Usha ji,
Thanks a lot again. You already got it, still I will try to explain. Normally in love duets, we see both the hero and heroine on screen (this is very important) happily sing together with reciprocation and no 'oodal', 'irritate him/her', 'sarcasm'. There are some duets where both are separated and they sing thinking of each other. I am not touching that aspect here in this playlist.

In this playlist, it is exactly a love duet, except only female sings (even the male portions). Please watch the video of iru paRavaigaL (or any video of the songs I have listed), it should be clear. The lyrics also explains the male part, but female sings his part too.

kalyaana vaibogam is a perfect duet where both are present on the screen, there is reciprocation, everything. She is also asking some questions to him when he is in front of her. Same way dhaagam edukkira mEgham is a perfect duet as female solo (except for initial back and forth scenes). Those were excellent finds. You got it! Smile Thank you!

But kuzhal oothum kaNNanukku is a female solo, where she expresses her love indirectly to him, while he is still searching who is singing, with no reciprocation. Same way ooru sanam thoongiruchi is a female solo. RaasaavE unnai vida maatEn, there is no hero on screen, again a thinking song by heroine. Thaalaattum Poongaatru naanallavO borders, as the video sequence does not really say that. He is tied, but at the background she is happy. Oru kOdiyaal is a Bhairavi song right? Sripriya sings thinking of Rajini, expecting his arrival, while Rajini is caught in a trouble chased by Police.

I thought IR(contrary to popular perception) was quite prolific in the early 90s(atleast up to 1995) and his folk/rustic melodies especially were consistently terrific. Here is only a  sample early-mid 90s rustic melodies playlist, this list is not exhaustive by any means:

1. naan yerikarai melirundhu - chinna thayee
2. naan yaaru - Chinna jameen
3. Vanna chindhu vandhu viLayaadum - kovil kaaLai
4. Potri paadadi - Devar magan
5. saami kitta - aavaram Poo
6. Adukku malli - Aaavaram Poo
7. vetti vetti veru - Manikuyil
8. aalapol - Yejamaan
9. malliga mottu -sakthivel
10. Poothu poothu kulungudhadi - kumbakarai thangaiah - such terrific melody lines and resolutions in the stanzas. Only wish somebody more expressive than Uma Ramanan had sung this
11. pacha mala - kizhakku vaasa
12. velli nilave- nandhavana theru
13. mayilaadum thoppil -chinna pasanga nanga - terrific song and overlooked a bit
14. maniye manikuyile-nadodi thendral
15. raathiriyil paadum-aranmanai kili
16. odaikuyil oru - thalaattu paadava

Some of the above songs despite being rendered by mediocre singers still captivate purely based on the strength of the composition

In fact, he was MOST prolific in his entire career in the early 90s. While he consistently did 40+ films each year in the 80s, it peaked to an all time high of 52 films in 1992 and 53 in 1993 with 43 in 1991. It dipped to 26 in 1994 and 24 in 1995 and that IMO is still prolific by any composer standards in any era. Only, a dip for this man. 1996 saw 13 films but 1997 saw 20 films, 1998 saw 19 films and 1999 saw 18 films. Still a pretty good output rate Smile Only, the late 90s for me is slightly inconsistent in my likability. Peppered with GOAT-contenders-even-in-his-career-soundtracks like Guru, some truly great stuff in Sethu and some eminently good albums in Poonthottam, some of the other soundtracks don't quite match (not GOAT levels but) the still eminently great Raaja standards IMO.

I meant prolificity not quite in the sense of total soundtracks scored/year but in the sense of how consistent he was. Quality-wise. In terms of the number of noteworthy songs that came out. For instance even though the late 90s might have seen 20 films/year from him, the number of noteworthy songs(of course IMO) was very less. Those were the dark ages for IR fans and music fans in general when Deva's hits cornered a lot of the air/TV time. His contributions in MalayalamFM were far more noteworthy during this period.

Also great songs in Rajakumaran, Veera, Poomani, Poonjolai, Poovarasan, Honest Raj, Oru Oorile Oru Rajakumari, Kattumarakaran, Veera Thalatu, Ellame En Raasathan, Priyanka (Gyabagam Illayo), Yahtramozhi, Nammoora Hanthara Poove, Annan, Poonthottam, Paattu Paada Vaa, Pattu Vathiyar.............all 90s films...

I think it was a great campaign by his distractors to keep stating that IR's 90s outputs were inferior and despite the evidence to the contrary, that notion becomes a reality....

Yeah, I remember in our family too interest in new IR songs began to go down after 96 or so.  Until then, we kept up with soundtracks like Paatu Padava or Nandavana Theru even though my parents weren't really obsessively following his albums the way we now can with the net.  They just happened to get popular enough to be played regularly on Tamil TV channels at the time.  With albums like the aforementioned, to say nothing of Chinna Thambi/Dhalapathi/Marupadiyum/Guna etc the notion that IR's quality dipped in the early-mid 90s is total bollocks but that perception seems to have been accepted as reality.

Though it won't change TN public perception, at least for historians' sake, Sureshji needs to find time to complete this thread :

Will keep reminding him on tweeter to allocate some minutes at least each week on this Smile

One of the many things that make the early-to-mid 90s songs endearing to me is the blossoming of Swarnalatha during this period under IR's baton. I wished she had gotten even more songs to sing during this period but the classics that came her way have immortalized her even if life wasn't all that kind to her. There is such an amazing presence in her voice which you cannot teach. Nilladha vennila from Aanazhagan just posted in the other thread is yet another example.
