The 'high life': In our series on beautiful places around the world, here's a shot of life at Ronda, Spain, 750 metres above sea level! This city, which was settled in 6th century BC, is perched right over a 100 m deep, steep canyon, El Tajo. (Photo courtesy: Amazing places around the world)

RARE SHOT: Even an invisible, odourless gas can be photographed. These are bubbles of methane, captured by photographer Mark Thiessen, when he took a shot of the first clear ice in an Alaskan lake. (Photo courtesy: National Geographic Magazine)

Cold Treatment?

With only 2,424 beds, 750 faculty members and 35 operation theatres including the ones at AIIMS Trauma Centre the number of patients far overrides the available facilities.

Worth A Dekko: CUBIC WATERMELON from Japan!

In Japan, farmers of the Zentsuji region found a way to grow cubic watermelons, by growing the fruits in glass boxes and letting them naturally assume the shape of the receptacle.
The cubic shape was originally designed to make the melons easier to stack and store, but the cubic watermelons are often more than double the price of normal ones, and much of their appeal to consumers is in their novelty.

Do you know what this is? It is called the 'Glory Drain Hole'. Glory holes are used to drain excess water during dry seasons in dams. This is the largest one of them all in the world, located in Lake Berryessa. It is used very rarely, but is quite the sight to see it being put to use. Located in Napa County, California, this glory hole was constructed between 1953 and 1957. The hole diameter is 72ft (22m) wide whilst the critical drop is 280ft (86m).

Pick of the Bunch: Panjin Red Beach, China
This striking 'beach' in the Liaohe River delta (China) gets its distinct colour from 6,000 acres of red grass

DID YOU KNOW? Horace Burgess (in Tennessee) built a tree house, with a whopping 1,000 square meters (nearly 11,000 square feet) and standing 90 feet tall! It took fifteen years.

Maverick’s

Every year, 24 surfers from around the world wait to hear that the Maverick’s surf contest is on. What makes the contest special is the 15m waves that roar down to Northern California from the Gulf of Alaska to give professional surfers the ride of their life. The surf area, consistently known to be one of the most dangerous in the world, exists due to very specific sea-floor topography, or bathymetry. A long “ramp” of decreasing depth leads up to the area where the big waves break, just North of Half Moon Bay, California. Wave energy through the deeper areas on either side of this “ramp” then collapse into a very small, shallow area, creating the enormous waves that occur at Maverick’s. The wave energy that converges on the area is coupled with a very shallow reef and only sca
rce breaks in waves, creating very dangerous conditions for surfers and boaters alike.

Bathymetry is one factor that contributes to wave breaks along coastlines around the world. Additionally, wind velocity also contributes to wave motion, so Maverick's surf contest occurs in the winter months in California.

For the 2012/2013 surf season, the Maverick’s contest will occur between now and March 31st, and competitors will have as few as 24 hours’ notice in which to find their way to California from around the world to compete.

Maverick’s is one of many “big wave” areas in the surf world, each with different topographical and geographical distinctions that create their big wave qualities. These areas, though fascinating and beautiful, are quite dangerous, and are best experienced from a place of safety.

Over the years NASA have shared with us many images of our home planet. Here are six of the best:

The top left image is the iconic "Blue Marble" which was taken during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. It is one of the most published images of all time and spurred a new environmental movement.

The top centre image, also entitled "Blue Marble" was taken in 2002. It was the most detailed true-color image of the Earth’s surface ever produced. Using data from NASA’s Terra satellite, scientists and data visualizers stitched together four months of observations of the land surface, coastal oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, photo-like mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet.

The top right image is called the Aqua Marble. Like the 2002 blue marble images, it is a mosaic of satellite data taken mostly from a NASA sensor called the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) that flies board NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites. It provides a full year’s worth of monthly observations with twice the level of detail as the original.

The bottom left image came some forty years after the original Blue Marble image in 1972. It was provided by the newly launched Suomi NPP satellite. Using modern, high resolution, photographic equipment on the satellite. But unlike the 1972 image the 2012 Blue Marble is not a photograph. 2012′s Blue Marble is a mosaic of hundreds of individual images taken by Suomi NPP as it orbits the Earth.

The bottom centre image is “The White Marble”. It was constructed using images from the Suomi NPP satellite. It shows the Earth from above the Arctic. It appears as a mass of white due to the icecaps and the surrounding swirls of clouds. Asia, Europe and Northern Africa are still visible towards the centre.

The bottom right image is the newest images from NASA called the "Black Marble". It was also constructed using the Suomi NPP satellite equipped with a new sensor aboard which allows scientists now can observe Earth's atmosphere and surface during nighttime hours. The new sensor, the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), is sensitive enough to detect the nocturnal glow produced by Earth's atmosphere and the light from a single ship in the sea.

Which image is your favourite?
