Gangai Amaran as music director

Viswam Nataraj ( @CMDViswamsGroup ) was surprised to see a GA-KJY song from 70's that I posted today on twitter.

And he asked a question  " அப்பவே அமர் இசையமைச்சிருக்காரா".

Such is the pathetic condition of GA's wikipedia page (which I've commented about years ago when documenting 100 hand-picked songs where GA wrote lyrics for IR).  It has not become any better even now.

Let me catalog some of his works as MD in TFM. (Regardless of whether the songs / albums were popular or not).

His first album that got released as a LP record was "malargaLilE avaL malligai" IIRC.

It was in 1978.

I've tweeted about all those songs today and let me capture them here as the first set of songs for this thread

As we've seen in the previous post, though GA had his first disk as MD released in 1978, he had no movie releases that year.

So, he had to wait till 1979, to see his name as "Music Director" on titles in a theater

There are at least 3 movies listed under his name from 1979 theater releases. Let us post them one by one here in this thread.

"karai kadandha kuRaththi" was the name of the movie when the audio disk got released. As such the "kuRaththi" name got used those days in a derogatory way by many, this caused an outrage and they had to change the name to "karai kadandha oruththi" when they went to censor.

As per the above images, there had been 4 songs in the album. I've definitely heard one of them - "Odaththula thaNNeeru" which was very popular, had regular air time - espeically on IOKS. Not sure about the other three songs. (I'm surprised 2 songs are there on every platform - apple / spotify etc).

On GA's getting offers as MD - here's my take

People possibly picked him as "poor man's Ilayaraja" - knowing that he'll charge less but will perhaps do the following:
a) Get some melodies from Pannaippuram that both had grew up with (e.g. those their mother used to sing, like 'Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE' or 'annakkiLi unnaiththEdudhE')
b) Use the same orchestra & players - so the quality of output will be good (though GA himself admitted that they never sounded as good as when IR was conducting)
c) Has somewhat similar musical talent as his older brother from genetics
d) Can even get some "Ilayaraja tunes rejected by big directors such as BR from initial days"

The first BO success movie with GA music must be "suvar illAdha siththirangaL" - which was first directorial venture of K Bagyaraj.

And most people are familiar with 'காதல் வைபோகமே" which was a super hit song! Frequently played on radio those days and also in buses / teakkadais (yes that culture had already started, thanks to the popularity of TFM by IR).

I believe this song also got a "remix" version in recent times Not sure if they retained the vocal originals of Janaki and Vasu...

There are two other SPB songs (one with his sister) were not as popular as the MV song. Of course, the pathos number "ஆடிடும் ஓடமாய் ஆனதே காதலே" got played in radio every now and then and I can recall it immediately :

OTOH, the other song "welcome-you are welcome" (which I found out to be the title song) was not much known or popular. It's possible I've heard it once or twice but do not remember well.

Overall, it was quite a success for GA as MD, though it had only few numbers - as per the standards of that time period

As we had already seen in the KJY's non-IR TFM hits thread, GA had yet another movie in the year 1979, oru vidukathai oru thodarkathai, directed by MA Kaja.

The album had 4 songs as per one audio sleeve that I could get on the web (actually the movie is also on YT, those who want to cross check can watch the movie Unfortunately, I don't have the time or patience at this time).

Entering 1980 with an album that had a super hit song - "pon mAnaiththEdi nAnum poovOdu vandhEn".

This is a clear case of song being a hit though movie flopped, full credits to the composer! (IIRC, I used to compare this song with IR's 'vAdAdha rOsAppoo' song which has a very similar orchestration - which is surely a high order of comparison!)

The song played all the time on IOKS and other radio stations / buses / teakkadais and horn speakers in all village functions! Extremely popular!

Another 1980 album that had popular songs was "malargaLE malarungaL" - not sure how the movie fared at BO (possibly below-average, definitely not a hit) - but 3 songs played frequently everywhere those days.

"rAmAyi vasaukku vandhuttA" was another movie that GA did MD in the year 1980. This had Menaka in the lead role.

I could see 3 songs listed in the disks (no disk sleeve could be found on my search).





