Let's cool-off the irritation caused by kanavu kANum with this smoothie piLLai nilA

One thing that a listener needs to do when watching / listening to the two versions is compare how SJ does the Thamizh "ள" as against how KJY handles it like a typical Malayali. And that letter occurs quite a lot in this song and exposes the inadequacy of KJY in Thamizh once again - though not as bad as 'poovizhi vAsalil yAradi vandhadhu kiliyE kiliyE' days. 



The lyrics for both songs are mostly same. The differences are:

1. Inclusion of  a small nAttuppuRappAttu in the first interlude of SJ version
2. Last couple of lines in second saraNam changed to "thAyE" reference in the male version

Science teacher VM gets fail marks in this song for adding an extra moon to earth
(இரண்டும் வெள்ளை நிலா). There's nothing significantly good or bad in the typical "masAlA-film-family-reunite" kind of song:

vaira varigal.............

One of VM's best songs. Also, apart from the interludes, IR stands out in the arrangements in a scintillating fashion.

1st charanam:

எந்நாளும் நம்மை விட்டுப்போகாது வசந்தம்


There is a tender flute to underline the vasantham in both the versions. The first charanam is almost identical. However, SJ's happy version ends with a terrific tabla fill-in, dheem tharikita tharikita thaka. kEkkara enakku pori thattum ovvoru vaattiyum anga. KJY's sad/angry version ends with a piano fill in.


However, he absofrikkinglutely nails it in the second charanam.


ஆளான சிங்கம் ரெண்டும் கைவீசி நடந்தால்


SJ's version underplays this, coming from a mother and plays the cards close to the chest with just the same flute. The mother's pride gets reflected in those lines and their arrangements. However, when KJY sings for the son, there are rushes of violins that stampede to underline the gravity of his அறச்சீற்றம். Nailed the rage! What fantastic narration by Raaja!


Tough to pick. Arrangements with the tabla for SJ and violins for KJY nu solla oNNumE illa. Rendition is also tough choice. But I'll just tilt towards SJ because a mother to son is more touching (being a son myself) but a son singing for a killed mother, however sympathetic that is, cannot be empathized by us. 

#106 mAmOi mAmOi kaLLukkadai maRandhidunga (dhAvaNikkanavugaL, SPB)

KBR was trying to be the "next MGR" after MGR did kombu seeval to him as vArisu. Basking on his mundhAnai mudichchu grand success, he did a lot of gimmicks in this half-saree dreams. Unfortunately, it didn't do that well and almost pushed him back to normalcy.

I've covered this number -a political tone song  which had very limited reach and nothing compared to the popularity of mu-mu songs - in the IR-SPB thread.

Other songs from this movie were more popular (not by VM) and all had SPB and got covered by me with some nostalgic stories :

oru nAyakan

Radha was used as kaRivEppilai...the movie also used Bharathi Raja & NT as pachcha miLakAi / vaRa miLaKai - but the final result was a not-so-tasty curry by KBR.

sengamalam sirikkudhu

Decided to try something other than masAlA dOsai for dinner and entered a Punjabi restaurant - another first time thingy (that place didn't last long, I couldn't find it even in 1986). The funniest part was when the server brought two bowls with hot water and some cut lemon slices around the time we were finishing up.

Never seen such a thing before and totally confused that we didn't order any "lemon juice", we wondered what was that about. There was also lajjai at not knowing such city things and confusion as to "should we drink it or not".

vAnam niRam mARum

Well, among the extremely big crowd of people at Brindavan - almost like many lines of ants walking on top of the K R Sagar dam, there was this khubsoorat ladki with big eyes who was kind enough and made my day.

Coming back to the VM number, it was funny to see KBR - the vArisu of MGR - indirectly making fun of MGR's IMFL policy

May be VM was instrumental in sneaking this one...

#107 poovAdaikkAtRE (kuttichchAththAn 3D dubbed from Malayalam, KJY)

Though the movie got dubbed from Malayalam, there must have been no great restrictions to the lyricist because of montage stuff (no lip-sync issue, even the scenes are generic, with no special mileau / geographical restrictions).

