Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
Thanks for sharing, great song. Houses in Motion also has an Indian music-like melody in the middle. Even the beat of Houses in Motion (basically slap bass rather than drums, I think) is reminiscent of Carnatic music. But Talking Heads have generally cited more Afro influences so I wonder if there was some convergence between ethnic African music and Carnatic music, who knows.writeface wrote:Talking Heads - Making Flippy Floppy (starting at position 04:01): Awesome bassline plus check out the indian melody in the middle.

Like Hip Hop..check out Remi from Australia:fring151 wrote:Thanks for the recos. Will check them out. . Hearing Fragile and liking it - much much better than TFTO.
And IMO, almost nothing in the mainstream is worth listening to today. The only good contemporary music I hear on the radio is jazz by little known artists. Hip hop is sort of like an occasional guilty indulgence of mine For ex, I find the the school Dr.Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg quite catchy . But even in hip hop, the last few years have been pretty dismal. Snoop Lion (as Snoop Dogg has reinvented himself) doesn't appeal to me and neither d Akon or 50 cent or any of the others.

Another guilty like of mine is : Skrillex and The Doors [ You can hear Jim Morrison turning in his grave:) ]

A personal favorite from Deva. One of the best Chinmayi has sung IMO which is massively underrated:

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
The topic of basslines in IR the other day suddenly reminded me of this track, which I haven't heard in a long time. Walking basslines through practically the whole track along with great drumming and flute.

Which immediately reminded me of this short, but haunting track from the same album, again lovely drums and flute:

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
^^^ Thanks for posting that. I will listen when I get the time to...I mean, it's a full concert!
I just came across this magnificent version of I dreamed a dream, probably the best I have heard. At least I do prefer it by a wide margin to either Susan Boyle or Anne Hathaway's versions. What a voice Ruthie's got!

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
Never realized 'suttun vizhi chudarE' was by Sriram P
V_Sji & Muthu sir too had a tough time believing when I said "I thought so" during the lunch last Friday...confirmed on internet search.
(BTW, I didn't have any doubt w.r.t. the female singer who is unmistakably Bombay J )
Well, V_Sji got reminded of my earlier comparing of Sriram P with Bayilwan Ranganathan (w.r.t. mayilu song, dhukkam enna thuyaram enna) and we had some seconds!

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
BTW, I can't help but get reminded of Vadivelu when watching this song (pOkkiri)
Also, heard the lovely VV rendering of "ennaveNRu solvadhamma, vanjiyavaL pErazhagai" in thillAlangadi today (when the DVD was playing while I drove).
VV is definitely a terrific singer!

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
Nice coincidence App with respect to SriramP singing Suttum Vizhi Sudare . I heard the song today morning and was thinking this sounds like SriramP. I never paid attention to who the singer was when the song came out. Just that have been listening a lot to new songs sung by SriramP for IR and mapped his voice to Suttum Vizhi Sudare. Good to have it confirmed.
I'm with you on the VV effect whenever listening to Suttum Vizhi Sudare

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
Listening to this lilting melody in Manirangu raaga - madhana maaLigaiyil . MSv's rich orchestration is quite captivating. When Sushila sings the anupallavi "azhagu maanickkamaam kattil
anicha malaranaiyaam
vaasalilil thoranam unnai varachollum thOzhigaLAm " - the beauty of the raaga is highlighted and the song soars to new heights . Movie name - Rajapart Rangadurai

Viswanathan is killing me with the charanams, super selection, mythila!
I melt under MSV's feet with these charanangal too.
manam enum medaiyil neendhi vandhen....
Oh My Gosh!
His nearness takes the breath away, isn't it!
See... she takes a moment to enjoy it behind the doors privately!
Pattu varum unnai paarththu kondirundhaal pattu varum....

How to make a haunting song?
Ingredients
1. A beautiful tune with a foreboding sense of sadness in it.
2. Arrangement that encrusts this tune without obfuscating it.
3. A haunting voice to carry this tune
4. A master composer who can own these three.
C.Ramachandra - I salute thee.

Just learnt of this instrumental jazz-hindustani fusion album Shankar Jaikishan did in 1968 called "Raga Jazz Style". Listening to now, reminded me of a typical 'confident ignorant' Rahman fan comment that jazz was never done in Indian films prior to Sillunu Oru Kadhal.

Re: Jukebox - what's playing?
Vinatha, glad you enjoyed walking through the cupid's palace. I mean "madhana maaLigai"
MSV's jaw dropping handling of a soulful, karunaa rasa raagaa like ChArukesi in a playful, romantic, mirthful manner in "azhagiya thamizh magaL ivaL". Beautiful opening music, chorus and Sushila's honey soaked vocals.

Good stuff! Me never knew about this either. "Confident ignorant ARR fans". That should enter common parlance.
