Nalla Samsaaram Vaaithadhadharkku from Maamiyaar Veedu is an excellent thaalaattu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UCI0LKBclG0

PS: The act of love making and the bearing of a child in the first charanam is pwnage lyrics from Vaali.

Lyrical florusih with mOnai nayam, iyaibu and inserting what can be dicey like a thread inside a needle. Lovely stuff from Vaali. The tune from IR is excellent too, lilting us to a lovely sleep, as the couple lilt their kid to a sleep in the second charanam (which also has some lovely lyrics) aided by some top class rendition from SPB and SJ throughout the song. What a song! A pity it isn't heard often.

This is probably a difficult playlist to put together as there will be simply 100's of songs Embarassed

For e.g., even in a "brass-section-band-vAththiyam-dominated" number like 'seevi sinukkeduththu', there is lovely shehnAi (albeit brief) in the conclusion of the first interlude (1:34 to 1:44):

So, it will be a big talk to catalog ALL shehnAi pieces in rAsA scores Smile

However, it will be a very sweet exercise!

Please hear the second interlude of this song. I was about to make fun of the hero playing the flute instead of the shehnai. I realized that Raja uses both the flute and the shehnai together briefly. A very unusual combo.

"KANNA VA" reminds me of another shenai based classic, "azhagu malar Ada"/
The shenai passage in "Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE" got as much popularity as the song itself

Wonderful choice for the next playlist.

Do Anything from How to Name It. The Shehnai towards the middle of the song(starting at 2:46) totally changes the soundscape expressing the emotion of a fulfilling happiness. Until then I was used to only shehnai expressing sorrow.

Though shehnAi is not the mainstay of this song, it makes a terrific impact in the end of third interlude (uchchi vagundheduththu):

Re: IR Musical Playlists - Bordeaux 20

Post  V_S on Sat Apr 26, 2014 12:35 am

Another playlist struck me like a flash when I was listening to one of the quiz songs. We have listened to many duets with much variety. We have listened to many female solos with variety of moods. How about a perfect love duet, but only female sings? The same with male solos (as duets) are also plenty. This excludes all erotic, club dances, lullabies, making fun of him etc. in female solos. This also does not include something which hero does not reciprocate. There are also tons of female solos where heroine thinks of hero (who is not with him or not reciprocating or some misunderstanding) and sings which is also not part of this playlist. There is a subtle variation. Even if there is no reciprocation, if the visuals of the song does not go back and forth from reality to dreaming scene, it is fine, because as a visual, we don't see that she is thinking of him.

I have listed a few. Again this playlist is mostly derived out of youtube videos to see if the situation/visuals matches the playlist. There are many songs for which I didn't get YT video, so can't comprehend on those. It is interesting to note not much situations like this are happening in film nowadays. This playlist shows the audacity of Maestro and this thinking to convert a duet to a female solo, but the lyrics and orchestration speaks about both the view point and not just her viewpoint. I thought it could be some four or five songs, I was stunned to say the least to see the list. Here is Raja's playlist of Duets as Female Solos

1. adadada maamarakkiLiyE (chittukkuruvi)
2. en raagangal (muthal iravu)
3. iru paRavaigaL (niRam maaraatha pookkaL)
4. darling darling darling (priya)
5. ondrodu ondraanom (anbukku naan adimai)
6. paalaruvi paadivaru (dhooram arike)
7. enthan kaNNil (guru)
8. entha poovilum vaasam undu (murattukkaaLai) (still not a complete duet as it almost sings from her point of view)
9. en nenjam unnOdu (rusi kanda poonai)
10. naan un thaayaaga vEndum (ullaasa paRavaigaL)
11. aanandha raagam (panneer pushpangaL) (but the song comes as a montage)
12. raasaave unnai naan ennithaan (thanikkaattu raaja)
13. naRumana malaRgaLin (urangaatha ninaivugaL)
14. pon vaanam paNNeer thoovuthu (indru nee naaLai naan)
15. uyirE uravil (mellappEsungaL)
16. naan unthan chellakkutti (mugaththil mugam paarkalaam)
17. pOttEnE poo vilangu (poo vilangu)
18. malarE malarE ullaasam (un kaNNil neer vazhinthaal) (but montage)
19. inimEl naaLum (iravu pookkaL)
20. sandhOsham indru sandhOsham (manithanin marupakkam)
21. chinna chinna vaNNakkuyil (mouna raagam)
22. Oh enthan vaazhivilE(unakkaagavE vaazhgiREn) not strictly
23. aaraarO (anand)
24. pagalilE oru nilavinai (ninaivE oru sangeetham)
25. raadha azhaikkiraaL (therkkaththi kaLLan)
26. aasaiyila paaththi katti (enga ooru kaavakkaaran)
27. poo pookkum maasam (Varusham 16)
28. thanneer kudam kondu (sakkarai thEvan) (not strictly though)
29. jaane do naa (cheeni kum) (montage)
30. kooda varuviya (mathiya chennai) (but only from her point of view)

