Talk about Balu’s legacy and one can’t help but mention the tale of the viewfinder which has become part of Tamil cinema folklore. Subrata Mitra, Satyajit Ray’s cinematographer handed over a viewfinder to Balu in recognition of his talent. When Bala made 'Sethu', Balu was so impressed that he handed the same viewfinder to his pupil. Bala, in turn, handed it over to Ameer when he saw 'Paruthiveeran'. It appears as though this viewfinder is tracing a new path for Tamil cinema.

Award winning film director and cinematographer Balu Mahendra, whose masterpieces such as 'Azhiyatha Kolangal', 'Moondram Pirai', 'Veedu', 'Santhiya Ragam' and 'Vanna Vanna Pookal' left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry, died in Chennai on Thursday. He was 75 and is survived by his wife and son.

பாலு மகேந்திரா என்னும் திரைப்படக்காரரை ஒரேவரியில் அவ்வாறு வகுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம். அழகு என்னும் போதையைப் பின் தொடர்ந்த மனிதர். எல்லா வகை அழகுகளுக்கும் முழுமையாகவே தன்னை அடிமையாக்கிக் கொண்டவர். அதன் அலைக்கழிப்புகள் ,வருத்தங்கள், எக்களிப்புகள், தியானங்கள் அனைத்தும் அவருக்குக் கைகூடியிருந்தன.

நடிகை மௌனிகாவுக்கு ஒருவழியாக தன் கணவர் மறைந்த பாலு மகேந்திரா உடலைப் பார்க்க அனுமதி கிடைத்தது. அவர் இன்று காலை நேரில் வந்து கணவர் உடலைப் பார்த்து கதறி அழுதார்.

திரைமேதை பாலு மகேந்திராவுக்கு திரையுலகினர் அஞ்சலி

Seeking an escape from his mundane reality in Ooty, Cheenu seeks a trance, a dream-like state when he comes to Madras. In a moment of empathy or love, he takes a captive amnesiac back home, to his world, where he wants to perhaps preserve her as a painting, as a masterpiece. Where he wants to keep her not as much as an individual, but as a muse.

This imagery of an artist’s obsession with his muse was painted most disturbingly in Pedro Almodovar’s recent film, the monumental The skin I live in. Cheenu’s attraction toward her is a bit similar to that of Almodovar’s doctor for his creation. In fact, the scene where the doctor (Antonio Banderas) kills the intruder for trying to desecrate his masterpiece has shades of the one in Moondram pirai where Cheenu bashes the neighbourhood molester, almost killing him.

Throughout the narrative, a sense of uncertainty lurks in the viewer’s mind, the exact kind of uncertainty we get while dreaming. The knowledge that the spell would break any time. That Cheenu would be thrown back into his solitude. And that the fall from this ethereal tranquillity would be brutal, maybe even fatal.

மிக அருகில் நின்று தன் பார்வையாலும், பழைய நினைவுகளாலும் அவரை அருந்துகிறார். தன் அருகில் நிற்பவர்களின், சலசலப்பு, விசும்பல் ஒலி, மரணத்தின் வாசம் எதுவும் அவரை அப்போது ஒன்றும் செய்யவில்லை. பின்னோக்கி, காலத்தின்முன் கைப்பிணைத்து நின்ற இரு நண்பர்களின் நினைவுப் பகிர்தல் அது. ஜாதி, மதம், இனம், தேசம் எல்லாம் கடந்து, இருவேறு திசைகளிலிருந்து வந்து கலையால் இணைந்த இரு மனங்களில் ஆத்மார்ந்த அஞ்சலி அந்நிமிடம்.

‘‘ஸ்டோர்க் வந்து இருபது நாள் விஜயாவுல படுத்திருந்தேன் பவா. என் அறைக் கதவு அசையும் போதெல்லாம் இரு நண்பர்களின் வருகைக்காக மனம் ஏங்கும். அது ஒரு இயலாதவனின் எதிர்பார்ப்பின் உச்சம்.

இருவருமே நான் டிஸ்சார்ஜ் ஆகிறவரை வரவேயில்லை. அது அவர்களிருவருக்கும் என் மீது பரிவில்லை, அக்கறையில்லை என்பதல்ல. கலைஞர்களின் வாழ்வு அப்படி. விஜயா ஆஸ்பெட்டலுக்கும், பிரசாத் ஸ்டுடியோவிற்கும் நூறடி தூரமில்லை இதில் பிரச்சனை, மனநிலை. ஆனால் நான் ஆஸ்பத்திரியிலிருந்து நேராய் ராஜா வீட்டுக்குத்தான் போனேன். அவன் என்னைத் தழுவிக் கொண்டான். அந்த ஸ்பரிசம் வேண்டியே போனேன். அவன் உடல் சூட்டை எனக்கு அக்கணத்தில் கடத்தினான். போதுமெனக்கு’’

இதோ ராஜா, தன் நண்பனின் சூடில்லாத உடலை ஒருமுறை சுற்றி வந்து கால்மாட்டில் நின்று கையெடுத்துக் கும்பிடுகிறார். பேரமைதி தவழ்ந்த அக்கணத்தை எல்லோரும் விரும்பினோம்.
