I would like to start a thread for documenting the physical reaction (mei silirthal)that IR's music has on you.  There are sections of the Maestro's music that elevate you to a different plane on a visceral level.  This place is to share that experience with others.  I wrote something along these lines in the yahoo group sometime ago and want to start a thread to see if others have a similar experience.

Recently, when I was listening to "Ithu oru nila kaalam (from tik tik tik)" from album "Maestro's background music", I just burst into tears while driving.  The piece was so powerful that I could not help my body's physical reaction to the music.  I have had similar experiences to "Gopura vaasalilae" title score, parts of Thiruvasagam, and other works of IR.  "Mudhal murai paartha nyabagam" from Neethane en ponvasantham had such an euphoric impact as well in one of the interludes.  The interesting thing about this experience of endorphin release (?I think), is that it happens quite regularly in the initial phase of listening to a new piece of music and gradually fades away until one deliberately takes a break and then comes to the piece of music again.  I do not know why this is the case, but that is how my experience is.  Would love to hear other fans' experiences.

Good point. With IR's music, this is often the case.

Have definitely felt that with many of his songs.  Great music is meant to do that to you. For me, I feel like moving my hands vigorously, imitating some instrument or just furiously moving my fingers rhythmically.

I've mentioned this before many times.

SJ's humming in the prelude of 'isai mEdaiyil indha vELaiyil' gives me mey silirpu, almost each time without fail (unless I got distracted by some external thing)!

Shocked

Even after 1000's of listens, decades after the arrival of the song etc such phenomenon happens...and there has to be something  extraordinary in that!

Several songs for me. But unfailing goosepimples every single time is the prelude of Poonnkadhave Thaazh Thiravaai. adha thavara there are songs which are unbelievably awesome to listen first. Of course they are classics. Like Panniapurathar says, the same mei silirpu won't last forever (very good point, as Fring notes), but musically they will be worthwhile and worth listening every time. But every single mei silirpu like I said Poonkadhave's prelude, Endrendrum Anandhame's prelude (imo, the greatest prelude ever composed in popular music), the entire song of Poove Ilaya Poove (MAINLY as Malaysia enters vasanthamE... madi meedhu thEngum thEnE, without pausing for breath between vasanthamE and madi which is key and ending with the brigha in the low registers at thEnE before going all the way up; oru cascade, going down on a swing and going up in a single swift ride). Those "wheee" moments that the tune presents you with. Wah wah! Not to forget the bass progression that registers as a pin kurippu as Malaysia dictates "pinkurippu.. thambi Ramakrishna". Eargasm.
