Apparently, Raja before starting his career did a few non-film albums
They were credited as Pavalar Brothers.

They have some Vinyl covers of lesser known Illayaraja Films (Padikkatha Pannaiyar, Muththu Engal Soththu, Meendum Parasakthi, Andha Sila Natkal, Ezhuthatha Sattangal, and some Ramarajan movies. I dont remember seeing these covers in this thread.

When Motherland pictures launched their second project, iLamaikkAlangaL, IR gave them laddoos. (I kept posting every now and then that R Sundarrajan was possibly the director when songs got composed and then ran away. The same had also been mentioned in a blog by a KH fan...world movies fan or something like that).
Either way, this disk cover does not mention any director, while listing a bunch of Kovai area film personalities, like Sirumugai Ravi etc. It was after the songs becoming huge hits that Manivannan was brought in, to build a story around it and release as a movie. And the movie was a moderate hit...
There's an interesting update on this movie, thanks to a twitter discussion between Chokkan & Rajini Rams.

Rajini Rams possibly got in touch with his "industry contact" (may be GA or VM) and got the answer for the movie's director at the time of composing :
Sirumugai Ravi.
(Yes, the same guy who directed rAgangaL mARuvadhaillai and IR gave nice songs to that movie too but IK was something phenomenal even by IR standards IMHO - especially pAda vandhadhO & isai mEdaiyil).

Today I found the Shree Meenakshi Stothram Vinyl record. Haven't got time to listen, attaching the cover pics. It doesn't allow me to attach the file (exceeds 0 KB !!!) hence the link. In the back cover IR looks divine !

Very good question - in my mind for quite long time as well.
Industry insiders can talk about this - any tech issues / budget issues / some production facilities not equipped kind of limitations...

On the #IR_Hit_History thread, a 1986 album called "AkrOsham" got polled and Anbu sir sent the vinyl covers for that dubbing movie (and included the cover of Telugu original as well)...