31. vaanam thodaatha mEgham (chinappadas)
32. en kalyaana vaibOgam (azhagE unnai araathikkirEn)
33. dhaagam edukkira mEgam (enakkaaga kaaththiru)
34. poovE panippoovE (nilavu suduvathillai)

Thanks a lot Usha ji. I went through all these songs.
In machchaanai paartheengaLaa, Sivakumar is no where in the screen, so I left it out.
In veenai meettum kaigaLE, there is a sense of pensiveness. She is happy, but he is sad. Since they both go back and forth in their dreams and come to reality and it is not a happy duet, I left that too.
In sugamO aayiram, they already got married, so my first criteria didn't work. I see this is a kind of solace song she sings for her husband, and so many other activities like visitor coming to their house, neigbour listening to her singing all still makes it a solo song. Let me try to add what I was thinking yesterday, about the following song, which made me search in this criteria.

This song struck me like a lightning bolt today. I have listened to this song numerous times decades together, but I don’t know why it didn’t strike me at all. I know it is a song sung by Jency. It know it is a happy song. I also know it is a duet, but that’s where it struck me. How come a duet is sung only by a female and not by both? How did Maestro convert a perfect love duet into a female solo? How did this idea strike him? All these questions flashed across me today, thanks for bringing up this song.
If we listen closely, this is not a normal solo where heroine thinks of hero and sings when he is not around. This is not a normal solo where she sings in desperation about his separation or about his misunderstanding or a female solo where she makes fun of him. This is a perfect duet where both the hero and heroine are present (even if it is a dreamy song), but only heroine sings. The best part is she sings his part too. That’s the brilliance of Maestro and kaviyarasar. Through the first word itself; ‘இரு பறவைகள்’ kaviayarasar hits a sixer. There itself he starts the song on behalf of both the lovers instead of just a female perspective which many songs carry.
He substantiates further with இலை மறைவினில் இரு கனிகளும் அங்கே அங்கே கனிந்தன இது கண்கள் சொல்லும் ரகசியம் that it is a feeling of both the lovers and not a single one. Another highlight is it is not a montage song where someone sings on behalf of the lovers. The heroine sings for herself and for her lover.
Another lovely line where Kannadasan merges both their perspective into one:
எங்கெங்கும் அவர் போல நான் காண்கிறேன்
அங்கங்கு எனை போல அவர் காண்கிறார் (she goes inside his heart and sings these lines)
How in his world Maestro got the idea of featuring only Jency rather an male singer too to sing his lines? That’s where the audacity of the genius comes in. Kaviyarasar adds fuel to Meastro’s deep music appetite to make this song an extra-ordinary one by injecting some brilliant lines.
What to tell about the melody or Jency’s singing or the bass guitar or the chorus or the lead guitar or the tabla or the flute or the violins or the santoor or the triple bango or the solo violin-violin counterpoint or the guitar-flute counterpoint?
I will finish quoting two more brilliant pieces.
Did you year the train sound with chorus? Why? Nowhere train is seen in the video. Then why? That’s the inimitable and brilliant idea to imply that they are the same pair (Sudhakar & Radhika) who acted in kizhakkE pOgum rayil (an year before) which is based on the train theme.
This perfect western song is based on a perfect classical raagam called mOhanam. Maestro has rich history in his music encyclopedia for this raagam as he has composed more than 50 songs in this raagam, starting from kaNNan our kaikkuzhanthai to very recent raaja gOpuram in puthiya theerangaL. Rich delicacy.
How many ideas in just one song? Who else can do?

Thanks again Usha ji for your efforts.

I was debating myself yesterday about vaanam thodaatha mEgham. Initially Sathyaraj was not interested so I didn't go for it. Later into the song, I was not sure if he changed his mind or was it just a dream of her that they unite together. Neverthless it is good addition, I will add it.

In orE muRai un tharisanam, she is in search of a soul (who died) whom she loves singing a song. Still Karthik does not know this, so it is not a complete love duet, still a solo.
In siru kootula, first the song lyrics is about birds, nature and about music, nothing related to love. She just corrects his mistakes in singing and continues to sing. And at the time of the song, she is not in love with him, neither he I believe.

Same way I left sontham vanthathu vanthathu. It was a back and forth between her dream and reality. She thinks/recalls her good times with him, but he is never in the picture (even though he too loves her).
