Since we have come to year end, thought of having a poll on which songs you liked the most this year. I am leaving the best album aside as, NEPV will win hands down. If you don't think so, please let me know, I can add poll to the best album too. I know we don't have much members for this to be interesting/exciting, that's why I am keeping it multiple choice poll so that you can vote for the songs you like the most. Also, please write a few words on what you voted and why you like these songs compared to the rest. If I need to add any more songs to the list, please let me know.

Maestro has composed a total of 77 songs including the dubbed ones. If we exclude the dubbed ones, he has composed 42 songs (leaving out Dhoni (telugu), YEto VeLLipoyindi Manasu and MaranthEn MannithEn). Out of 42 songs, if I am able to list top 20 songs, it is something outstanding. Only soundtrack I didn't include in the poll is Mudhalvar Mahatma, as most of the songs are under 2 minutes. Even Prasad had two short songs. I wanted to include all songs of Mayilu, but not sure if that will be the popular choice of everyone. So, those songs which didn't make it to the poll didn't mean inferior, but not much popular among most IR fans as I understand.

I have voted for 16 songs. Very Happy My top soundtrack will be Dhoni, Mayilu, NEPV, Pudhiya TheerangaL considering the max. number of songs I like from each. This is a tremendous year for Maestro. Considering only these four soundtracks, two of them are based in city while other two are based in village. Even between DhOni and NEPV, we can see the vast difference in the score despite being city subjects. Same way between Mayilu and Pudhiya TheerangaL, we can clearly hear different villages even though they can be classified as folk, discounting the languages they were composed in. Just the tune will take to TN village in the former while taking us to the land of coconut trees in the latter. This is not new to Maestro, but I want to record this as the depth and details he sees in script/settings are clearly visible in the aural experience we get. It will never be generic as it is another city subject or another village subject. Most unfortunate thing nowadays is even with all the technologies and FM stations, unless it is promoted, these compositions never reaches the audience, NEPV being a clear case example. In no way DhOni, Mayilu or Pudhiya TheerangaL is inferior to NEPV, in fact I would even rate them (altogether) even slightly higher mainly for the nativity, earthiness and simplicity.

My votes went to:

1. Vaangum Panathukkum
2. ViLayatta PadagOtti
3. YathE YathE
4. Maaripeeli Kaatre
5. Kaatrai Konjam
6. Mudal Murai
7. YennOdu Vaa Vaa
8. Sattru Munbu

I instinctively picked these 8 in the list there and now when I look at them - i fairly see why I picked them particularly. These are the songs in which I felt Ilaiyaraaja achieved that perfect balance between tunes, interludes, arrangements and choice of singers. In a sense, these songs are complete in all aspects. The songs that i did not pick - i guess i have some issue or the other with them.

Dhoni is a wonderful album anyway. My disappointment this year has been Gundello Godari. In fact, I rate Dhoni and even Puthiya Theerangal (with just 3 songs) high than GG because PT gave a more wholesome listening experience than a GG with every song (almost) having something thorn or the other.

All in all, 2012 was a good year. (looking forward to that Marathi film songs - Touring Talkies).

Best Song of the Year (2012) Empty Raja's best this year

Post  mythila Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:53 pm

For IR, Last year ended with 2 fabulous songs from Snehaveedu, the soothing Yaman Kalyani based "Amruthamaay" and the innovative Sriranjani flavoured "Chandrabimbathin".
The year 2012 began with a very optimistic note with the "live" orchestra being brougt back as if to satisfy the long yearnings of his fans in Prakash Raj's "Dhoni".
The best songs of my choice are the "viLaiyAttA padagOtti", simple , uncluttered , yet endearing interludes and apt vocal support by Shreya. Then I was quite excited to hear the old Turk sing for Raja in Tamizh after perhaps a decade in "Vaangum panathukku". While the singer proves his still intact youthful zest , Raja always acknowledges and runs along with his uber cool guitars.
If this is not enough, GVM's FIRST EVER collaboration with Raja sent speculation, expectation sky high for NEPV. While Raja's brand flag is flying high ever since its hoist in Sep 2012, it remains to be seen if GVM's can match up to his music.
So in NEPV, as in the other poll, "KAtrai KONJAM",and "SAindhu sAindhu" are my darlings. "kAtrai konjam" is like an eighties hit song of Raja. I mean, not so much musically, but in the universal likeability aspect. I am yet to come across someone dismissing this song that brims with joy and excitement. Raja hsould have been in the most benevolent mood to dish out such super rich orchestration wrapping around a chocosweet tune.
"sAindhu sAindhu" - Despite Yuvan, a laid back romantic delight , eric clapton like guitar, sax, oboe each giving an experience of cherishing those special moments in life.
These songs beg for SPB and I cannot forgive Gautam for not insisting on SPB Sad

Thaavi thaavi - After all the dust has settled - there is an undeniable charm and grace in a Maestro - soft melancholy songs that are not found in any other genre. So all that complex orchestration and grandeur simply melt away before the soft gruffy grandfatheresque voice of Raaja pointing us to the beacon of hope on the horizon on a difficult sojourn through a rough sea. Also the interludes of this song (both of them) stand on their own - not reminding us of any other song that came before. I rank it above all the NEPVs of the world.

True words! Was listening to all the songs in this poll, and Thaavi Thaavi immediately brought tears in my eyes - easily the best song for me - his voice, man, his voice..
