Hindi film music - Old is Gold

Post  app_engine on Tue Nov 20, 2012 6:15 pm

AjA sanam (chOri chOri) has become one of my all-time fav songs...

The movie was a fun-ride too (with remote in hand to FF some other songs, of course). The "blowing off air on the hair" mannerism by Nargis was funnily impressive!

There's a color version of this song on youtube as well Shocked

Interestingly, the "coloring fellow" also explains the software that he used, in this youtube:

There seems to be also an "official" color version of the movie (by "ULTRA" that made the DVD)...

This is the "Ultra" color version of AjA sanam, on youtube - beautiful!

Some trivia about the actress / actor on this song:

Nargis Dutt :

-Wife of actor / Congress MP Sunil Dutt who co-starred with her in the famous "mother India" movie.

-Mother of Sanjay Dutt (munnAbhai MBBS etc), died of cancer before Sanjay Dutt made his debut in films

Raj Kapoor ("the show man"):

-Brother of Sashi Kapoor who acted as "second hero" to Amitabh in a few biggies

-Father of Rishi Kapoor who too acted as "second / third hero" to Amitabh in some biggies; hero of the famous film Bobby; acted with Kamal in sAgar etc

-Grand father of Kareena & Karisma, two famous heroines of HF industry

Let me start my account with one of my favorite song from my childhood days.

Lata ji and Shamsad Beghum ji singing Bachpan Ke Din Bhula Na Dena composed by one and only Naushad saab for the film Deedar (1951). The song (without looking at the visuals) tells us the journey behind. It tune flows flawlessly to the rhythm pattern. Even it looks free-flowing, the structure is so tight that you cannot alter an inch of it. Lata ji and Shamsad ji would have brought the innocence of the kids in their singing. And the climax, wonderfully done.

Another masterpiece by Naushad ji in the form of Palki (1967). Some outstanding songs. Here is one of them; Dil-e-betaab Ko Seene Se Lagana Hoga. Rafi saab's magic voice gel with romance and soul while we have a different female singer, Suman Kalyanpur (lost in time, but what an excellent singer) playing back for Waheeda. The sitar, sarangi supporting the vocals and bringing the lost melody world in front of us.

Actual film video, but clarity is little less.

Anil Biswas or fondly called as Anilda is a pioneer and responsible for sowing the seeds of hindi film music industry. When we hail our Maestro Ilaiyaraaja for using western instruments, but bending it to play our indian tunes in it, it all started during Anilda's days. He was the one of the main reasons for creating that trend and also deviated in bringing forward individual emotions when common values were the norm of the day. Here is a composition which I fondly remember always (thanks to DD and AIR) mainly due to same emotions which I mentioned above and also the song has a ghazal face to it. The other interesting thing about this song is two singers sang this one. Meena Kapoor (Anilda's wife) sang for Nargis on screen while there is another version by Lata ji.

Meena Kapoor's version

Lata's version

Which one do you like? Smile

Good to see someone digging out Deedar songs here. Naushad composed wonderful songs in this album. Listen to "Bachpan ke din bhula na dena" and soak in the sweetness of Lata's voice. For a lot of people, Lata Mangeshkar means the songs from 80s & 90s only. In reality, the best of Lata happened in 50s, 60s and 70s. Thats about it.

And what a fine composer Naushad was. Especially with his orchestral and choral elements.

Nice shares, V_Sji!

Your posts in this thread made me search for this one elusive song that a friend recently helped me to identify Smile

That Hindi song was sung by a (northie) classmate during college days and the melody did a "pachchak ottal" to my dil.

Though I didn't know anything else about the song, every now and then used to hum in "thaththakAram" style (nana-nA-nananA-nanEy-nA Laughing)

A few weeks back during a social gathering / chat, I talked about this elusive number and sang in that style to this Punjabi uncle. He immediately recognized it and told me the name of the movie! Smile Unfortuntely, I didn't do an immediate googe / youtube search and nothing happened.

Well, this morning I did a youtube search (since I knew the movie's name) and am playing it continuously since then!

"deewAnA huA bAdal" from kashmir ki kali Smile

Yes, that's a beautiful one. O P Nayyar's classic!. I like O P Nayyar mainly because of his audacity that he never worked with Lata, but with her sister Asha, yet came up with some everlasting compositions. Hindi film music world is a big big ocean from 30s till 70s and we will never get enough even if we dissolve ourselves entirely in that ocean.

