IR songs with 5 beat cycle - kaNda chApu songs - தக-தகிட - #14 விழியில் புதுக்கவிதை படித்தேன்

Post  app_engine on Thu Apr 13, 2017 11:22 pm

Time to start another thread and track all the songs with 5 beat cycle (tha-ka-tha-ki-ta) which is typically used in TFM for "rudhra thANdavam" style situations.

Well, IR has done for such typical situations as well as very soft love duets Smile

Let us explore and make another worthy list Wink

As before, here is a primer video:

#1 azhagu malarAda (vaidhEki kAthirundhAL)

அழகு மலராட அபிநயங்கள் கூட
(வைதேகி காத்திருந்தாள்)

Easiest sample that one can think of Smile

Well, probably one of the most popular 5 beat cycle songs ever in TFM.  Possibly the top in popularity from IR's kaNda chApu list.

Interesting to see that the #IR_Official_YT includes the name of Raghavendar in the singers' list! I used to often wonder who sings the "nattuvanAr" portion when I enjoy such portions in certain numbers. (e.g. thEr koNdu vandhavan of enakkuL oruvan). Most of us are aware who Raghavendar is but I'm listing some details here for those who don't know:

1. Also acts in this scene as Revathy's dad (youtube at the bottom)
2. Does another "music-connected" role in Sindhu Bhairavi, as the judge who loses to his car driver in a "rAgam identifying contest".
3. Wanted to become a composer himself but didn't click
4. Father of singer Kalpana who appears on TV reality shows (she won some big contest in Malayalam TV channel IIRC)

Here is the whole vaidhEki kAthirundhAL juke box in youtube, our current song is the 3rd in the list:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbidRaHhBW4

No need to highlight the fantastic, goose-bumpy singing by SJ. பல்லாயிரம் முறை பேசியும் எழுதியும் புகழ்ந்து தள்ளிய ஒன்று தான்!

ஜானகிக்கு ஈடு இணை யாருமில்லை!

Video of the song here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAOlIUwa0D4

Another oft-repeated info on the songs of this movie :

They got composed by IR without any inputs (situation / director / producer - none was involved in the conception. IR did them when he had some "break" while doing work for another movie).

R Sundarrajan put together a story / screenplay to include the songs and it became one of the biggest hits of that time period Smile

#2 mazhai varudhu mazhai varudhu (rAjA kaiya vachchA)

மழை வருது மழை வருது குடை கொண்டு வா
(ராஜா கைய வச்சா)

Another big hit number that readily comes to mind when one thinks of 5 beat thaka-thakita cycle!

Like I mentioned above, IR is not constrained by how a particular nadai is traditionally used Laughing From that rudha thANdavam to this sweet romantic melody song. Same 5 beat cycle but resulting in an entirely different taste / setting / sweetness (as opposed to the AkRosham that one would expect with the time signature).

Enjoy the sweet melody (though I'm not a big fan of the saraNam portion of this song Embarassed , IMHO doesn't match the awesomeness of the pallavi. Of course many others like it and that's why it is a big hit number. The end of saraNam connecting back to pallavi is as usual brilliant but portions of saraNam are what I feel "pedestrian").

#3 kalyANa mAlai koNdAdum peNNE (pudhuppudhu arththangaL)

கல்யாண மாலை கொண்டாடும் பெண்ணே
(புதுப்புது அர்த்தங்கள்)

Sweet and melodious number but the counting of beats and fitting to a nadai can easily play confusion in the mind Embarassed

Before I muse on the confusion, please feel free to enjoy this number yet another time :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5JJIuo4pEo

As one can easily see, right from the prelude we can count the "tha-ka-tha-ki-ta" pattern, making it a kaNda nadai quite easily. Why, even the lead instruments and background instruments play in that pattern.

However, if one is not careful (and paying attention to each of the beat) there is this possibility of lazily classifying this as #IR_waltz Embarassed That is, if one adjusts the mental counting to count the first "tha" a little bit strongly (as it happens in many western songs) and make "ki-ta" relatively rushed, we can end up counting this song as "thakkita-thakkita" Laughing

I mean incorrectly.

That is why it is tricky Smile

#4 pArththa vizhi pArththapadi (gunA)

பார்த்த விழி பார்த்த படி
(குணா)

This one is pretty straight forwards, of course! Easy to identify the tha-ka-tha-ki-ta in a reasonably slow pace Smile

The song is very popular and is part of the gunA juke box in the #IR_Official_YT below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0N6i-hXroo

This album should serve as a good answer to people criticizing IR for simbly following pallavi-saraNam-pallavi structure! This song is a quintessential example as an otherwise single (and so are a couple others in the above youtube)!

