No offence to IR (or those who like the songs that will be featured here by anyone).

Wondered whether there should be a place like this or not but then concluded, like, "இங்கே சொல்லாட்டி வேறே எங்க சொல்ல?" Embarassed

So, let us vent out any such songs (though there may not be many, there are some and I encountered one today).

சிட்டு பறக்குது குத்தாலத்துல from nilavE mugham kAttu.

As part of some collection, this happened to be in the van's HDD and whenever it started I used to get irritated and skip.

Today, I thought, let me listen to this objectively in total. With patience, to identify ANYTHING IR I can relate to Embarassed

Not once, but listened to it twice.

What a horror Sad

Nothing - nothing worked for me. So, there are even songs like this that got IR tag!

The funniest thing is, the youtube has a lakh+ hits Shocked

i like this song year. sangar mahadevan and sujatha chechi.. really nice..
no need to be particularly harsh on this one.. Feels extra bad because it marks the decline
of IR and kalanjiyam combo..
same movie had the awesome 'thendralai kandu koLLa'///

sittu parakkudhu is a classic compared to some of the eardrumbusters I have heard from IR in the 80s itself. I cannot list those songs because they escape your memory quickly most of the time and thankfully so. Atleast sittu parakkudhu had a pair of decent singers and a not-so-bad rhythm arrangement.

But if you want to make a list start from the late 90s, when you had to wade through a pile of garbage in order to retrieve a gem. I remember vaguely some soundtracks like Thodarum, Rajasthan, kumbakonam gopalu etc. that had some horrid songs. Atleast in the 80s, the interludes could salvage some songs, even if the tune or the singing was rank bad.No such respite here. Like I said earlier those were truly dark ages for TFM-IR fans.

thamizh became a secondary consideration and malayalam became mother tongue :-)

He entertained every director, but became stingy when the director himself took script+music for granted..
In malayalam he gave beautiful gems in the same period as the engagement of the directors there was much better..

For me, there are plenty of such songs. Random pick: The song Apna Josh from the private album "Meri Jaan Hindustan". And I was listening to this in late 90s, without having listened to a lot of his not-so-great 90s music.. So in a way, I was listening to this song directly after worshiping all his 80s music and for once, I confess, it did shake the foundation of the respect I have built for him all along.

Compared to songs like these - that Nilave Mugam Kaattu is trademark raaja, at least in the tune (particularly the charanams).

I was about to post that the charanam of "sittu paRakkudhu" is indeed intricate and overall it is a decent folk melody in Keeravani. What turned me off was those chorus.

The early millennium albums like Devan, Kaasi, Solla marandha kadhai, mayakkaNNAdi manasellAm were simply unbearable. with a heavy heart I resigned to the fact cruel age had caught up with Raja too as it did for past masters like MSV,  till few Carnatic raga based songs from ULiyin Oasai came along. I started looking forward to his songs again.

@app sir - pl. define 'unpalatable' :-) I think this is a nice fun song. The fact that he switches out the dance rhythm in the charanams is an indicator that he is trying to give us a melody. He leaves his counterpoint signature in the first interlude as well. I find the even the 'simplest' or 'boring'  or an unknown song of IR to have high quality 'fit and finish' compared to other MDs. Try listening to any folks type songs they make these days (courtery of Tentkotta) , the orchestration is not at all smooth. There is a reason the guy who can write 3 part harmonies or write music for a full-fledged orchestra will deign to do a simple folk dance or katha kaalathchabam - he is confident about the quality of his work (ask the modern MDs like Rahman to do a folk or classic, they always resort to some modern beat or effects or something because they cannot stand on pure tune/simple rhythms).

Ruku ruku roop kya or whatever are the lyrics...the song from Friends.  It's not such a bad song per se but it's just so dull.  Boring instrumentation and even the singing is flat and lacklustre.  Even in his 'kutthu' paatu songs from 80s, there would be something interesting in the orchestration to help listeners get through the ride e.g Anaatha Aaduran from Aboorva Sagotharargal.  There's nothing in Ruku ruku, but I believe it was a hit?  What I found unpalatable precisely about the song was that silly "Hua hua" chorus between lines in the charanam.  I was like, why's he doing this.

Since it is difficult to remember bad songs from obscure films for most of us I thought a better variant to this thread might be songs from either well known film/actors/banners or from films where you expected a great score from IR because of the premise and were let down in either case.

Some noteworthy inclusions in this list:

1. Kalaiganan- endhan nenjil neegadha was good, and kokkarkko was'nt too bad. But I just couldn't stand the kalaignan kattukkaaval song by SPB. Felt like as if SPB was reading out his lines. Not much of a tune anywhere. Even peppy/kuthu songs have to get their melody lines right. This one didn't and badly so.

2. Magalir mattum-Kamal was involved, a Rajkamal productions I think. You expected something sensational as always. What you got instead was moththu moththunnu moththanum in an ageing/annoying SJ's voice.

3. MogamuLL- not a bad soundtrack overall. But a movie based on  a respected novelist's work which had scope for some good classical music. And then you have that Arunmozhi singing nenje  gurunaadhanin and spoiling it for me. avar dhaan kedachaara andha paatta paada? Song itself wasn't anything great.

4. Pattu vaadhiyar- with a title like that and coming in the early part of the 90s with about half a dozen songs, I expected atleast a couple of classics. But a total letdown.

5. Kaasi - Hariharan singing all songs for IR. You thought at least a couple of them would be up there even if Hari might mess up the folkish tunes a bit. But none of the songs wowed me. And a few annoyed me. Songs like rokkam irukkira makkal, maanu tholu and all that could have been given to Arunmozhi instead. He might have at least sounded like a rustic guy.

^^^  I think Yettaka Puttakana kannaku (Indrajith) is even more annoying.  It's just a very generic desi Def Leppard wannabe song.  Again very lacklustre orchestration.  At least the sad section in the title track shores up things a bit.  Yenthan Nenjil was all round great, Dilbar Jaane had some very nice orchestration, esp the second interlude and Kokarrako was pretty stylish and funky, would have been even better had he not entrusted Kamal with that song.  I don't deny that Kamal's own singing voice obviously suits him (duh) but standalone the song would have worked better with a more contemporary singer.  By late 90s he was more open to trying singers like Devan or Thipu but at that time he seemingly wouldn't touch the likes of Suresh Peters or Shahul Hameed with a bargepole.