VM chose to write very simple lines that suit the syrapy melody, it would be interesting to compare these to the Malayalam lines  - unforunately, I've never listened to the Malayalam song from beginning to end  Neither closely scrutinized the words, despite blog post by Drunkenmunk & eloquent praises by jaiganesh in the recent times 

These are VM's (second stanza can probably be written by a 6th grader):

பூவாடைக் காற்றே சுகம் கொண்டு வா
பனி நீராடும் பூவே மணம் கொண்டு வா
பழகும் கிளிகள் இன்று பறக்கின்றதே

What a song! Also, reason I picked Mallu for the blog was because the Tamil version's lyrics were generic. I mean, you or me could write it. Mallu lyrics romba puriyala. But it did sit well with the tune. maa gandhamO, vasantha gaala jaalamO (fresh, spring-like magic (gaala jaalam)?) and karkandilO kadanyadhEdhu kaigaLo (which are the hands that play with the sweets?) are the best parts of the song and the lyrics sit well there.

#108 chellakkuzhandhaikaLE (India's first 3D movie, VJ /Sujatha combo that scores much lower compared to SJ/SPS combo who sang in Malayalam)

The promo on radio (vividh bhArathi) had the first few lines of this song so frequently that even before the movie got released, the song was so widely known! (Much like how everyone was muNu muNuththufying 'snEgithanE' in a later era - much before alai pAyudhE got released, thanks to incessant ads on Sun TV).

Right from the first word, I can say the VM version is nowhere near the 'Alippazham perukkAn peelikkuda nivirththi' of Malayalam

Anyways, this is another case of no-lip-sync-and-no-constraints number. Except that writing for under-18 proved to be a major challenge for VM

Suddenly he forgot he has to be in "அழ.வள்ளியப்பா" mode -instead throws in "புது லீலை மன்னன்" & "நான் தூங்கவே வெகு நாளாகுமே"

Another funny thing I encountered was the song "Eeramaane Rojave ennai parthu moodathe" , I once listened to it on my way to my college at Chidambaram in the Bus. The funny thing is that foll lines that would teach everybody the concept of Bouyancy "Thanneeril moozhgaadhu kaatrulla pandhu ". We realy burst into laughter after listening to this. #109 nilavonRu kaNdEn en jannalil (kairAsikkAran, SPB-SJ)

Sweet song with that famous long prelude and a somewhat-abrupt end to start the pallavi Lovely 'thAmbAlam' sounding percussion / rhythm that goes along with tablA. A song that can go on loop for days and difficult to come out...

Let's focus on VM's effort in this post as the song had been reminisced enough in the forums, including the SPB-IR thread....

Obviously, a terrific first line
Let's survey the rest:

One thing that stands out is no unnecessary VM-isms (except may be the mild violence in "பூவுக்கு வாய்ப்பூட்டு") , one would even think this was written by some newbie. Nothing to praise it as extraordinary or deride it as bad. Typical, cinematic, situational yet romantic. OK job

OTOH, the interludes and the singing - oow!

#110 kai veesum thAmarai (kairAsikkAran, SPB-SJ)

Another hit SPB-SJ number from the same film, duly covered in that long running IR-SPB thread. Both the hits got penned by VM - as understood in the post-musicalaya era

The very first line gives a beautiful imagery - one that of a lotus waving hands! Nice imagination by the kavingar!
 

Let's look at the remaining lines of this vellakkatti song:

There are some lovely uyarvu naviRchi (சேலையில் வான் மின்னல் நூலாகுமே, வேர் கூடப் பூப்பூக்கும்) that stands out

Despite some typical cinematic phrases, overall VM does a nice job!

Interestingly, one thing that caught my eye is Prabhu calling Radha "thEr"

His dad was a lot more generous in calling even KRV as "திருத்தேரில் வரும் சிலை"! While Plum and his co-DFers at tfmpage made fun of the lady in the reverse (சிலை வரும் தேர்), NT himself was far more charitable. His son is harsh on Radha here and VM is the co-conspirator, calling her thEr

#111 thennangeeththum thenRal kAththum (MV/PS, mudivalla Arambam)

Like I mentioned when compiling the 1984 hit list, this album had been released a couple of years earlier and the songs were quite popular on IOKS. The movie must have been in production for quite long and possibly met with lukewarm response when eventually it could come out. Had I paid proper attention, I could have listed this under 1982 - in any case, not much damage done - it's not left out!