The song's picturization had been a big fav among HCKHFs (Drunkenmunk has covered it extensively in one of his blog posts).

Let us get that youtube here as well:

#5 ichchendRu ichchenRu muththam (enakku nAnE neethipathi)

இச்சென்று இச்சென்று முத்தம் பதிக்கும்
(எனக்கு நானே நீதிபதி)

Before doing some other popular numbers in the 5 beat cycle, picked this number as a "Friday thingy" Laughing

BTW, I don't know if this song was popular in TN or not. Only recently I became familiar with this song thanks to raajafm.com !

Here is the video, which does not have the prelude and some part in the end :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFEJ25gTiN4

One needs to listen to the prelude to fix the "5-beat-cycle" without any question and hence let me post the "audio-only" link below as well :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNqiitI_alc

Nice song!

#6 adhikAlai nilavE (uRudhi mozhi)

அதிகாலை நிலவே அலங்காரச்சுடரே
(உறுதிமொழி)

What a beauty this 5-beat-cycle sweet number is!

This song was a "later-catch" for me, in the sense I didn't know the existence of it in 1990 when it arrived Embarassed

Years later (in Y2K or after, months after I got my first car - that Tata Indica) I got this "IR-tablA-hits" from a tiny store in Palakkad and the collection was full of absolute gems. Many of them were "intro's" to me Embarassed I wasn't actively following ALL IR albums in 90-95 time frame and missed out on many gems like this one for a while.

RajsMed has hosted the song in youtube with stereo audio & decent quality (not sure if they had stereo audio on movie reels in that time period)!

#7
meettAdha oru veeNai (poonthOttam)

மீட்டாத ஒரு வீணை
(பூந்தோட்டம்)

One of the IR songs that caused so much of excitement in tfmpage those days.

The director of this movie, Kalanjiyam, started with IR in a time period when it wasn't perhaps fashion anymore for a youththu newcomer to start with IR Smile

His first film poomaNi was successful, with some hit songs as well, and he continued with IR for another 3 movies. (While IR continued to give him nice songs, the movies were progressively less successful and after nilavE mugam kAttu, he left IR and subsequently into oblivion).

This song is of course a classic - with reethi gowlai (hopefully I am correct) and terrific rhythm arrangements - including the 5 beat cycle.

Here is a good quality audio, hosted by none other than our Drunkenmunk on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5RrzYLCBs8

For those interested in video of the song, please check this out (Murali / Devayani):

alai meedhu viLaiyAdum (kAdhal kavidhai)

அலை மீது விளையாடும் இளந்தென்றலே
(காதல் கவிதை)

Another song that received considerable attention in tfmpage.com discussions (being a late 90's number).

Fantastic composition - though short in length. Bhavadharini is given the opportunity to be part of this number.

Fortunately didn't suffer picturization. However, it was during this time period that any song without video won't get attention because of the dominance of TV channels and this song received less attention compared to other (relatively ordinary) ones from this movie.

Here is the youtube from the company that released the audio (quality not great Embarassed )

poovAy virinju (atharvam, Malayalam)

பூவாய் விரிஞ்ஞு
(அதர்வம்)

Terrific song, listen to the thaka-thakida being played in violin in the second interlude Smile

Most readers of this forum probably know that IR didn't bother about payment for this movie / album, as confirmed by Dennis Joseph who directed this movie.

Such terrific songs as this one and 'puzhaiyOraththil pooththONi' for free!

And today cheap fellows comment on the web that this man is only after money (to send legal notice) Sad

Here is the audio-only youtube for OK sound quality:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vt7p6Uhkrc

The video youtube has some half million hits which is not bad for an old MF song...(the songs were big hits in KL when arrived and I watched the movie in theater Embarassed )

#10 thaNNeerkkudam koNdu (sakkarai thEvan)

தண்ணீர்க்குடம் கொண்டு
(சக்கரை தேவன்)

From some collection this song came into the van's HDD but I never liked the song Embarassed OTOH, I simply love the 7-beat-cycle number from the same album (manjaL poosum manjaL poosum).

The song's time signature, however, is interesting. Can't say what prompted IR to award two rhythm specials to one single album. This must be a rare case of an album to have both 5 beat cycle and 7 beat cycle songs. (#IR_Waltz and 4/4 are pretty much common and occur in almost all albums with only rare exceptions).

