This is the last of the albums for 1984 on this thread and rAsA has treated the movie (obviously undeservingly) with some terrrrific numbers! Well, these songs are often talked about in forums as to their greatness, deservingly! Me myself would have posted about them from time to time and am only too happy to share them once again in this thread!

Like I mentioned when talking about 'unnai nAn sandhiththEn' movie, rAsA had a taste for KJY-VJ combo at this point of time, giving them some beatsy numbers and this one is among them. In this song, I love the brief piano indulgence in the 2nd interlude the most!

A strong territory for VM  Youth-romance-with no-holds-barred and he throws in some nice, imaginative phrases:

#117 & 118 azhagAna pookkaL & kanavOdu Engum (SPB solo & SJ solo)

A couple of very good songs from IR-VM combo happened to be in this anbE Odi vA movie - both of the same melody but different lines / interludes. One for a happy situation and another somewhat sad (but not extreme azhuvAchchi pathos).

I'm a big fan of the SJ number while also enjoying the SPB number as a decent one! On a one to one comparison, SJ version scores big time for me (and I'm being repetitive in saying this)

Despite brief indulgences of his keywords (காமன் மகள், முகம் வேர்க்கும்), VM had written beautiful poetry for these two numbers IMO. Please have a look:

#119 jOdi nadhigaL (anbE Odi vA, SPB)

Last hit number that we'll catalog for the year 1984 from the IR-VM combo. Like I mentioned in the SPB-IR thread this one wasn't the most-preferred song for me from the album. Actually, a song that I didn't qualify as hit (thuLLum iLamai idhu) had a lot more listens than jOdi nadhigaL by me those days. Recently too I had that thuLLum iLamai idhu song on repeat in car for the terrific way that SPB had rendered the song.

Coming back to jOdi nadhaigaL - a song that Director Balki recalled during the Jaya TV concert of IR, VM had some decent lines to suit the situation. Let us hunt for the youtube now...

The words beautifully sit on the melody and flow very well while also narrating the story (i.e. movie proceedings). Nice job by VM!

I'm back to my data-analyst mode, getting the list of 1985 tracks / categorizing them as hits-otherwise and will come back soon with total annual numbers and VM's % in it...

This was possibly the first year when original movies with "all-VM-songs" did big biz at BO. (Movies like NN, kAdhal Oviyam -though the music was big hit - bombed at BO. In 1985, mudhal mariyAdhai changed that).

Must be the best year for VM - in any case, let me get the actual numbers...

With a more accurate database that has "album release year" as the driver, I refined the annual listing process somewhat for the year 1984 and will continue in the same fashion for 1985 too.

That is, I won't care if the movie too got released in 1985 or not - it's just the album release that counts.

Unfortunately, there will be an exception (a correction of sort) - a movie whose album got released earlier and we haven't covered then because the movie got released in 1985 - MOKK - that will be included in 1985 tally.

We'll make similar correction in case we find out something of this sort for 1986 too

As of now, I have a list of some 261 TFM songs by rAsA, released in 1985! (That includes the 5 tracks of MOKK from 1983).

I need to now classify them as HIT-NOT HIT & then find out how many hits rAsA had for 1985. It will be much easier to find the VM% from that (excel filter and an eye-ball cross-check in case of doubt, with vinyl cover and such, will do the job).

rAsA had been consistently working on this many projects month after month for years and providing endless hits! (Even now, at this age, he composes for far more movies than the likes of ARR / HJ)...

After googling through, I've given brief listen to ALL the songs as per our xls for 1985 tracks (as mentioned before, album release date, with the only exception of meeNdum OKK).

Some are obvious hits (sindhu bhairavi, mudhal mariyAdhai etc). However, some movies are there that I've not even heard about (e.g. thudikkum nenjam) that I had to at least scan through the track before concluding if it was hit in TN those days.

