I am in total agreement with Usha. Balabarathi understands harmony, WCM very well. In the 90s, he did Amaravathy which had some great music. Listen to the orchestration of Taj Mahal thevaiillai...

For a layman like me, this song seems to have a strong influence of Aananda Raagam from Panneer Pushpangal.

When I was young I mistook this following song for IR.

For a long long time, I thought Then sinthuthe Vaanam was by IR. I think IR was helping G.K.V to orchestra so not surprised by IR touch in orchestration. But even tune seems IRish(which many have noted), only inference I could make is, G.K.V must have influenced IR.

Usha .. neengaL phd vaanga thayaar aagivitteergaL :-) Seriously, I think your theories are surely matured. The 'gaps' you mentioned earlier seem to be the best technique to identify the other MDs. Looks like since IR is writing the orchestration down, he completely 'fills' up the gaps. So I am guessing the main tune is not notated completely and it must the chord progression is written down and he keeps adding more 'parts'. Somebody knowledgeable should confirm this.
Re: Bala Bharathy - I think our people are not at all receptive to harmony. They just need a tune and some new rhythm arrangements. More over, he is not much differentiated from IR so there must be some identity issues.

This is an example of a song mistaken by me initially as an IR song, realizing later that this was actually composed by GA, only to be informed by GA himself that the composer for this song alone in that soundtrack was indeed IR :-)

There was this guy Balabharahi in the early 90s who probably made the best imitations of IR's style at that time(better than even Deva). Two songs of his that I liked and could have mistaken them for IR's style were tajmahal thevai illai anname anname and puththam pudhu malare

Even to this day, I can't accept the fact that GA scored CTPT. I know he mentioned that only one song was scored by IR but even the other songs feel way over GA's skill level. For instance, one of my favorite songs from that film is "Maaman ponnukku". The incredible tightness of that song can only be done by IR. The fast rhythm (the song doesn't let go at all), the flowing interludes, the intricacies of the arrangement, the tune progression of the charanam (MV gets stretched to the max)...there is no way I'm accepting that this was a GA creation.

Nice to read this old threads Some of the songs posted here (particularly some of Deva's early work) sounded similar to IR (to me).
