The last vinyl cover we have for 1988 (i.e. for now)...sakkarai pandhal (directed by GA it seems, another "Saranraj" movie)

1989 was an outrageous year for rAsA - a year of biggy biggies...

Let's start with the one where he shared top honors (as the hero or director cannot be called top stars in their own might...actually Goundamani / Senthil combo can also compete for the main spot in the success story )

All songs except the autobiography ('pAttAlE budhdhi sonnAr') were written by GA...

Then we had 'aboorva sagOdharargaL' with 3 Kamals - one of the biggest successes in the glittering career of Kamal...Appu still regarded as one of his finest performances!

All songs written by Vaali & some exceptional singing by SPB in this album!

rAjAthi rAjA - family production by rAsA & had Rajinikanth in dual role (with Radha & Nadhiya)...I believe the movie was made in remarkably short time and became a big success...directed by R Sundarrajan.

The agni natchaththiram song (rAjAdhi rAjan indha rAjA) is played as an interlude in one of the songs, what a nice (self) tribute to the maestro

Fazil's varusham-16 was a huge hit (both music & movie), Karthik-Kushbu...

poo pookkum mAsam thai mAsam, pazhamudhirchchOlai, gangaikkarai mannanadi, karaiyAtha manamum uNdO...what a treasure of an album!

Unfortunately, the vinyl does not list the pAdal Asiriyar(kaL)

Rajini had another hit, mAppiLLai, with Amala. (I've mentioned before that I slept in the theater for a good part of this movie So don't remember much about the story / song sequences etc. Even missed writing about one SPB hit in the IR-SPB thread that surprised some.

Recently they remade it with Dhanush and failed I think)

Kamal-Pratap-Prabhu combo's "Bourne" style movie, vetri vizhA had terrific songs and all were hits

Then there was this Nagarjuna-Girija movie Geethanjali dubbed into Thamizh as 'idhayaththai thirudAdhEy"

Mani Rathnam the director & Vaalee the lyricist. (Many times discussed how the Telugu originals that had SPB were awesome and Thamizh dubbed ones with Mano lack that kick...still, IMHO, those were the best ones in Mano's career...)

There are two vinyl covers that carry KB's pic in this year. The first one as producer and Rajini playing benefit match

Siva (sumAr album, I couldn't watch the dvd beyond 10-15 min)

The next one as director - his last one with IR - pudhuppudhu arththangaL..

Per thiraippadal, rAsA composed for four Vijayakanth movies in 1989 (ponmanachchelvan, poRuththadhu pOdhum, pAttukkoru thalaivan & dharamam vellum). musicalaya has two of those vinyl covers...

The famous one, from my PoV, pAttukkoru thalaivan (azhagiya nadhiyena / ninaiththadhu yArO) :

Ramarajan acted in a few movies other than karagam in this year 1989 and most had rAsA music.

Then there was this ennap peththa rAsA (one loses count as to how many 'rAsA' movies this fellow had done )





Then there is this "anbukkattaLai"...

Sathyaraj too was pretty busy churning out such low-bud movies during this time period.

Some had really nice songs, for e.g. this vAthiyAr veettuppiLLai with some sweet SPB numbers!





Then the "pick pocket" movie, which had a nice SPB number too...





And the 'chinnappa dAs' movie which got named after the kadalOrakkavidhagaL hero name...

We have three more vinyl covers from this year at musicalaya...let's finish them...

The GA directed movie 'aNNanukku jAy' had Arjun...

It seems there's another 'pAsa' movie by the DMK group featuring Radhika...

"pAsa mazhai" produced by murasoli Selvam...

The last one - thiruppu munai of Karthik - a cassette that irritated me when I got it (not even one number I liked then).

With that the glorious 80's are done - i.e. all the vinyl covers that are readily available at musicalaya for the primary rAsA erA are posted here!

We need to appreciate one historical development - that, by this time, vinyls were dying and "company cassettes" were already the norm. The "recording centers" were on the verge of ending their dream run too. Company cassettes were the main biz for the first half of 90's and CDs during the later half of 90's...

I've personally watched the flooding of cassette players in the Indian market during the later part of 80's. A couple of my classmates / collegemates were in the audio industry, designing / building / tooling / manufacturing the deck mechanisms & their production lines for mass manufacture (as also the external plastics and other mech components).

My bachelor room-mate friend was in the manufacturing / testing of the electronics of audio systems and a huge factory was churning out 1000's of audios each day in my town (by a company from the same electronics group I worked for and they had a huge share of the market and gave tough competition to Philips then).

Quite often my room mate used to take some of my cassettes for use in their "production line" for testing...and thru this "channel" a lot of people at factory got introduced to NBW & Paul Mauriat stuff

A few years later, the head of that factory became by neighbor (ethir veedu) and was also the peer to my boss (who headed the telecom factory) and I had a decent idea of the market & trends for such stuff in the country then.

The background information above is to inform that this thread is nearing its end very soon There are not many vinyls going to be around at musicalaya, for those high-productive-early-90's of rAsA

Regardless, I'll share whatever vinyl covers are available on that site.

Looks like I missed Indiran Chandiran in 1989...or, may be I'm ok to include in 1990 as the timing as to when the Thamizh got released isn't very clear. (wiki says the Telugu original is a 1989-er)...

So, here is the 'kAdhal rAgamum kanniththamizhum onRu sErndhadhu pOl' - what a lovely, lovely song in this album!

Kamal had the awesome MMKR in 1990 - movie & songs need no intro

Fazil's arangEtRa vELai was a decent hit I think. (It was a remake of 'rAmjirAo speaking' Malayalam movie produced by him)...