Let me post the results (will take more than one post as there're a lot of films / tracks / details)

First of all, let me list the albums for the year :

Some of the above could be "dubbed" ones from other lang. (The case of one melody is funny, it occurs in both anbin  mugavari as well as pAdum paRavaigaL, but two different songs).

Let me get into the non-VM hit list in the next post and finally the VM-list % etc after that.

The numbers in that list aside, the sheer range and variety of music with the number of commercial successes for the leading heroes is mind boggling 

Taking out some repeats, instrumental tracks, slogam tracks etc, there're still a huge number of 261 TF songs by rAsA that got composed, recorded, released in that year!

(Add his other language works, it could possibly cross 300 songs)!

What a tremendous amount of output - definitely unparallelled in the recorded history I think!

Now, out of those, there are 145 numbers that get my nod as HIT songs! (If one cares, that is a prolific 55% hit rate at that volume)

 

Can you believe? TN-ers those days were hungry for TFM and feverishly visiting recording centers, listening to them in buses, tea shops, radios, marriage halls and everywhere else - including in their own homes!

Never in the history before was there are huge supply (& corresponding demand) for quality music!

Now, rAsA employed a variety of lyricists to get those songs out. Let me list the non-VM hits here first (not typing the name of lyricist here, you can either check in our raw-material-spreadsheet in the tracks DB thread or wait for the Release 0 spreadsheet).

1980 : 1 (less than 2% of IR's hit# for the year)

1981 : 10 (15%)

1982 : 31 (33%)

1983 : 40 (38%)

1984 : 37 (34.5%)

1985 : 49 (33%) - Though the number had gone up, the % came down - because rAsA was more prolific

1986 - To do

1987 & later - none (except may be some residues / dubbing etc)

So, until 1985, VM wrote for 168  hit songs under rAsA music - in a period of around 6 years. We have another year after this and we may cross the #200 - we'll talk about the total number at that point of time :-)

IR never worked with Na. Kamarasan if I'm right. He did work with N. Kamarajan. Yes, they were two people. This is Na Kamarasan. This is N Kamarajan. idhula reNdu koalty irukku  IR we all know respects Kannadasan immensely. Kannadasan'a thootriya/thootri koNdirukkum Na. Kamarasan oda Raaja did not have any truck. indha vishayangaLLa, respect for Raaja goes up.

Thank you! Raaga fellow has confused me. and yeah, NaKa was an MGR jinkchak. So one theory which I put in the backburner stands true. In the film, Solla Thudikkudhu Manasu, there is a song he wrote, thEnmozhi anbu thEnmozhi. The second charanam concludes by invoking Kamban but slyly bringing in a line, கவியரசன் தோற்றானே, புவி முழுதும் உனதடிமை! தேன்மொழி...  I reckon that's a sly dig at Kannadasan.

Munk - okatE chandrudu, okatE sooryudu, okadE nA kAmarasau  

He was a staunch MGR kooja, and his potshots at Kaviarasar was also to curry favour with MGR. But MGR  being MGR, didnt give too much leeway for this, and had huge respect for Kaviarasar despite the political differences.

I guess when it came to MGR, IR didnt have much say. Infact, in those days, he wasnt big enough to take on MGR or even NTR. NTR forced him to record khaike paan banaraswala as is. Our man did add a few subversive touches but it is largely the same as original.

Infact, IR swore off Telugu for sometime after this experience.

#120 chinnakkuyil pAdum pAttu kEkkudhA (poovE poochchooda vA, KSC)

The movie introduced two fantastic talents to TF and another sensational artist. KSC & Fazil were the talents & Nadhiya the sensational (lot of girls started to follow her those days).

Besides, this signalled another interesting thing to the IR-VM combo. Prior to this movie, whenever VM wrote all (or most) songs for a movie where IR scored music, though the album became immensely popular, the movie used to bomb at BO. (ninaivellAm nithyA is a great example ; kAdhal Oviyam another. pudhumaippEN wasn't big either, though AVM's relentless propaganda / ads made it seem like having a decent run at BO).