BTW, while the "hit" component compels the song to be documented here (and also it being a wonderful composition by rAsA sweetly delivered by MV & PS), the pAdal varigaL are just so-so only.

Moreover, there are some typical VM-isms ("பாயே சூடாப்போச்சு", "ஏன் இந்த தாபம் ஆளான பாவம்", "காமனுக்கும் வாயூற"  ) that could turn some people off while amusing others. That way, it's not something that VM himself may like to showcase as an achievement - the nice first line notwithstanding!

#112 pAdi vA thenRalE oru poovaiththAlAttavE (mudivalla Arambam, PJ)

Watching the few words that Sarath Babu says before singing this song reminds one of the kumudam review of that movie - ஆ....ரம்பம்!


Nevertheless, very delightful song! It gave me so much pleasure those days to listen to this on IOKS - especially in their nEyar viruppam program betweem 5 & 6 PM! Like I mentioned in the case of some SPB songs in that long-running series, songs like this transport one to those enjoyable summer evenings of the late-70's & early-80's at grandparent's place with transistor radio playing IOKS non-stop!

Sweet lines for a terrific composition by rAsA! The lead guitar prelude is mesmerizing!

Interesting to see the "பூவே செண்டானது" which IIRC got repeated 2 yrs later in the kairAsikkAran song that got posted yesterday.

Personally I love the phrase "பூச்செண்டு", being the name of one of my fav school teachers (his extraordinarily beautiful handwriting & badminton skills made him a hero / model). As far as I know, poo often becomes part of cheNdu (bouquet) which is a very normal occurence. When someone doesn't have time / resources to prepare a cheNdu, they may very well treat others with poo itself - which is a very normal happening.

So, what is special in poo becoming a cheNdu? I'm confused. Obviously, in both these songs, the poo that becomes cheNdu is a female - so it could possibly have some other meaning

Knowledgeable folks please enlighten as to what is big about poo --> cheNdu

Unless someone had been listening to radio in the 80's (or travelling in buses or frequenting recording centers etc those days), they may not have much idea about this number. Believe me, by these parameters, it was a hit song those days (pavaLa maNiththEr mElE bhavani varuvOm was more popular but that one is most probably unknown to younger gen).

IIRC, it was for a low-bud Rama Narayanan kind of movie. The title was a rehash (nalla nEram was an MGR movie, they added nEram in front, from 'nilAkkAyudhu' song). The song's first line too was a rehash (from "eeramAna rOjAve" of iLamaikkAlangaL).

I couldn't find any youtube (very few web references for this song).

So, one has to listen to this link  or a similar link

Reading the pAdal varigaL once again, I doubt if the motivational lines are for a man to become a valiant fighter or anything like that

The following phrases suggest that someone who cannot perform "marital duties" is being motivated to acquire the necessary health :

-இரு கரம் என்னைத்தொட நீளாதா
-பெண்மை தினம் நாணும்படி
-நான் தாயல்ல
-தேகம் வலுவாகும் பொலிவுறும்

So, it's some low-bud family drama with some "chittukkuruvi lEgiyam" theme possibly...

Radio-only hit and was forgotten for a while and then the interest got revived thanks to tfmpage (Sureshji wrote about this song IIRC). Per discussion in SPB-IR thread , this could have been a dubbed one - imported from Telugu...director B Ravishankar (of EVK "fame").
 
If it was a Telugu import, then VM's writing is quite significant!

Yes, original in Telugu. But original'kum idhukkum situation wise sammandham illai. This is just like another poem written for the tune. Well done for sure, but not sure if it deserves credit because it was written for the tune from another original. Possibly first SPB+IR song for a Vijayakanth movie as suspected in the IR-SPB thread.. Very sweet song by the top-duet-pair of TFM. Let us look at the pAdal varigaL by VM:
