Though sometimes IR makes the remark that "I don't know how these tunes came - they just happened" (as in some of those college function Q&A sessions), most long term IRFs know that that was not ALWAYS the case.

I've pointed out earlier that there had been songs that strongly suggest "planning and design" - rather than spontaneous happening.

The most recent interview from his studio, after the stupendous success of the "remake" of MMKR song, kind of confirms this line of reasoning.

Viewers are hereby informed that IR had a reference - a popular thirukkuRAL - (#12 துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்கு
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை) and built the sandhams - effectively confirming that there was a "reference" or a "prior-plan" to arrive at the mettu.

Let us collect all such songs here in this thread - where there was a plan (reference / inspiration etc). There had been multiple statements by IR himself / Kamal / SPB / GA and such close associates or other "obvious" references (such as "I met Bach in my house ...And we had a talk")

You caught the point exactly - with that "vAn meedhilE" being the reference for "vA veNNilA". (Of course, it was "planned" by IR but mettu itself was by MSV).

Let us collect such examples where the melody (or some main ingredient) for a song is obtained by using a reference!

While he had only tweeted that idea, my mind was actually playing it i.e. when I was listening to the ichchenRu ichchenRu song for the Pulamaippiththan thread, the same thirukkuRal (#12 துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய) started playing in my mind

Like I mentioned in the disclaimer, this is NOT to say that IR did indeed plan these songs with the said thirukkuRaL in mind - but we are free to imagine that way

Though Kamal has possibly told this only once (and may be written about it), people has discussed umpteen times - some even calling the fantastic song as an "inspiration"

Anyways, this is a classic case of someone giving a "reference" to IR and there had been a "plan" or "design" that resulted in a mettu

One can definitely feel the inspiration in the prelude (that "lalalA lalalA lA lA lA lA" chorus, specifically) from the old MSV-TKR classic. So, this is an "inspiration" or "reference / plan" that IR himself disclosed to the director (and otherwise none would have known)

Keeping market given titles to others aside, here is a composition (cannot call it a "song") that IR himself called "Mozart I love you" - obviously acknowledging the inspiration and kind of dedicating to the WCM maestro!

One of the all-time-great musicals is "The sound of music". A non-Indian movie I've watched max number of times (whole or parts).

I believe this was one of the favorite movies / albums for mellisai mannar MSV.

We have reason to believe that IR too liked it very much. Let us see how

Portions of the Tamil movie "sathriyan" can be called as "inspired" from this all time classic.  

e.g. The hero character is a widower living with kids, unwilling to remarry. He has lost interest in nice things of life (such as music, for e.g.). The heroine "escapes" from whatever situation she was in, to land in his home. The children initially not liking the lady as a "baby-sitter" etc.

It is in a similar situation that Maria of the original movie sings "my favorite things" and the children ends up liking her / warming up to her.

This song from BM's Yathra (1985) is also an inspired version, but very different from My favorite things and IR's own Poottukkal pOttaalum. 

In fact, we end up singing this song even when we begin to sing the English song!  IR magic!!  Beautiful charanams, prelude and interludes that evoke some nostalgic feeling in the listeners, thus very apt for the situation in the movie.

This song also featured in the 2015 Malayalam movie "Joseph".

Having talked about IR's love for Mozart & Sound of music, we should not miss his MOST FAVORITE WCM composer - Bach (whom IR called "என் நாத தேவன் பாக்" in his sangeetha kanavugaL series on Kumudam...I was one of the privileged to read that thodar "sudachchuda" each week those days).
