Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
2 versions,2 different reviews
Tamil :
http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/south-review-needhane-en-ponvasantham-is-disappointing/20121214.htm
Pavithra Srinivasan feels that Tamil film Needhane En Ponvasantham isn't as good as director Gautham Menon's previous films.
There's no doubt that when it comes to urban rom-coms, director Gautam Vasudev Menon knows his stuff.
He
knows how to introduce his characters, put them against an appealing
backdrop, slowly allow us to watch them as they evolve, and then
introduce a conflict that seems to destroy everything.
In Photon Kathaas and RS Infotainments' Needhane En Ponvasantham he
attempts to do something similar, but falls into the trap every
seasoned filmmaker dreads -- of repeating his own mandatory formula.
Varun
Krishnan (Jiiva), a clean-cut, fresh-faced youngster is at a college
cultural festival with his friend Prakash (Santhanam) when he sets eyes
on Nithya Vasudevan (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) and that changes his life.
She's
a bewitching beauty and he can barely take his eyes off her. It's when
he comments to his friend, "She's so beautiful! How did I ever let her
go?" that you realise that Varun and Nithya have a history.
He shows her what he feels when he sings the classic Needhane Endhan Ponvasantham number, and it's obvious that she has feelings for him as well.
Their
love story unfolds through a series of flashbacks, starting from their
friendship as children, through school, when it blossomed into love.
He
finds her dazzlingly beautiful and she acknowledges that he's "cute,"
but beyond that there seems to be little to explain the romance. Still,
you're invested enough in Varun and Nithya to find out how their
relationship progresses.
The relationship soon hits a
road-block. Varun refuses to commit and Nithya, puzzled and hurt, breaks
off. And this is when the tedium begins.
The second half of the story is full of tears, recriminations and quarrels that make little sense.
The arguments and debates that made the first half intriguing now fall flat, and you get tired of the back-and-forth.
The
screenplay unravels swiftly, weighed down with supposedly deep feelings
which leave one cold. By the time Varun confronts Nithya during the
climax, the theatre hoots with laughter.
Jiiva is his usual
confident self, and there's genuine appreciation in his eyes as he looks
at his co-star, which makes his acting convincing.
Samantha is
pretty, graceful, and does an excellent job of conveying the emotions of
a girl in love, especially during the school sequence. She carries the
film on her slender shoulders.
Of the rest, only Santhanam makes a mark, especially during the Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya spoof. The fact that he receives more applause than anyone else in the film tells its own tale.
As in many Menon films, the supporting cast is there just to provide the backdrop.
Maestro Ilaiyaraja's score brings back a rush of nostalgia, reminding us of his best works in the 1980s and '90s. Satru Munbu, is especially effective, but where he truly makes his mark is in the background music.
Rajeevan's
art-work fits the bill, while Antony's editing tries to make sense of a
swiftly unravelling movie. M S Prabhu and Omprakash's cinematography is
unobtrusive.
This one is certainly no Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, and ends up being rather disappointing.
Telugu :
Radhika Rajamani feels Telugu film is a believable love story.
Gautham Vasudev Menon, who's back with yet another love story -- Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu -- makes them relatable, emotional and lyrical with some good music.
Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu is
packaged with all the right ingredients -- a fairly good and sensitive
screenplay, fine performances by the lead pair, Nani and Samantha,
melodious music by the maestro Ilaiyaraja and decent production values.
The film is largely relatable.
Yet it is very slow paced and this seems to be the main deterrent.
The
story traverses through three different phases of Varun Krishna (Nani)
and Nithya Elavarthy's (Samantha) love life --school, college and later
when they are 25. They fall in and out of love during the film. The
film, therefore, moves back and forth to track their romance, break-up,
patch-ups all on account of different issues /reasons in their lives --
family responsibility, ego, self interest etc.
In this romantic
journey of the lead pair, the audience is pulled into the varied
emotions they experience. The joys, sadness, friendship, family -- all
are woven into the rather realistic narrative.
Despite all these
delightful elements, the film's slow pace wears it down. However, Nani
and Samantha try to keep it lively with their little tiffs and their
emotional upheavals as they cruise along.
Subtle nuances
have been faithfully rendered by the actors by way of their
performances. Menon shows his understanding of contemporary
relationships yet again. And he's definitely a master at that.
The dialogues too have a whiff of humour in many places and is ably supported by the presence of Krishnudu.
The camera work is not as good as in Ye Maaya Chesaave; it could have been better. The editing too could have been looked into.
Nani
and Samantha steal the show with their heartfelt and natural
performances. For a love story, the acting of the main leads is crucial
and these two do a convincing job. They live their roles of Varun and
Samantha and that adds authenticity to the film.
Ilaiyaraja's music and background score provide fitting backdrop to the love story. The songs Layi Layi and Yedi Yedi linger.
Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu is a believable love story and can be watched for Samantha and Nani who shine all the way through in their emotional journey.

Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
Behindwoods, Rediff have given 2.5* Expecting 2.75 from thollai/sify.
Heard thollai has been paid a handsome sum for Kumki, so expect a 3.434 from him.
Gulti phlows mostly fosteev. Nani/Samantha and more importantly for Raaja. Raaja-va madhikka therinja pasanga.
Telugu cinema: 3.25/5
After Sri Ramarajyam, this is Maestro Ilayaraja's best musical work. Gautham Menon has used Raja's mellifluous numbers as narrative device. Layi Layi and Yedi Yedi are the numbers that make more impact on screen. And the maestro's BGM is outstanding. Ilayaraja’s music speaks volumes in the film. When words fail, emotions go void, its Ilayaraja’s music that does all the talking.
IdleBrain 3/5
Music by Ilayaraja is very good. Yedhi Yedhi song is the best followed by Koti Koti tarallona, Yenthentha Dooram, Laayi Laayi and Inthakaalam.
Rediff 3/5

Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
Hubber teja (on YVM):
Telugu version of the film (Yeto vellipoyindi manasu) has been getting mostly positive reviews. Some reviewers loved the film. As usual, heaps of praises on Maestro.
I have seen the film. Though the fanboy in me is disappointed in the BGM department, the film as such is not bad, if you put up with the slow pace. GVM shot a few songs very well... "Laayi laayi", "Yententa dooram", "Koti koti" are a delight.. especially the first one. The film is way too verbose... offering very little scope for BGM. GVM seems to rely on dialoges more than expressions. There is not much Raja can do when the lead characters keep bickering through out the film. Over all, not bad.

The BGM is not bad. Hello no, it's Raaja. Just that the film has nothing going on in the frames. It's like a barren expanse of uninspiring monotony.
Was enjoying the songs with rather kanneer at the same time

Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
the hindu says YVM is gentle like breeze
If there’s a bone to pick, and a huge one at that, it’s the slow pace of the film. A run time of 2 hours 20 minutes feels much longer.
A huge asset and an integral part of the story is maestro Ilayaraja’s music. The melodies and the soothing background score gel with the film, never once striking a wrong note. Gautham pays an ode to the maestro and Mani Ratnam. We catch a fleeting glimpse of Alaipayuthey and Varun’s journey to the seaside hamlet to meet Nithya is a throwback to that famous love story.
Watch Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu with the person you love, for there may be many moments you would relate to. A wee bit of patience would help. Stay with the pace of the film and it will reward you with some fine moments in the latter half.

Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
ToI on YVM
The music is enchanting. Ilayaraja's compositions are delectable to say the least and grow on you slowly. On the flipside though the leisurely pace with which the movie unfolds might just turn out to be an issue for the general audiences used to the hit-and-run-style of narratives. Also we've had a few slice-of-life romances since Ye Maya Chesave released three years ago, so the element of novelty might just be a little compromised. Also the movie is made with an aesthetic that might be too multiplex in nature. So the galleries might just be feeling a little left out as it's all a little too subtle and nuanced. There's loads of romance though, and it looks like the movie is made with lots of love.
