SPB's "pre-IR" TFM songs / status - only 191 could be found!

Some websites (e.g. inbaminge.com / palanikumar.com) and some tfmpage posts (mostly by one Priya) list the song "enakkoru udhavi sey madiyinil idangodu kaNNE kaNNE" as another SPB song from this Ayiraththil oruththi (1975).

OTOH, the same inbaminge site also lists the song under kAlamadi kAlam (1977) with VB as MD.

I tried to quickly scan the Ayirathil oruthi movie on youtube and didn't find the song. So, skipping it from this thread.

If we hear from someone that it was from AO movie, we can include in the list later.

This too doesn't look like a "reliable" source to authenticate

The problem with V Kumar / Vijayabaskar kind of 70's music is there's simply no signature stuff that I can use to distinguish
(KVM was easier to identify )

Honestly, going by those superb articles on dhool.com (e.g. V Kumar series), if there is no book written by Saravanan sir yet, it's a big loss to TFM!

It's not just googling kind of data he carries with him (which is what net-collector-fellows like me do all the time )...he even verified many details with someone like Mrs Swarna Kumar (wife of late V Kumar, TFMD)! Such connections are invaluable and such "field work" (kaLappaNi) brings info otherwise unavailable and Saravanan sir is acclaimed for that!

A book by Saravanan sir, on rare facts of TFM (or any other specific TFM theme) should be a treasure, IMVSO! And I'm very sure it won't be simply a collection of facts - it will also have the structure of a quality literature (poem quotes and what not)!

As in 1976, in 1975 too Kamal-SPB combo enjoyed songs from many MD's. We've already seen a song by V Kumar and now next is from Kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathan.

KV did the most unusual thing expected from a classical vidwan, of composing a western song, that too mostly in English that marked the debut of Usha Uthup in TFM , in mEl nAttu marumagaL.

The girl with Kamal on the video is his "then-lover, later-wife, now-ex" - Vani Ganapathy. He started dating her during this time period and dumped actress Sri Vidya it seems, if the bio of the actress is to be believed. Well, kAdhal iLavarasan illaiyA? Even in this movie, he had Jayasudha as heroini for him, in addition to the nAttiyakkAri...

ada, ada, ada! What a song!

This is an all-time-fav number for me. Actually, this was  the MOST-PREFERRED-TFM-SONG for me prior to the arrival of Ilayaraja! ரொம்ப, ரொம்ப, ரொம்பப்பிடிக்கும்!

I didn't know the lyricist or the MD those days but instantly felt a strong sensation with this song and from the first listen, SPB became my top favourite! The song's attraction hasn't come down a bit - even after almost 40 years and 100's of listens!

SPB thoroughly enjoys the song - especially when he comes back to the pallavi after each of the saraNams! S-G has to get special praise for the nice arrangements / chorus and the catchy tune! (Of course, they do their characteristic repeat of 1st interlude as the 3rd).

The pallavi, anu pallavi, saraNam - all three are catchy! The rhythm is racy and everything falls in place nicely - but it is SPB who owns this song! என்ன ஒரு லயிப்பு, துள்ளல், இளமை - எல்லாம்!

I reiterate, easily the top TFM song for me from the pre-IR era!

Another rare song from a 1975 Kamal movie - this one too a SPB-VJ duet. First time listen for me - SPB even talks some dialogs in-between, with two modulations for the word "rape"

Nothing much can be authenticated on MD / lyricist - except for the information on the web here and there. Only thing that is clear is Kamal being the hero and veNNiRa Adai Moorthy being the "script writer" for this movie :brrrr:
(This is based on a VA Moorthy interview available on youtube)...

Websites also say Manjula was the heroine, which should have been remarkable, considering she was MGR/Sivaji level heroini in 70's. Was it the only movie Kamal did with her?

The Manjula in Maali Sooda Vaa is not the MGR/Sivaji Manjula. This one was known as 'Kannada' Manjula. She also acted in Pudhu Vellam along with Sivakumar.

Btw, the MGR/Sivaji Manjula shared screen space with Kamal in Sathiyam. In the movie, Kamal loves Jayachitra, but forced to marry Manjula.

Perhaps the most famous SPB song of pre-IR times when MGR-Sivaji numbers are not taken into account.

The disk was in my school and got played out frequently on many occasions. The song was attempted by many students in all kinds of 'pAttuppOtti' programs of those days. The mimicry was a big matter of thrill for most kids of that generation!

SPB does an elegant job of this sweet composition. There has to be special mention of the "story-telling-lines" by kavingar. MSV (as usual Joseph Krishna udhavi, as per the titles) had one of his biggest hits for KB with this number. Per Saravanan sir's articles on V Kumar, who and KB started together in 60's, other MDs started composing for KB after there was a ladAi between the two friends during "arangEtram" time period.

Now when VK came to know of KB’s displeasure, it was too late to go back on his word. He set about composing music for Collector Janaki, but ensured the tunes were not recycled from iru kOdugaL. He came up with some refreshing songs for Collector Janaki.

However, it is said that just at the exact timings of his schedule for Collector Janaki, KB would summon him to work on arangEtRam. This happened quite a few times. And while VK could accommodate KB’s wishes most times, on a few occasions he expressed his inability to break away from his work immediately to attend to the simultaneously progressing work on arangEtRam.

This led to a few exchanges on either side, and VK never got to work with KB ever again

Thus the two friends, who had earned fame and fortune together, and had complemented each other’s brilliant efforts so far, parted ways now, never to meet again. They were not even in talking terms till VK’s demise in 1996.

In any case, we had seen KB work with a lot of MD's after his split with VK, including MSV for some memorable albums / movies. AOT was definitely one and this song is iconic :

App...I have a pix of my dad and his best friend Uncle Idrus (great example of Hindu/Muslim relationship...but that is for another day) singing this on stage (dad handles softer voice while my uncle handles rougher one...so in this part, dad took on KJY...later they did Nalai Namathe, where Uncle Idrus took on TMS and dad got his break to sing SPB part)....

...anyway...good point, good point. Early days looked down on SG blokes...and then Deva arrived and I thought SG was waaay better....

Yarumillai ingge....one of those early days favourite in the family...
...who cares about Sivakumar....we kids always imagine all SPB songs with Kamal or Rajini, ambudutheyn...until the realities set in as we grew up watching the actual films the songs were set in...the horror...the horror...the horror...(yes, even my beloved NT is involved). But thank god for my parent's taste...these will live on and, of course, no questions, I am going to goddam impose it to my junior.