Simple melody, only interludes are somewhat rich - otherwise minimal orch kind of song that may not be the delight of a typical IRF - but give it a listen, some may like it.

App sir, thanneer kudam is one of my favorite songs.  I like the simple layout plus the ghata singari (that is the instrument I think) sounds beautiful and appropriate for a thanneer kudamm like sound!

#11 kaNNiraNdil EtRi vaiththa (avathAram)

கண்ணிரண்டில் ஏற்றி வைத்த நெய்விளக்கே
(அவதாரம்)

I had a chance to only listen to 'aridhAraththa' song when the movie came out, thru radio that reached Palakkad. That way, missed out on the grandeur of the album all those days. Only in the new millennium I got introduced to the phenomenon called 'thenRal vandhu theeNdumpOdhu' even Embarassed

Now of course, this album is rated among the top few among ALL of IR's works! (Since KR worked as the arranger for this album, I won't hesitate to say this one is his best contribution to TFM so far!)

As for playback singing, with this album, IR confirmed his place in the IFM hall of fame - among all those all-time-greats!

This song is a female chorus kind of song, a short one, clearly in 5 beat cycle (one website reported this as a misra chApu song and that's when I came to know of the existence of it. Of course, not #IR_misrA - the initial confusion got cleared by Drunkenmunk at that time).

Enjoy the sweet number in reasonable sound quality, along with other fantastic numbers of this album :

(தாண்டவக்கோனே)

This song is yet another raajafm.com intro to me. The singer is that "pAvam" fellow who sang iLangAththu veesudhE Wink (Sriram)

Nice melody but IMO the singer is not a fit to the theme of the song - thus it falls flat - this one needs some "rustic" kind of singing.
(Best fit would have been IR obviously, is there a track version for this? Laughing )

Well, there's no question about the thaka-thakita time signature, that was the first thing I noticed in the song when it got played Smile

I could not find a youtube link - but there are quite a few MP3 links on the net :
http://download.tamiltunes.com/songs/__P_T_By_Movies/Thandavakone/Enna%20Pol%20-%20TamilWire.com.mp3

Enjoy!

#13 pArththAlE theriyAdhO nOkku (sri rAghavEndrar)

பார்த்தாலே தெரியாதோ நேக்கு
(ஸ்ரீ ராகவேந்திரர்)

Except for a brief portion in the saraNam where the thALam switches to 4/4 (thakadhimi-thakajunu), the song is predominantly 5 beat cycle.

I've not heard this before raajafm.com Embarassed Even when I heard it on their transmission, didn't specifically look for the thALa nadai but was finding just the lyrics amusing (+ the wickedness in the voices of the females).

The thaka-thakida info is picked from the hub thread that talked about IR songs in different thALam. Well, this has to be documented in this thread anyways - regardless of the source of information Smile

Once can say the song is mildly inspired from the old hit "theerAdha viLaiyAttuppiLLai"

Listening to the Manorama song makes me think that IR deliberately used 'theerAdha viLaiyAttuppiLLai' as a reference and made a "spoof" version off of that. That is, the pallavi / beginning.

Of course, with some of his orch punches in the interludes! The saraNams are obviously typical IR stuff - with no reference to the Bharathiyar song.

Since we've been talking about some less-known songs, want to add a hit song  Smile

However, this song is not totally 5 beat cycle. Only the "prelude" of a super hit song. That way, I won't put a serial number to this song. Just as some spice to this thread.

It is the "anbE un pAdhamE suprabhAtham" comical stull by VM - that portion is thaka-thakida!

I heard this song from 1987 a few times on raajafm.com sometime back but didn't know the name of the movie. Also, even the first line didn't stay in memory and thus could not search for the song (even though I knew it was a "kaNda chApu").

Well, one of the MP3 CD's that I grabbed from a roadside gas station joint on Trichy-Chennai drive during the recent trip had the song (CD title "Mohan Hits" it seems Laughing )

Nice one to listen!

BTW, is raajafm.com still functional? It does appear on screen but songs do not play anymore on the phone Embarassed

I thought it was a popular song, though not as popular as the other 80s songs.

BTW, raajafm is getting phased out and will be shifted to the FM channel in the maestro's music app. The collections there may not be as big as raajafm.com, but we will be adding more in the days to come.

Yes, it makes more sense to channelize energy on the Maestro app!

Thank you and best wishes for all the great job being done on the App!
