#34 kadal meengaL (1981)
Kamal in double role must have been the primary reason for the decent run of this movie. (AFAIR, it was not a mega hit but just business positive kind of venture).

thAlAttudhE vAnam, enRenRum AnandhamE - enough said. (The other two songs were popular too - madhani madhani aka mayilE mayilE & mAnE oru mangalachchippi un thAyE).

Possibly Ambika's first movie (as a jOdi to Suman). Kamal had Sujatha & Swapna as his girls.

G N Rangarajan direction IIRC.

#35 inRu pOy nALai vA (1981)

IR's first movie with KBR as director. Though this didn't have the size of success of some earlier movies of KBR (as mouna geethangaL / oru kai Osai), this was a commercially positive film.

Interestingly, a recent hit movie of Santhanam was alleged to be a copy of this.

In any case, there are people who fondly remember the comedy of this movie to this day (me never seen the movie).

Musically, I don't rate this as a biggie. (mEri pyAri / pala nAL Asai / madhana mOga all are average numbers IMHO, one of them even REPEATS interludes, which is a rarity with rAsA). That way, this is movie is just for "hit kaNakku"

#36 netRikkaN (1981)
There was supposedly uncertainty as to whom KB will sign-up as MD for this movie produced by him (Kavidhalayam) that won't be directed by him but SPM.

It is not that SPM was stranger to MSV - he did do movies with him, i.e. masAlAs with Rajini, such as pOkkiri rAjA & rANuva veeran.

So, going by the then-strong-preference-of-MSV-by-KB, it should have been MSV the default choice for this movie.

Most probably it was "market reality" that pushed KB to sign-up IR for this venture

Rajini as dad & son with Lakshmi / Saritha / Menaka...I guess the movie had a decent run and rAsA had a (relatively small) part in it.

And Raaja's BGM (in addition to the songs) especially in the scene where Rajni repeatedly slaps Lakshmi before he slaps Lakshmi. Wow.

1981 ஆகஸ்டு 15-ந்தேதி வெளியான 'நெற்றிக்கண்', நூறு நாட்களுக்கு மேல் ஓடியது. இப்படம் தெலுங்கிலும் 'டப்' செய்யப்பட்டு நன்றாக ஓடியது.

#37 bAla nAgammA (1981)
While some of the big star movies struggled during this year (will list them later on), this movie was a surprise winner. It was a bilingual and possibly hit success in both. Sridevi acted in it and was becoming a BO power on her own merit in TF & TeF (and she did the same in HF too later on).

koondhalilE mEgam vandhu, paLLi aRaikkuL malligaiyai, sangeetham en dhEgam, neer kodukka piRandhadhammA were all heard on radio every now and then. During later years, some of these songs also got their requests from people at "recording centers".

Kamal had 2 more "sumAr run" kind of movies with rAsA music this year. Let's include them in the "vaNiga vetRi" list here. (Both had awesome songs IMHO).

#38 Ram Latchuman (1981)
vAlibamE vA vA, vizhiyil un vizhiyil, nadakkattum rAjA namma rAjjiyam, nAn dhAN ungappandA - all SPB sweeties and hits.

Movie had yAnai too (Devar films).

#39 meeNdum gOkilA (1981)
Kamal - Sridevi (as a madisAr mAmi) - Deepa (as actress behind whom the hero joLLufies).

Original photo-shoot was with Rekha who wasn't part of the movie when it was actually made. 4 great songs for a movie that had only average run. (chinnanchiru vayadhil. ponnAna mEni, rAdhA rAdhA nee engE, hEy OrAyiram)

These two plus kadal meengaL had +ve BO for Kamal IIRC.

Those that were duds at BO:

-Shankarlal (Kamal-Sridevi, portions allegedly directed by KH as T N Balu died, iLangiLiyE the only IR song - rest of the songs / MD work was by Gangai Amaran)

-rAjapArvai (Kamal's 100th, produced by him, Madhavi, andhi mazhai / vizhiyOraththukkanavum / azhagE azhagu)

-tik tik tik (That high-profile BR movie with Madhavi's bikini creating lot of sensation, poo malarndhida / nEtRu indha nEram / idhu oru nilAkkAlam are still popular)

-ellAm inba mayam (another G N Rangarajan movie with mAman veedu, sollachcholla enna perumai, burla burla, onnum onnum reNdu thAnE songs which were all hits those days)

#40 kazhugu (1981)

sumAr collection movie for Rajini, despite some phenomenal songs! (oru poovanaththula, ponnOviyam, kAdhalennum thEril, thEdum deivam nEril - all were terrific and sounding way advanced for that time period).

Panju A production with SPM direction I think. Much was written about one luxury bus built for the movie.

While netRikkaN was a hit and kazhugu was sumAr, Rajini had a terrible flop (which was bilingual I think) - garjanai!

That had terrific songs too - way advanced synth sounds, guitar mirattals...oru ooril oru maharANi, sooppukkuk kOzhiyum vandhadhakkA, enna sugamAna ulagam, varuvAy anbE, kuththum oosi valikkum).

Those three flops in one year (rAja pArvai, garjanai, tik-tik-tik) gave Madhavi "ராசி இல்லாத நடிகை" title
(Must be because all those movies were frequently on news / huge ads etc).

Hindu paper comment about this movie

#41 vidiyum varai kAththiru (1981)

Another "sumAr run" movie. KBR was on the rise during this time and his movies typically had good run. This one was named a "thriller" but it also had some sentiment stuff and had tasted only limited success. IR did his part decently, with a couple of hit songs (neengAtha eNNam onRu & pEsu en anbE, both had decent radio time and also acceptance against target IRFs) and terrific BGM as usual.

Looks like that was the only BO +ve movie left from the year to be covered in this thread.

Among the rest of the movies from that year, which had great songs but failed miserably with audience were :

And then there were others that possibly didn't even have hit songs :

I haven't followed this series fully but musically if I really have to pick one year(which is very difficult) that sort of defined who IR was quintessentially at that time, it has got to be 1980. Lucky were those who were old enough to tune to their all india radios as every fortnight you kept getting hit with a fresh soundtrack that had at least 2 winners and in a lot of cases all 5.
