RIP Balamuralikrishna
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/Carnatic-musician-Balamuralikrishna-passes-away/article16675506.ece
Multi-Instrumentalist (there's a video of his on YT where he plays the Mridangam, Kanjira and Viola!), needless to say, singer with outstanding range (could scale 6 octaves), composer (has won the National Award for Best Music Director and Best Playback Singer (his music), not to mention the several ragas he has discovered and composed krithis in), கலங்கரை விளக்கம், as Mottai likes to call it, for South Indian Music.
Huge, huge loss. He has accepted the invitation of Chinna Kannan to the heavenly abode.

Re: RIP Balamuralikrishna
This is very sad I had a privilege to attend his concert couple of years ago. He was at his very best even then. Inimitable, sweet, manly, flawless voice. It is indeed a huge loss to music.

Re: RIP Balamuralikrishna
KVM , MSV, Ilayaraja, Raveendran - what do they all have in common other than being film composers?
They all consulted one man - Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna.
To live as an authority in the complex world of CCM for such a long time is no easy task. Legends like him will be in listener's mind for decades as part of their fine tastes. More importantly, his life's work will remain as reference to all CCM researchers for centuries. Case in point is his album Raga vaibhavam illustrating all the 72 nelakartha ragams and a few Janyas. Not many artists have navigated the ocean as much as him.
May his soul rest in peace. On this occasion , I recall one of my all time film music favorites - Thangaratham vandhadhu from kalai kovil..

Re: RIP Balamuralikrishna
Came to understand from Rajendra Kumar's FB post that Kangalukkul Unnai Ezhudhu is based on Lavangi, the raga composed by BMK
I remember CK getting excited and mentioning his musician friend was also baffled with the tune. The raga has only 4 swaras or notes. To compose such a cascading and complex melody in a recent raga created by another master is quite simply up the level of Maestro.

Not aware of any song other than this in cinema.
Landed on this blog post from 2008 by Rajendra Kumar:

And also landed on the answer to why the shift from interlude to charanam 1 was haunting CK and me. He does a graha bedham there from Lavangi to Mandhaari. The trumpet lands at Ri and he keeps that as Sa and lanuches Janaki into the graha bedham. Pure genius.

Great analysis there! Pulling up the song right now for yet another listen. What a composition indeed and how fitting that it was a Balamuralikrishna raga!
