Perils of being a choreographer to IR's songs Empty Perils of being a choreographer to IR's songs

As my close associates of the last few years come from Punjabi background, many social gatherings in recent years had dancing as a necessary ingredient with bhAngrA as mainstay. (One old man from the group happened to be the first-ever president of Michigan Sikh society and was head of a bhangra team that traveled all around).

Honestly, I'm not a fan of such loud music & the 4/4 boring rhythm beats but enjoy the association of some of the nicest people I've been around with - and thus had been pushed into dancing with the gumbal (end up walking in circles with raising hand pointing a finger to sky and then dropping to shoulder level, in rhythm with the beats Laughing ).

Quite often, I'll be asked to play some "south indian" song to which the group can dance and that proves to be my moment of total confusion / being lost each time Sad

Well, most of the time my kid will grab the opportunity to have her way and play some selfie-puLLa kind of idiotic number to which the group will happily dance, making me rush to a corner of the hall - wondering why I'm here Laughing

The reason for me getting lost is the unfortunate fact that most IR songs that I like are not "that friendly" to choreograph, for such groups Embarassed.

I mean, they are not like bhangra, where every one can keep dancing without much effort for the whole song. I normally attribute this phenomenon to "IR-getting-bored-like-me" to unchanging beats.

Musing on this line led me to wonder how would have the movie choreographers felt - when they had to do their job for IR songs. Especially when they knew that most of the lead actors / actresses weren't great dancers or the milieu itself was horrible plus pressures from director / producer to accommodate group dances / settings / disti wishes / fan wishes etc.

On top of all those, IR gave them really complex music, with continuously varying rhythm patterns / changes.  Coupled with lyrics that are hardly inspiring.

Let me pick some songs where the job of dance master could have been a nightmare.

Before I dwell into the details of why this must be a terror for the stunt / dance master, let me list some terrific / terrible things about this number Smile

- New find for me, listened to it for the first time only this week and currently on "repeat" (possibly heard before but never paid attention; happens to be in the MP3 CD that also contains the "guNdu onnu vachchirukkEn" number that I wrote about in the current song thread last week)

- Mano song where he struggles as usual but SJ is phenomenal and more than compensates for him Smile  One has to write a whole article about SJ's singing in this number!  Whoever listens to this number has to pay close attention to her giggle in the pallavi between saraNams Wink WOW - whatta singer!

- The song's boss is of course "bass". I'm not technically qualified to write about it - but please listen to just the bass leaving out everything else in this song and you're sure to fly!

- The brass section is typical IR - fantastic. So are the synth sounds! Listen to the keyboard atrocity towards the end of second interlude and also the "elephant trumpeting" like sound that comes in the background during saraNams - OOW

- kuppai lyrics (by Piraisoodan) - ராஜா-ரோஜா, ராணி-மேனி, மந்திரம்-தந்திரம், தத்தை-மெத்தை-வித்தை etc. are all he could offer & these must have been repeated 1000 times in TFM

- My most fav part of the melody is for anupallavi - so sweet : "நேரம் நல்ல நேரம் - தென்றலோடு நீ பாடு / காலம் நல்ல காலம் - கைகள் கோர்த்து நீ ஆடு"

Please listen to the audio in decent quality in the following link (the MP3 in the CD is awesome):

Now you know the song - some who had seen the video can possibly get the horror images of Prabhu-Gauthami-Group dance haunting their minds Laughing (For this post I checked out Embarassed )

Now, let me get into the shoes of choreographer (don't know who did this movie) and empathize... Wink

(Listens to the second interlude)

Try dancing this "kAdhalukku rAjA" song from rAjA kaiya vachchA movie, in a "social-gathering-group-dancing" situation in real life!

Laughing

Guaranteed disaster!
(Even for a so-called dance number like mArugO-mArugO, one will end up like this! Compare that with a simple Punjabi bhangra now)

Quintessential example for this thread :
https://twitter.com/Kamaladdict7/status/925588963313643520

It is funny that someone is slAgichchifying the absurd and dismal picturization of one of the most wonderful instrumental pieces of TFM. (No offence meant to KH who is doing some great moves / acrobatics etc.)

#IR_Waltz, not easy to dance on screen Smile