OTOH, poovE poochchooda vA, where VM penned all the four songs (well, lyrically speaking, three), became a phenomenal success at the BO. Despite being a city-sophi kind of movie, it was a patti-thotti hit and the songs were everywhere in TN.

One of the albums about which VM can really be proud of! With none of his typical innuendos and oft-repeat words / phrases. I'm not sure how much of this was due to Fazil - who had such great taste and was a class apart even within the MF world full of aRivujeevis. (Just think about the title of the Mal original of this movie : nOkkeththA dhooraththu kaNNum nattu! And the main song had starting lines as "Ayiram kaNNumAi kAththirunnu ninne njAn").

KSC was still "logging in" and her Thamizh diction is not very clear at this time - some words are even tough to identify (unlcear ones are in italics), though the singing is impeccable and sweet! Or, may be she had a cold that day 

#121 pattAsach chuttuchchuttup pOdattumA (poovE poochchooda vA, KSC)

For KSC who comes from the land where vallinam is not preferred, this must have been quite a challenging song :)Also, her "cold" seems more evident in this number at some places. rAsA possibly felt that it adds to the childish charm and left it without editing IMHO.

VM had scored really well, stitching the words nicely to a thuLLal melody and rAsA ornamented with some galloping orch to make it a sweet package! Everything seemed to have worked out very well for the Fazil debut in TF!

Like the chiinnakkuyil song, here too some clarity issues (in italics). However, one of them was not by KSC.

#121 & #122 poovE poochchooda vA (KSC version & KJY version)

Much had been posted about these songs over the years! Interesting to see that the lyrics are ditto for both versions. (Just one change -  நீ என் becomes நான் உன் in second saraNam). Both are in the movie, with ditto orch as well - but used for (relatively) happier / sadder situations. KJY's for happy & KSC's for pathos - that's the only interesting difference 

What a confidence by rAsA in a new singer to give that sOga touch simply by her voice & singing! It's a great tribute IMHO, considering the fact that KJY's voice - which often got used for pathos in movies prior - is used for the relatively happy situation! (And people used to think that KJY can only sing in sOga mode. That comedian who fancies himself as music reviewer even blamed KJY's singing for more depression cases in Kerala )

BTW, KJY is singing for Padmini pAtti. Since her voice turned almost masculine by this time, SJ would have been an inappropriate choice, though she could have done some mimicry to sound like Padmini pAtti!

My personal preference, as always, is obviously the KSC one - though KJY is one of my all-time-fav singers. In fact, I consider his voice as one among the top Indian voices ever! Well, my preference is applicable to EVERY song for which there's a version each by KJY & KSC - quite common in Malayalam in 80's. KSC versions always move me stronger than the KJY versions. As I watched the youtube today, as usual, kaNkaLil thaNNeer for the KSC version. Unfortunately, I got reminded of her personal loss too

One of the best situational works by VM under IR's music!

Short folk songs of mudhal mariyAdhai...

One of the best works of VM's career was this film songs (perhaps his best with rAsA). In addition to giving VM the opportunity to write all the songs, IIRC, the IR-BR duo also gave him space on the music album to introduce songs. Such were their friendship / uRavu at that time. (Unfortunately, the BR-VM combo hurt rAsA in some undisclosed manner just after a year or so - so badly that IR never worked with VM anymore and even chose to not compose for BR at that point of time).

Anyways, let's talk about the best of their times for the next few songs. Today, let me cover the three relatively short songs -that became immensely popular thru out TN and may be occasionally playing even nowadays...

I cannot that easily find the youtubes for such short songs (while the longer four have plenty of links available, even the one that was edited off for theater screenings - rAsAvE onna nambi).

These short numbers are supposed to express the poetic heart of the village perusu, beautifully enacted by NT. Included in them are some country humor plus some vulgarity that is not obvious (double meaning in some cases - straight in others). VM possibly fancied himself as the perusu when he wrote
(Well, BR too fancied himself in that role I think.)
