostels is not possible to post here  )

Possible inspiration for "thodangum bOdhu mudiyum, nee mudiyum bOdhu thodangum"?  coming from another drunk guy dancing i.e.

#10 காட்டு மல்லி பூத்திருக்க (வண்ணக்கிளி)

I'm not sure if many city-dwellers are aware of the existence of this song. However, this is easily one of the super-hit songs during 70's-80's in small towns, villages, buses, occasions, festivals etc as per my experience. That is, despite the movie being a 1959 release !

One of the plus points of the film is its melodious music (composer K. V. Mahadevan; lyrics Marudhakasi). Many songs became hits and continue to be popular even today. Those include ‘Kaattumalli poothirukka' (voice: Seergazhi Govindarajan) and ‘Adikkira kai thaan anaikkum' (voices: Tiruchi Loganathan and P. Once again Maruthakasi's earthy lines went well with village people and Seerkazhi's kural is a perfect match too. KVM repeats the interlude but the uRumi mELa sound is a lovely accompaniment to the "மாட்டுக்கார வேலா ஒன் மாட்டக் கொஞ்சம் பாத்துக்கடா" line

I wonder if this song was behind MGR naming his movie as 'mAttukkAra vElan' (and also Kamalahasan naming his kattavaNdi kattavaNdi character as vElan).

Malayalam star Prem Nazir (who had the record # of movies among heroes at one poiint) is on screen for this song.

Another superb song from the same movie / album! This one is a sweet favourite

PS / Seerkazhi duet, once again by Maruthakasi with some lovely lines!

Good experience!

Based on Nerd's tweets, it appears 'vaNdi uruNdOda' is not that much popular beyond 80's - especially not in the TV sagA.

However, the song used to get featured on wall posters during 70's & 80's when the movie still had re-screening on lottu-lodukku-touring kind of theaters in towns where I visited (that too pretty often).

And most of those posters also featured the  caption as "inimaiyAna pAdalkaL niRaintha padam" (much like "iLayarAjAvin innisai mazhaiyil" advertisement by Motherland pictures  )

Actually, I've even heard the 'Aththula thaNNi vara athiloruvan meen pidikka...adi kaNNammA' song sung by Seerkazhi from this movie quite often those days.

Point to be noted : At this point of time, i.e. 1959, the screen titles do not show Pugazhendhi.

During my school / college days, there was not one light music program that I attended that didn't have either siththAdai kattikkittu or this song. Also, most functions where they loudspeakered the siththAdai song, they also did mAmA mAmA mAmA. I used to even think that both belonged to the same movie those days. 

This is once again a KVM-top-star kind of movie IMO. Another "Modern theaters" production with no MGR-Sivaji. 

Of course, it had M R Radha (this song too features him) and that way there was indeed a big star for this movie, thus taking away some of the KVM credit. Still, the fact that the song outlived the 60's and continued to be a patti-thotti CURRENT playlist in 70's / 80's (when M R Radha is considered to be more a villain than a hero by the public in general, i.e. after "bulletting" MGR) should earn a lot of credits for the MD!

To be honest, I wasn't very happy those days when these songs (or engE nimmadhi) got regularly featured in light music programs, taking away some of the limelight of IR songs  Not that I dislike these songs - I can hear them once / twice in a while but not as the "current" mainstay

Anyways, looking back, if these are numbers worthy to last long in the minds of generations, I should acknowledge the greatness of the songs - regardless of my own personal preference

The pAdal varigaL are quite an interesting conversation between the girl and boy (Maruthakasi again, he did have a great command on the folk lingo of the time period) :

Sureshji tweeted that the Telugu song too was a super hit, though the movie in which it got featured was perhaps not a remake of Kumudam.

(BTW, I've corrected above the date of Kumudam as 1961, and not 62).

The 1962 Telugu movie Manchi Manasulu featured the mAmA song and the movie was a big hit as well. As one can see from the wiki page, KVM is considered quite instrumental for the popularity of the movie

BTW, I should post a (minor) correction on Kumudam.

The movie had another star of that time period - S S Rajendran - besides M R Radha and we'll see some of the songs featuring him in the coming days  

That the 'latchiya nadigar' had passed away only recently should have alerted me - but I didn't know much about this kumudam movie except the songs...googling today gave me a lot of data on the movie...
