A really nice thread and thanks for all the playlists so far. I was going to request the thalattu songs playlist and was glad to see that started already. I have the following songs in my thalattu playlist but felt there are way more songs than this from IR.

Yamunai Aatrile - Thalapathi (my wife used to sing this to my daughter to make her sleep, not sure if it really falls into the thalattu category, however its a really soothing song)

This topic of ThAlAttu pAdalgaL again raises the interesting question of importance of pAdal varigaL. I think we can safely say that for the objects of the ThAlAttu, lyrics are inconsequential.  .  So, I have a couple of non-mainstream choices for thAlAtu in this list. My parents tell me that I used to sleep blissfully upon hearing Nilaave vaa and Thendral vandhu ennai thodum. I was apparently a big fan of the "Nila" word in general.  . Both parents were big IR fans, though dad also equally loved MSV. My mom was/is IR-SPB crazy to this day. Abiding memories of early childhood (ages 3-5, whatever little I remember) are these two songs constantly playing in the tape recorder on my demand. When I grew up I was mildly shocked to note that the lyrics of thendral vandhu ennaii thodum were strictly PG-13 and anything but ThAlAttu, or at least a very different kind of ThAlAttu

Can somebody give a concrete definition of "Thaalaattu" and quote with examples what kind of songs can fall into this genre and what should not ?

Fring said that Thendral Vandhu is a Thaalaattu song based on his childhood experience because it put him to sleep which is reason enough but should we include it as part of the list considering the lyrics ? What are the factors which decide a song under this genre - is it the lyrics or feel of the song or children being part or emotional content or a combination of various factors ?

Basic definition of 'thAlAttu' is quite simple - lullaby (A quiet, gentle song sung to put a child / someone to sleep)

That way, most songs with 'ArArO, thAlAlO, lAlee' kinds, regardless of whether they're soothing or not, will automatically fall under this category

(Recently Mano & UK sang an ARR number which gObi claimed as thAlAttu comparable to 'O pApA lAlee' because Vaali wrote both - the way those two sang that song which is unfamiliar to me made me feel 'chEh, idhu oppAri not thAlAttu' )

So, basically, it should put someone to sleep (soothing or boring doesn't matter)
OTOH, it should not (try to) wake one up (oppAri)

I see quite a few songs like "thEnil Adum rOjA"."manjaL veyyil","vAdA en rAjA kaNNA" which are meant for playing with kids , but equated to thAllAttu here.
Please confirm if "poovE iLam poovE podhigai malai..." from the movie some Rasigan  (Blame my bad memory!!! ) can be included. Hope I have given out the needed key words for pundits to figure out what song I mean. I can sing almost the entire tune of this SJ solo song. Nalini puts her kid to sleep while the psycho Mohan is lurking in the dark outside the house...