Aakarash,
Please share your favorites. Smile

tasveer banata hoon tasveer nahi banti - Talat Mahmood from Bara-Dari (1955). I was waiting for this one, luckily got to see the video now. If Naushad ji's composition makes our eyes wet, Talat ji's singing makes us cry. The emotion and pain brought out by Talat ji is beyond any imagination. One odd wind instrument used by Naushad ji (don't know the name) which comes from nowhere and overwhelms us. One outstanding tune turned into a marvel by Talat ji. Please dissolve yourselves in it.

C Ramchandra classic from Anarkali (1953). One of the great music directors of all time. Breezy song! Songs like this established why yesteryear hindi songs have more depth when it comes to the melody. Lata ji as usual at her brilliant best!

Now deivakkuzhandhai sings the same song (but sad version). What do you feel about her singing? Smile

Song the night! When we talk of post-modernism in music, this composition cannot be ignored. Way back in 1951 C Ramchandra composed this with no support of technology. Hear the flute, horns, sweeping violins, western percussion, wonderful harmony, witty lyrics and a western melody all make it a song which is so ahead even now and will be for centuries. He sang himself along with Lata ji. What a graceful song!

Bholi Soorat Dil Ke Khote from Albela (1951).

aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe aankh se tumne giraa diyaa
mothi kisi ke pyaar kaa mitti mein kyon milaa diyaa

Salil and Talat whenever they join, we get a rare perl. Song full of deep emotions. After the dance portion, Salil and Talat captures the audience by bringing in a totally contrasting and deeply touching melody and lyrics (by Rajinder Kishan) which they never thought of. Hear the wavy violins at the start of the song. Violin crescendos and the lead to the charanams. One of the longest song of those times. We have only touched the tip of Salil's musical iceberg. More to come.

Re: Hindi film music - Old is Gold

Post  V_S on Mon Apr 29, 2013 5:52 am

Yesterday morning, car cleaning day as weather was fine, but still improving. Smile Randomly selected a CD from my car closing my eyes and selected this one. Whenever I listen to these songs, I remember my two uncles who were serving in air force and army who used to sing his songs and introduce many of his songs during late 70s and 80s Smile Whenever I listen to the songs, it visually takes me to the army camps at the borders where they relax and remember their wives and families listening to his songs.

Many thanks to my uncles, that's when I got deeply enchanted by his voice and singing. A voice like never before, deeply rooted and soaked voice of north which displays our identity clearly. Every word is clearly audible and the pronunciation is picture perfect. noteworthy I like all his songs from 50s and 60s (compared to his 70s and 80s) as he sang for some stalwart composers, but mostly hidden by other great talents of those days. This song is no meaner, as we skip forward to 70s where he got more recognition. I'd take this recognition for the passion he showed during 50s and 60s which got rewarded in 70s. He needs no introduction.

The way song carries forward is absolutely brilliant and amusing. What's more surprising is, the CD has got the conversation which is happening between husband and wife before the song starts. Very nice to hear Navin Nischol's voice (who died recently Sad) and their innocent conversation. YT does not have their conversation video, but it has got as an audio itself which is good.

R D Burman at his very best. noteworthy The way he used Kishore ji is ultimate. Hear the flow of the song and nice poetry which perfectly sits to the tune.

raat kali ek khwaab mein aayi aur gale ka haar hui
subah ko jab hum neend se jaage aankh tumhi se chaar hui...

Film video (without the conversation)

Shamshad Begum ji was one of the greatest playback singer of all time. Her pure and piercing voice can leave you baffled. You can hear lot of innocence in her voice. After her husband's death and Lata ji's arrival she kind of slowly faded away, but she continued singing till 70s, but sporadically. She was a priceless singer who had given some greatest hits not only commerically like today's hits, but musically too. Patanga, Babul, Mother India, Mr and Mrs 55, Aar Paar, CID, Bawre Nain, Baazi, Hamlog to name a few had some priceless songs from her. She recently died at the age of 94. 'filmigaane' had uploaded some of her top songs as a homage to her (on YT), which should not be missed. Starting from Mere Piya (Patanga) to Dar Na Mohabbat Kar Le (Andaz), 45 minutes of pure magic and unparalleled melodies.

Takes me to my favorite from Junglee: Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par Rafi oh Rafi. Gives a different emotion to "mohabbat" every one of the 6-8 times he sings that word.
