Not seen the whole thing yet...

Just saw the beginning (studio rehearsal) part - WOW - one of my MOST FAV. pieces of IR's work - the grand 2nd interlude of madai thiRandhu!

Wonderful to see IR conducting for that strings score!!

It is pretty obvious that the chorus is not delivering even 10% of the original Embarassed However, the orchestra is doing splendid job as usual.
App sir!  Yes, that is a fantastic rendering of an all time classic by the orchestra!  I just wish the interviewers had access to your IQ FOR IR thread!  We need intelligent questions please.

Because this is done on the FB platform is it possible for those members active on FB to link that thread (IQ FOR IR) in the comments section of the Arre video?  I think that would really help those organizers and lead to some productive interaction with out beloved Maestro.

Thank you very much Panniapurathar for sharing IR's recent FB interview. His devotional composition on Ramana Maharishi, "aRpudham aRpudham aRpudhamE" gave me a sweet surprise as it has almost the similar tune and sandham of one of my most fav early IR numbers "vasantha kAla kolangaL" which is a forgotten beauty of a song.

நின்னைச்சரணடைந்தேன் - another Deepa Ganesh article with IR reference Smile

http://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/beyond-appearances/article19911778.ece

One song having two versions is not uncommon to film music. Some of the all-time great melodies have had a male and female version, and at times in two different female or male voices… so on and so forth. Recently, a persistent ear bug took control of me: it was that intense rendition of “Ninnai Saranadandein” by Ilaiyaraja. The song is from the Tamil film Bharathi (2000) – which has some stunning compositions – set to Raga Pantuvarali. The song, a Spartan tune, and simple lyrics, gets its impact from its sustained, unadorned bhaava, and the attractive background score. The main melody is strictly Carnatic in its tenor, but the background score is modern and exegetic.

The song has a female version as well, rendered by the Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri. There is no modification as far as the tune is concerned. Both versions – by Ilaiyaraja and Bombay Jayashree – are similar. The question however is, if they are similar, and the tune remains unmodified, are they identical? While this is an important question, there are also other questions that arise in discussions among film music connoisseurs as to which version is better – the male or female? And why?
...
...
...
...
Music therefore, is beyond notations. It is impossible to ‘sing the notes’ just as it is superfluous to say ‘sing with expression’. The challenge for a musician is to match his self with the self of that piece of music which he has to render. In other words, to catch more than the meaning of the notation or the lyrics – his reflective self has to ‘see’ the essence. That is the moment in which music is born.

For Ilaiyaraja the song “Ninnai Saranadandein” is a journey to reach his vision, for Bombay Jayashri it is a Carnatic journey also. Hence, Ilaiyaraja sheds all entrapments to touch music in its barest form – in the process, he touches the naked self of the listener as well.

Soulful music is bare. It is a collision and subsequent disappearance of the self with the self-less. It is simple and grand, all at once.

What a terrific bass score for that pallavi anupallavi song!

"illyaraja" - அவர் பேரைக்கூட ஒழுங்காச்சொல்ல / எழுதத்தெரியாதவனுக்கெல்லாம் முதல் படத்துக்கு எப்படிப்பாட்டுப்போட்டுக்கொடுத்திருக்கார்.

இந்தப்படத்துக்கெல்லாம் எவ்வளவு சம்பளம் வாங்கினாரோ தெரியாது!

GKV's granddaughter:
http://www.deccanherald.com/content/639854/in-perfect-harmony.html

Calling her parents her first gurus, she says that they taught her the basics of classical music. It was her grandpa, the famed music composer of Kannada film industry, G K Venkatesh, who led her on into the world of playback singing. “When we would go to Chennai for holidays, we would accompany him to his studio where he used to arrange small bits and chorus for Ilaiyaraja. We used to sit there all day and watch them work their magic. Grandpa schooled me in the nuances of music, including the early morning riyaaz, basic jumping notes, the art of kirtane and more,” Vani explains.

lol, I came to this thread to post this video only.  Amazing that shorn of all the gamakams etc, it sounds like a piece of Celtic music from start to finish. Is Raja's music Indian music dressed up in Western clothes or Western music dressed up in Indian clothes?  The debate continues and maybe we will never know the answer.

Kettadhil pidithadhu...

I am sure some or more of the Maestro's fans would have known about this German number (ich liebe dich) that our man composed for Pudhupaatu (1990) but I did not know it till about a couple of days back!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDD1QrrUnsE.

I did not expect such a song for a Ramarajan film. But a simple google look up shows who produced this movie Smile and so no surprises here as there are no budget related or creativity related challenges when it comes to music for this producer!

Deepa Ganesh, again.

Even in an interview not directly connected, her IR-fandom mildly shows up:
http://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/music/the-raga-route/article20477204.ece

Do you personally believe that ensembles have a special power? Many musicians like Ilaiyaraja believe in the format of the ensemble. Many years ago, Pt. Ravi Shankar had also tried one at the India-Russia festival at Moscow, of course, they were all at a very large scale.

The teenager who impressed Ilaiyarajaa

At 19, the young filmmaker who grew up in Kattur, the village represented in Aramm, had managed to impress maestro Ilaiyarajaa so much with a story that the latter had agreed to compose music for his film. That had been the only condition laid down by the producer - "If you can convince Ilaiyarajaa, I don't have to listen to the story, I will produce the film."

The film was about a woman in a capitalist society who marries a man much older to her. With Ilaiyarajaa's nod, a budget of 13 lakhs was sanctioned. Khushbu was supposed to be the heroine and Chokkalinga Bhagavathar the hero.

But it was not to be.

This quote never gets old  Smile

சிரிச்சு சிரிச்சுக் கண்ணில் தண்ணீர்!
(Because of checking out some Smule videos in the following link)

Padithadhil pidithadhu.....Boss of Bass

http://sathishatnet.blogspot.in/2008/01/boss-of-bass-drilayaraja.html

I am a huge fan of the Maestro's bassline compositions and this article (old one and perhaps a few of us have already read it before) is a very good commentary mentioning a few of his fantasic bassline compositions.

I particularly liked the reference to "kurunila mannargal" while explaining about basslines in his composition which have their own domain within a song, but not overpowering the song by itself. What an apt word to describe it!

Glad that you like Maha's works. And yes he posts a lot of stuff that even HCIRFs might not have heard.

I had one such moment recently when I listened to the Maestro's German composition from "Pudhupaatu" nearly three decades after it was released!