And all the three songs are available on YT - also the movie is available on YT. (Titles show GA had an assistant called Philips - it will be interesting to know if he is still around and has any social media presence).

Never heard the other songs before - surprising to note that GA had two songs done by TMS at a time period when the singer had issues with IR (to the extent that IR was not signed up for Sivaji Ganesan movies for a few years)...

Found the disc sleeve and details of a 1979 album today on the web.

Most probably the film never got released - I'm familiar with just one song (the JC-SJ number) and possibly heard it on SLBC (IOKS).

That song and the KJY solo sound listenable - the other two are not my cup of tea.

Moving on to 1981, we get one of the BIGGEST HITS of GA's musical career. This was also a blockbuster hit for K Bagyaraj, in a scale much superior to all his previous movies.

First part of the story came as a "thodar kadhai" in Kumudam, with movie stills themselves (instead of the norm of pictures drawn by artists such as Jayaraj / Maniam Selvan / Maruthi et al). And it ended in a way similar to "pAttu pushthagams"  - "மீதியை வெள்ளித்திரையில் காண்க "

The movie was a smash hit and the songs were a rage - playing everywhere, for years!

Though most of us were naive to believe those days that there was a "IR-GA" combo album - because of the way they advertised and promoted the movie, the reality of "sankarlal" was quite different.

Documenting here once again, for historical purposes.

The movie / album started off with IR as MD by T N Balu (producer / director) - with Kamal / Sridevi. This was after the humongous success of his movie "sattam en kaiyil" (that had IR's music of course).

Sadly, after starting the movie (and possibly recording "iLankiLiyE" during the poojai, as per the practice those days), the director died and the movie was in limbo for a while.

Later, when Kamal revived it with the cameraman as director (lot of work possibly got done by KH himself), they could not possibly get IR's dates (as he became extremely busy) and instead signed up GA. When they released the disk, however, they made it appear as if IR-GA were "co-composers' (which was not true, as indicated by the INRECO picture clearly below):





There are a couple of other pictures that possibly caused naive fans to think that "aNNan thambi" were working on music together (as in mella thiRandhadhu kadhavu later on with MSV) :

Of course, IR's song is the best but the GA songs weren't bad either. The movie was a terrible flop and people don't remember the songs much these days.

GA produced the first movie of Bharathi-Vasu (Santhanabharathy & P Vasu directed a few movies together in this name). It was panneer pushpangaL, with superb score by IR (phenomenal songs such as poonthaLirAda / Anandha rAgam / kOdai kAlakkAtRE).

Their next movie was "madhu malar" and it had music by GA as all these were close pals. Unfortunately, neither the album nor the movie did well in the market. (Their next movie was produced by Bharathiraja with IR music, mellappEsungaL, that introduced Banupriya to TF field).

Could not find disk sleeve for this album but the pictures of disks are available on the web, to account for the correct credits

I have heard the KJY-UR song frequently on IOKS - none of the other songs are familiar to me ; possibly never heard some before...

I was surprised to see the name of R Sundarrajan in the titles for the 1981 movie "oruthi mattum karaiyinilE" that had GA music. Not surprising, knowing he was trying hard for a while before hitting it big with payaNangaL mudivadhillai.

Well, this album had just once song which is known to me - as it got enough air time those days - sOLakkarudhu Adudhu by SPB-SJ.

Realized today that another older album (like the unreleased "valampuri changu") got missed out and it is from 1980.

thEneer (movie by "kudisai" Jayabharathi) had GA as MD and released only the disk in 1980. Like Saravanan sir who reminisces this in dhool, me too have heard the 'unadhE iLamAlaippozhudhu' song on IOKS those days.

The movie did not get released as such but possibly went thru some changes and came out in 1984 as "oomai janangaL" - still credited to GA but at least one song is listed as V Kumar's in the titles (written by Kavingar Kannadasan).

There's another 1981 album called "koochcham" - not sure if the movie came out or not.

However, at least one song got played frequently on radio (don't remember clearly if it was IOKS or otherwise). Also, a couple of songs are on YT and the disk sleeves are available on the internet, so let us it get it cataloged here under 1981
