புகைப்பட கலைஞர்கள் செய்தி சேகரித்தனர்.

மூணு பேரும் பத்மாக்களைத் திருப்பிக்கொடுத்து மய்யத்துக்கு எதிர்ப்புச்சொல்லலாமே?

In March last year, SPB and others were slapped with legal notices by maestro Ilayaraja for using his songs without his permission and seeking royalty. This led to an ugly spat between SPB and Ilayaraja. Experts said Ilayaraja was right in asking for royalty if he owned the copyright to his music.

Fellows should understand that the legal notice was to the concert organizer who should have made arrangements to pay. Since that fellow happened to be SPB's son, SPB twisted it with a FB post that he was wronged by vakkeel notice blA blA.

Either way, what way is that related to this news?

So, I'm doing an "annappaRavai" business in this kind of interviews, take what we want and don't worry much about other blA blA.

One thing he definitely corroborates is what had been told umpteen times by others before - IR's lightning speed in composing. ('தேனே தென்பாண்டி மீனே' ஒரு நிமிடத்தில் கம்போஸ் பண்ணினது) - what a genius IR is and what kind of average mortals he was / is "surrounded by" and had / have to work with

Another funny thing in that interview is when the reporter asks him about "mike Mohan".

Subconsciously Rengaraj starts as ""இசைன்னா எனக்கு ரொம்பப்பிடிக்கும் - அதனால எனக்கும் மைக்குக்கும் ..."  and then adds "மோகன் சாருக்கும்"

BTW, two of his movies that I've watched (unnai nAn sandhiththEn & udhaya geetham) had enjoyable Goundamani comedy tracks.

w.r.t. his association with IR, though he claims being part of "inner circle of IR" "IR did music for 15 out of 20 movies of my direction" etc , I'm reminded of a couple of things which was a big irritation to me those days.

1. Unlike most other assistants of Bharathiraja (Manivannan / Manobala et al) who signed up IR for their 1st movie with so much of priyam, this guy went to Shankar-Ganesh for his 1st movie. He came to IR only after a couple of films (possibly at the insistence of producers. It was definitely the producer Kovaithambi who insisted on IR for unnai nAn sandhiththEn as his Motherland pictures was the company that first did "iLaiyarAjavin innisai mazhaiyil" on posters and popularized that a major way.)

So, K Rengaraj was not an IR-loyalist to begin with and I didn't like it those days.

2. Later (in 1986) when Kovaiththambi was upset with Maniratnam, he got irritated with IR too - who recommended MR to him possibly.  The politician (was ADMK MLA for a while) unilaterally broke away from his cherished MD (who did fantastic albums and hit movies for him until then - பயணங்கள் முடிவதில்லை, இளமைக்காலங்கள், நான் பாடும் பாடல், உன்னை நான் சந்தித்தேன், உதய கீதம், இதயக்கோயில் - can any combo better that).

He knew none from the then TF field could be called a competitor to IR. So, brought down Lakshmikanth-Pyarelal to show off and prove "I'm not dependent on IR".

The so-called "IR's inner circle man who got such lovely albums from him".  The Kovaiththambi- Motherland pictures - K Rengaraj - Mohan combo showed their back to IR at that time. Maximum irritation for me then. எட்டப்பர்கள் என்று மனதுக்குள் திட்டி இருக்கிறேன்.

IR, however, didn't show any animosity to this fellow for that - as per history!
(Gems such as "கண்ணா உனைத்தேடுகிறேன் வா / இளஞ்சோலை பூத்ததா" were given to this same director, even after that "defection")

Watching it now, will give him the pass on that (the vistara interlude after Rahman comment) because I don't think Rangaraj was referring to the violin-tabla trope.  He was genuinely referring to Raja's confidence in operating in a rooted, very Tamizh context without ostentatious music. Thene Thenpandi Neeye is itself a good example of it. I really don't think Rahman is very comfortable operating like that.  He has to build up gigantic pop money moments in every song otherwise he's not confident of the melody's ability by itself to reach the audience.

Shaan, 45, on Thursday shared a black and white photograph of himself along with Illayaraja.

"Had the honour of singing two beautiful songs (in Marathi) for the legendary Illayarajaji," Shaan captioned the image.
