Don't worry, it's will be properly "balanced" by ANOTHER COMPOSER WEEK soon afterUsha wrote:Airtel super singer - Ilaiyaraja vaaram.
Regardless, let us celebrate this week (and be happy for whatever minimum is being done by the channel, to honor one of TN's top genius personalities of 20th century)

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 2
That interview corroborates the sadistic composer stuff ARR mentioned in the NDTV show. Especially these words: "You had to be a good musician to play for Illaiyaraja. It was tough to play for his music. He wanted exactly what he wrote. With Panchamda it was working together, adjusting to everybody’s capabilities and requirements. For Illaiyaraja, what was put on the score sheet had to have no deviation. Musicians had tough times with him."jaiganesh wrote:http://www.swaraalap.com/epaper/oct_09/index_pg_3.htm
But as far as I know, Western classical composers never adjusted their scores for the musicians and neither do the ones who score for Hollywood. That is what IR said of his experience of working with Budapest Orchestra. In the first take, they would play it exactly as he wanted, no questions asked. That is the relationship between COMPOSER and MUSICIANS. Otherwise, it would be a band - RD Burman band, AR Rahman band, etc. So now we know where the innuendo about his thimuru comes from - primarily, the plain and simple fact that he is an uncompromising taskmaster and hardcore professional.

With regards to the overall styles, they showed 2 different schools of instrument playing. Panchamda was more rhythmic, even his brass section was full of rhythm. The demarcation was clear with a full spread-out harmony. Panchamda also gave a lot of focus to the Strings section. With Illaiyaraja, it was more technical stuff, more hard music. You had to be a good musician to play for Illaiyaraja. It was tough to play for his music. He wanted exactly what he wrote. Thanks a lot Jai for sharing this valuable interview.jaiganesh wrote:http://www.swaraalap.com/epaper/oct_09/index_pg_3.htm
What I like the most is this
Shankar: Having worked with RD Burman and Illaiyaraja the most, what have you to say about their composing styles?
Blasco M.: RD Burman’s team of musicians always sat together to produce music. On the other hand, Illaiyaraja composed his music keeping the musicians in mind. We as musicians never knew what was in his mind. With Panchamda we had an idea of what was coming. He used to suggest things like “Put one chord here; add this piece here“. There was a sense of excitement for the musicians as there was always some discovery happening. With Illaiyaraja, it was the opposite. He used to sit thinking for the music piece and after a few minutes would get down to writing the notations. He was sure of what he always wanted. He then sat with the musicians for their part and checked if he was happy with it. In about 30-45 minutes, the entire song was finished. When he went back to the monitor room for the final recording, the entire score was in his brain! Many a time, he even challenged musicians on the sequence of playing of their own notes. And not once did he end up on the wrong side. It was a one-man show, literally!
Panchamda had two different types of arrangers for him; Manoharida and Basuda. Manoharida was strong with Western music; Basuda was strong with classical music. It was a combination of the heavy and light musical pieces. This served as a good mix for Panchamda’s songs. With Illaiyaraja, it was all a solo effort. Nobody could tell him to change the style of playing. What was given to the musicians was final.

It's pretty obvious that such won't make any difference to long-time IR admirers. OTOH, any small thing helps in stopping the constant efforts by the opposite gumbal in their "முழுப்பூசணிக்காயை சோத்துக்குள்ள மறைக்கும் முயற்சி"

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 2
Yes..yes thanks to Jai.. this (Blasco's statement) is one of the most definitive statements from a reliable source on the working style of IR.
BTW, our malayali brothers seem to revere him so much. Sharath's statement even a 'sustain' in IR's music is 'musical' is really thought provoking. Maybe it is just not the tune, but the chords, the short instrumental bridge phrases between lines, single note harmonies (like a triangle sound here and there) and like Sharath says even the 'sustain' of a note contributes to the impact and lasting value of his music.
The more the people are knowledgeable/expert in music/their instrument, the more the appreciation for IR's work, I guess !!!

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 2
im hardcore rasa fan. but also like arr. it was college second year when i walked into neighbours house to watch "oliyum oliyum" in colour weston tv :lol:i think it was the second song played. with total silence like flight lift off all ice cold moutain a duet song. and that ice breaking "sound". my thinnking was not about the song. but who is the music director. it is not rasa? i doubted myself how come i like the sound of the song which is not rasa. i was in confused mode next whole week. recorded the song in tdk cassette repeatedly playing the starting and ice breaking sound. then i know it was not rasa it is ARR. then came 5+ or 10+ and after long break alaipayuthea. i used to tell my friends being hardcore ARR i like his old 90s'. thats it. after long break i liked slumdog and most recently magudi. Then most recently i read the ARR twitter interview someone posted and in another blog about chariots in fire and then kiru mentioned newline cinema. now i am simply stunned and sad as well. my most favorite ARR pudu velai mazhai icebreaking is not from him as original. :xmost stumbling part for me it is not even inspiration just from the starting and it continues exactly from the take off sound to ice breaking sound !. rip off. Now i wonder how ARR manages to market himself and even give such interviews about music? I used to thing being as member of IR troop may be he caught IR's complexities thats the reason he was able to manage and give soothing sound and some tracks in 90s'. now thats in doubt.kiru wrote:Thanks irfan123,

Being a IR fan page let me stop here blabbering or mentioning about ARR anymore.

Will there be yet another Kolkota singer crooning a rAsA song?
How did you spend this Puja?
This year, it was special because I went to Ilayaraja Sir's home. I had gone down south for some work and he invited me to his place. They were also celebrating some festival and an hour-long performance had been organized by him. It was a private function with only family and friends, and I had an invitation to perform! There was a pakhavaj, a violin, a Tabla; it was an eclectic performance, one of the most memorable experiences ever! I got to realize how music can form the crux of a man's life. I mean, you enter his house, and it's a whole new world!

irir123,
Great review. It is nice to see a review by someone who is looking at it from a totally different angle. He doesn't understand Tamil movie looks like but his views give us an idea of how this works as a standalone album.
Can I assume your efforts to ensure this review came out? I am sure you would have put in lot of effort to make this happen. Your dedication to Raja's cause is exemplary. App_eng has circulated the link on twitter and I had also done the same.
Will probably put it in the relevant facebook groups so that there is more visibility for the review.

given the economic situation and other problems, the music critics are hard-pressed to meet deadlines wrto earlier commitments!
Mr. Slawecki was kind enough to accommodate this review, given that its a film album and not a standalone jazz album - so credit goes to him
